This study carried out the survey of the actual condition targeting 303 patients with execution of treatment after medical examination among patients who visited from January 2, 2008 to December 31, 2008 at dental hospital where is located in K region, and analyzed by using a program of SPSS13.0. The ratio of treatment in posterior was high with 76.9% in central incisor, 62.3% in the 1st bicuspids, and 45.3% in the first permanent molars as for health in the right teeth of maxillary, and with 77.9% in central incisor, 64.4% in the 1st bicuspids, and 47.6% in the first permanent molars as for the left teeth. In the lower jaw, the ratio of treatment in posterior was high with 92.1% in central incisor, 73.9% in the 1st bicuspids, and 42.6% in the first permanent molars as for health in the right teeth, and with 92.1% in central incisor, 75.9% in the 1st bicuspids, and 43.2% in the first permanent molars as for the left teeth. The upper left cuspid was treated in older patients by age(${\chi}^2=32.33$, p=0.000), in the more patients with high blood pressure(${\chi}^2=12.60$, p=0.000), and in case of systemic disease. The significant difference was shown(${\chi}^2=6.37$, p=0.012). The older patients led to being treated cuspid among right teeth in the lower jaw. The significant difference was shown according in the more patients with high blood pressure(${\chi}^2=8.26$, p=0.004). The left cuspid in the lower jaw was treated in the older patients by age the statistically significant difference was shown(${\chi}^2=12.10$, p=0.007).
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the oral health status and health care of elderly people on their self-rated health(SRH). The subjects on this study were 479 senior citizens who were at the age of 65 and up and resided in the city of Busan. They got a dental checkup, and a survey was conducted by having an one-on-one interview. After the collected data were analyzed, the following findings were given: The senior citizens were diagnosed with a mean of 1.43 systemic diseases, and hypertension(51.8%) was the most prevalent disease among them, followed by diabetes(25.1%), arthritis(41.8%), oral diseases(75.6%), stroke(9.0%) and heart diseases(15.9%). Their self-rated health was better when they were male, when they were aged between 65 and 69, when there was someone with whom they lived, when they were better educated and when they owned their own houses. But their self-rated health was poorer when they felt more oral symptoms, when they had more missing teeth and when they needed both of maxillary and mandibular dentures. Their self-rated health was more positively affected when they were better educated($\beta$=0.894), when they owned their own houses($\beta$=4.220), when they got a dental checkup on a regular basis($\beta$=2.997) and when the rate of their functional tooth was larger($\beta$=0.081). And that was more negatively influenced when they had a denture($\beta$=-1.110), when they had more oral symptoms($\beta$=-1.590) and when they had more systemic diseases($\beta$=3.363). There is a close relationship between the oral health and self-rated health of elderly people. Therefore how to promote their oral health should carefully be considered.
The purpose of this study was to verify the usefulness of MTT analysis as a tool of measurement of the periodontal ligament cell viability from the extracted rat molar. A total of 80 Sprague-Dawley white female rat of 4 week-old with a body weight of 100 grams were used. The maxillary left and right, first and second molars were extracted under Ketamine anesthesia. Twenty-four teeth of each group (divided as five groups depending upon the time-lapse after extraction such as Immediate, 10, 20, 40 and 60 minutes) were immersed in $200{\mu}l$ of MTT solution (0.5 mg/ml) and processed for optical density measurements. Another 10 teeth of each group were treated as same as above and sectioned at $10{\mu}m$ for microscopic examination. All measurements values were divided by the value of hematoxylin-eosin staining which represented the volume of each corresponding samples. Immediate and 10 minute groups showed highest MTT values followed by 20, 40, and 60 minutes consecutively. Statistical significance (p<0.05) existed between all groups except in immediate versus 10 minute groups and 40 versus 60 minutes. Histological findings also showed similar findings with MTT results in crystal shape and crystal numbers between the experimental groups. These data indicate that in vivo MTT analysis nay be of value for evaluation of the periodontal ligament cell viability without time- consuming cell culturing processes.
