This paper deals with the effects of design (active area, current density, membrane conductivity) and operating parameters (temperature, relative humidity) on the performance of hydrogen-fuelled proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The design parameter of a PEM fuel cell with the active area of the single cell considered in this study is 25 cm2 (5 × 5). The operating voltage and current density of the fuel cell were 0.7 V and 0.5 A/cm2 respectively. The variations of activation voltage, ohmic voltage, and concentration voltage with respect to current density are analyzed in detail. The membrane conductivity with variable relative humidity is also analyzed. The results show that the maximum activation overpotential of the fuel cell was 0.4358 V at 0.21 A/cm2 due to slow reaction kinetics. The calculated ohmic and concentrated overpotential in the fuel cell was 0.01395 V at 0.76 A/cm2 and 0.027 V at 1.46 A/cm2 respectively.
There have been great demands for higher density SRAM in all area of SRAM applications, such as mobile, network, cache, and embedded applications. Therefore, aggressive shrinkage of 6T Full CMOS SRAM had been continued as the technology advances, However, conventional 6T Full CMOS SRAM has a basic limitation in the cell size because it needs 6 transistors on a silicon substrate compared to 1 transistor in a DRAM cell. The typical cell area of 6T Full CMOS SRAM is $70{\sim}90F^{2}$, which is too large compared to $8{\sim}9F^{2}$ of DRAM cell. With 80nm design rule using 193nm ArF lithography, the maximum density is 72M bits at the most. Therefore, pseudo SRAM or 1T SRAM, whose memory cell is the same as DRAM cell, is being adopted for the solution of the high density SRAM applications more than 64M bits. However, the refresh time limits not only the maximum operation temperature but also nearly all critical electrical characteristics of the products such as stand_by current and random access time. In order to overcome both the size penalty of the conventional 6T Full CMOS SRAM cell and the poor characteristics of the TFT load cell, we have developed $S^{3}$ cell. The Load pMOS and the Pass nMOS on ILD have nearly single crystal silicon channel according to the TEM and electron diffraction pattern analysis. In this study, we present $S^{3}$ SRAM cell technology with 100nm design rule in further detail, including the process integration and the basic characteristics of stacked single crystal silicon TFT.

This paper presents a method for determining the optimum active-area width (OAW) of solar cells in a module architecture. The current density-voltage curve of a reference cell with a narrow active-area width is used to reproduce the current density profile in the test cell whose active area width is to be optimized. We obtained self-consistent current density and electric potential profiles from iterative calculations of both properties, considering the distributed resistance of the contact layers. Further, we determined the OAW that yields the maximum efficiency by calculating efficiency as a function of the active-area width. The proposed method can be applied to the design of the active area of a dye-sensitized solar cell in Z-type series connection modules for indoor and building-integrated photovoltaic systems. Our calculations predicted that OAW increases as the sheet resistances of the contact layers and the intensity of light decrease.
Nitrogen availability and cell density each affects growth and cellular astaxanthin content of Haematococcus pluvialis, but possible combined effects of these two factors on the content and productivity of astaxanthin, especially under outdoor culture conditions, is less understood. In this study, the effects of the initial biomass densities IBDs of 0.1, 0.5, 0.8, 1.5, 2.7, 3.5, and 5.0 g $L^{-1}$ DW and initial nitrogen concentrations of 0, 4.4, 8.8, and 17.6 mM nitrate on growth and cellular astaxanthin content of H. pluvialis Flotow K-0084 were investigated in outdoor glass column photobioreactors in a batch culture mode. A low IBD of 0.1 g $L^{-1}$ DW led to photo-bleaching of the culture within 1-2 days. When the IBD was 0.5 g $L^{-1}$ and above, the rate at which the increase in biomass density and the astaxanthin content on a per cell basis was higher at lower IBD. When the IBD was optimal (i.e., 0.8 g $L^{-1}$), the maximum astaxanthin content of 3.8% of DW was obtained in the absence of nitrogen, whereas the maximum astaxanthin productivity of 16.0 mg $L^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ was obtained in the same IBD culture containing 4.4 mM nitrogen. The strategies for achieving maximum Haematococcus biomass productivity and for maximum cellular astaxanthin content are discussed.

As a biofuel source, direct photosynthetic/metabolic biofuel cells (DPBFC) use cyanobacteria whose photosynthesis and metabolization reactions can convert light energy to electricity, In our previous work, we fabricated a prototype micro-DPBFC that could generate a peak current density of $36{\mu}A/cm^{2}$ and a maximum power density of $270nW/cm^{2}$. In this study, we improve on the previous results by using carbon micro electromechanical systems (C-MEMS), formed from the pyrolysis of patterned photoresist, to fabricate carbon electrodes of an arbitrary shape and controlled porosity to increase the surface area. With these new C-MEMS electrodes, the maximum power density of the micro-DPBFC was $516nW/cm^{2}$, a performance twice as good as the results of our previous work.
We present a MEMS-based portable Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (micro-DFMC), featured by a platinum sputtered microcolumn electrode and a built-in fuel chamber containing a limited amount of methanol fuel. Also presented is a micro-DMFC stack structure having a common electrolyte sandwiched by the microcolumn electrodes. The single cells with ME16 and PE16 electrodes show the maximum power densities of $31.04{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$ and $9.75{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$, respectively; thus indicating the microcolumn electrode (ME16) generates the power density (3.2 times) higher than the planar electrode (PE16). The single cell tests of ME16 and ME4 electrodes (Fig.8) show the maximum power of $31.04{\pm}0.29{\mu}W/cm^2$, and $25.23{\pm}2.7{\mu}W/cm^2$, respectively; thus demonstrating the increased window frame reduces the normalized standard power deviation (standard deviation over the average power). The normalized deviation of 0.11 in ME4 cell has been reduced to 0.01 in ME16 cell due to the increased window frames. The maximum power density of 4-cell stack is 15.7 times higher than that of the single cell. 4-cell stack produces the power capacity of 20.3mWh/g during 980min operation at the voltage of 450mV with the load resistance of $800{\Omega}$.
Newly structured metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell was fabricated and characterized by impedance analysis and galvanodynamic experiment. Using a cermet adhesive, thin ceramic layer composed of anode(Ni/YSZ) and electrolyte(YSZ) was joined with STS430 metal support of which flow channel was fabricated. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_3$ perovskite oxide was used as cathode material. Single cell performance was increased and saturated at operating time to 300hours at 800$^{\circ}C$ because of cathode sintering effect. The sintering effect was reinvestigated by half cell test and exchange current density was measured as 0.005A/$cm^2$. Maximum power density of the cell was 0.09W/$cm^2$ at 800$^{\circ}C$. Numerical analysis was carried out to classify main factors influencing the single cell performances. Compared to experimental IV curve, simulated curve based on experimental parameters such as exchange current density was in good agreement.