Nitric oxide(NO) has been reported to be one of the mediators relating to bone remodelling. Nitric oxide is synthesized from L-arguinine by nitric oxide synthetase(NOS), which is largely divided Into two groups. One group which is composed of $NOS_1\;and\;NOS_3$, is dependent of calcium or calmodulin. The other consisted of $NOS_2$, which is independent of calcium or calmodulin. NOS is thought to be a possible intermediate affecting in the course of tooth movement. This study was designed to evaluate the expression of nitrous oxide synthetase(NOS) in periodontal tissue during the experimental movement of rat incisors, by LSAB(labelled streptavidine biotin) immunohistochemical staining for $NOS_2\;and\;NOS_3$. Twenty seven Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a control group(3 rats), and 6 experimental groups(24 rats), to which 75g of force was applied, with helical springs across the maxillary incisors. Rats of experimental groups were sacrificed at 12 hours, 1, 4, 7, 14 and 28 days after force application, respectively. After that, the tissues of the control group and experimental groups were studied immunohistochemically. The results were as follows: 1. In control group, the expression of $NOS_3$ was rare in gingiva, dentin, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, and was mild in the capillaries of pulp and intermaxillary suture. And the expression of $NOS_2$ showed similar pattern to that of $NOS_3$. 2. There were no differences in the expression of $NOS_2\;or\;NOS_3$ in dentin, gingiva, cementum, cementoblast and odontoblast, between control and experimental groups, regardless of the duration of the force application. 3. The expression of $NOS_3$ began to increase at 4 days and showed to the highest degree at 7 days after force application, in the apical region of pressure side of periodontal ligament in experimental groups. 4. The expression of $NOS_3$ in alveolar bone was rare until 7 days, after which it increased to mild degree at 14 days through 28 days in experimental group. But there was no difference between pressure and tension side of periodontal ligament. 5. The expression of $NOS_2$ in periodontal ligament was mild from 7 days after force application, regardless of the side of periodontium, which was generally more evident than that of $NOS_3$. 6. The expression of $NOS_2$ in alveolar bone increased to mild degree at 14 days after force application, and it was evident in osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. And the expression of $NOS_2$ was little more stronger in the tension side than that of pressure side of alveolar bone.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the material for fixed type retainer, allowing physiologic tooth movement. and proper remodeling or periodontal tissue during retention period. The Present study was Performed to observe the histologic changes of periodontal tissue after application of different types of fixed type retainer after orthodontic tooth movement in young adult dogs. For this study, 4 young adult dogs were used as a experimental animal and experimental group was divided into three groups : experimental group 1 contained right side maxillayy third incisors and canines, experimental group 2 contained contralateral teeth of same animals, and control group contained mandibular premolars. And each dogs were applied the 4 different types of fixed type retainer to experimental group 1. The experimental teeth were ligated on the Sentalloy closed coil $spring^{\circledR}$(Tomy Co., Japan) from maxillary third incisors and canines and applied orthodontic force at initial 200gm-forced during 1 week. All the experimental animals were sacrificed on the 3rd week after the orthodontic teeth movement and then the specimens were taken, fixed in formalin, embeded in parafin, sectioned $6-8{\mu}m$ in thickness and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining, and Masson's trichrome staining method. Examined under the light microscopy The following results were observed. 1. There were observed that decreased infiltration of giant tells in pressure side and increased the new bone forming in tension side on the specimen of 6-stranded 0.0195' $Respond^{\circledR}$(G&H Co., U.S.A.) group. Periodontal ligament fibers were much compressed or elongated in 3-stranded 0.018', 0.020' $Dentaflex^{\circledR}$(Dentarum Co., Germany), and Superbond $C&B^{\circledR}$(Sun Medical Co., Japan) groups. 2. In experimental group 1, necrotic bone inside the alveolar bone of pressure side, forming of the sharpey's fiber in osteoid tissue, and remodeling of the periodontal ligament were observed in all animals. 3. In experimental group 2, it was observed that the amount of bone resorption was equal or decreased in pressure side, and increased new bone forming and significantly decreased infiltration of giant cell than the experimental group 1. By this results, it considered that 6-stranded $Respond^{\circledR}$(G&H Co., U.S.A.) wire was the most useful material allowing early periodontal tissue remodeling.

Information on the limits of treatment could allow for more rational treatment Planning and better results after treatment. From this point of view, this article has attempted to discuss the limits of orthodontic tooth movement. A relatively wider range of tooth movement is expected after Class III surgical-orthodontics than after conventional orthodontic treatment in general. The purposes of this Paper were: first, to evaluate the reliability of teeth position measuring gauge; and second, to elucidate the limits of orthodontic tooth movement. Dental casts of fifty-fine subjects were analyzed by using Set-up model checker (InVisitec Co., Korea) before and aster the Class III surgical-orthodontic treatment. The changes of maxillary and mandibular dental arch widths were also measured from the canines to the second molars. To test the inter-examiner reliability, randomly selected casts were measured by another examiner. Descriptive statistics and paired t tests were used to explain the tooth movement during treatment. The results showed a relatively good reliability of measuring instruments and a very diverse range of tooth movement. Collective changes by the orthodontic tooth movement evaluated in Class III surgical-orthodontics allowed for a suggestive interpretation of specific treatment patterns. Arch width changes during the inter-arch coordination were mainly the result of tipping in both buccal segments. Based on the results of this study, the possibility of a change in dentition as a result of orthodontic treatment should be understood in order to launch a well-organized plan of treatment.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of estrogen on the periodontium and alveolar bone tissue response during experimental tooth movement in ovariectomized rats. Eighty female rats, 250gm in body weight, were classified into four groups ; sham operated group(NN), ovariectomized group(ON), ovariectomized & estrogen injected group(OE), sham operated & estrogen injected group(NE). flats were ovariectomized before 3 weeks to begin the experiment, which resulted in estrogen-deficient osteoporosis. In OE group & NE group, estrogen was injected $50{\mu}g/kg\;B.W.$ every other days. The left maxillary 1st molar was moved mesially with 60g force. Each foot rats were sacrificed after 1, 3, 7, 15 days from application of orthodontic appliance and alter additional 7 days from removal of orthodontic appliance. Histological findings on mesial roots of upper 1st molar in pressure and tension side are observed. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. In pressure side of alveolar bone, the number of osteoclasts and Howship's lacuna of ON group was significantly more than that of NN group from 1 day to 15 days(P<0.05). Especially the number of Howship's lacuna of ON group was significantly more than that of OE group during all experimental period(P<0.05). 2. In tension side of alveolar tune, the number of osteoclasts of ON group was significantly increased from 1 day to 3 days and decreased after 7 days. But the number of osteoclast of ON group was significantly mote than that of NN group during all experimental period(P<0.05). Also the number of Howship's lacuna of all groups was abruptly increased at 1 day, but slowly decreased till experimental 15 days. And the number of Howship's lacuna of of group was significantly more than that of NN group from 0 hr to 7 days(P<0.05). 3. The speed of tooth movement of OE group & NE group was similar to that of NN group(P>0.05). The amount of tooth movement of ON group between 7 days and 15 days was significantly greater than those of other groups(P<0.05). 4. The degree of relapse of ON group after 7 days from removal of orthodontic appliance was similar to those of other groups(P>0.05).
GRP was known as the modulator of Pain transmission in central nervous system and local effector to peripheral tissue causing vasodilation, increased blood flow, modulation of immune sysem, stimulation of endothelial cell proliferation, and stimulation of bone formation. Numerous study, therefore, were done to elucidate involvement of CGRP to tooth movement. To investgate the response of CGRP immunoreactive nerve cells according to cell size in trigeminal ganglion during tooth movement, immunohistochemical study was performed using rat. Experimental rats(9 weeks old, 210 gm) were divided as six groups(normal(n=6), 3 hour group(n=5), 12 hour group(n=4), 1 day group(n=5), 3 day group(n=5), 7 day group(n=5)), and were applied orthodontic force (approximately 30 gm) to upper right maxillary molar. After frozen sections of trigeminal ganglions were immunostained using rabbit antisera, the changes of CGRP immunoreactive cells in regard to cell size distribution(small cell(upto $20{\mu}m$), medium cell($20-35{\mu}m$), large cell(above $35{\mu}m$)) were observed. The results were as follows 1. The percentage of CGRP immunoreactive cells to all nerve cells in trigeminal ganglion was 33.0% in normal control group, was decreased to 24.5% in 1 day group, and was increased to 41.8% in 7 day group. 2. The percentage of small, medium, and large cells expressing CGRP immunoreactivity in normal trigeminal ganglion to all CGRP immunoreactive cells were 51.3%, 44.0%, 4.7%, respectively. 3. The percentage of small cells with CGRP immunoreactivity to all CGRP immunopositive cells was increased in 3 hour and 12 hour groups. 4. The percentage of medium cells with CGRP immunoreactivity was increaed in 3 day and 7 day groups. 5. The percentage of large cells with CGRP immunoreactivity was increaed in 7 day group. Conclusively, the small cells with CGRP immunoreactivity in trigeminal ganglion respond to orthodontic force during initial phase of tooth movement, and later the medium and large cells with CGRP immunoreactivity respond
Objective: The result of finite element analysis depends on material properties, structural expression, density of element, and boundar or loading conditions. To represent proper elastic behavior, a finite element model was made using Hounsfield unit (HU) values in CT images. Methods: A 13 year 6 month old male was used as the subject. A 3 dimensional visualizing program, Mimics, was used to build a 3D object from the DICOM file which was acquired from the CT images. Model 1 was established by giving 24 material properties according to HU. Model 2 was constructed by the conventional method which provides 2 material properties. Protraction force of 500g was applied at a 45 degree downward angle from Frankfort horizontal (FH) plane. Results: Model 1 showed a more flexible response on the first premolar region which had more forward and downward movement of the maxillary anterior segment. Maxilla was bent on the sagittal plane and frontal plane. Model 2 revealed less movement in all directions. It moved downward on the anterior part and upward on the posterior part, which is clockwise rotation of the maxilla. Conclusion: These results signify that different outcomes of finite element analysis can occur according to the given material properties and it is recommended to use HU values for more accurate results.
