The maturity and spawning of the yellow goosefish Lophius litulon were studied using samples collected monthly from January to December 2018 from the coastal waters of Korea. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), total length (TL) at 50%, 75%, and 97.5% group maturity, egg diameter and fecundity. The spawning period was from January to June. The size of eggs spawned was between 0.30 to 1.28 mm. Fecundity varied between 328,314 to 1,624,783 eggs. The percentage of sexually mature females estimated from a logistic function was over 50% at 48.67 cm TL, 75% at 56.76 cm TL and 97.5% at 74.89 cm TL.
This study was conducted to investigate the early life history by observing the egg development of Ladislavia taczanowskii in endangered fish and to use it as basic data for species conservation research. The broodstork used in the study was secured from the area of the Hongcheon River in Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon State. The broodstork, who was being raised in the laboratory, selected mature individuals in May 2021 and induced them to spawn by hormone injection. The size of the maturation egg was 1.50~1.79 (average 1.59±0.08, n=30) mm due to the circular invasive egg. The incubation time took 168 hours at 16.5℃ and 109 hours and 30 minutes at 25.5℃. Newly hatched larvae, the consonants had a total length of 5.55~6.31 mm (6.30±6.93, n=30) mm, and the mouth and anus did not open and had egg yolk. 5 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae had a total length of 9.91~10.8 (10.1±0.27, n=30) mm, and the mouth and anus opened, and feeding activities began. 8 days after hatching, the flexion larvae had a total length of 10.3~11.4 (10.8±0.38, n=30) mm, and the end of the vertebrae at the tail fin tip began to bend upward. 10 day after hatching, the postflexion larvae had a total length of 11.8~13.1 (12.3±0.43, n=30) mm, and the end of the vertebrae at the tail tip was completely bent at 45°. 18 days after hatching, the total length of the juveniles was 18.9~23.4 (20.4±1.69, n=30) mm, and the number of fins in each part was fin rays with 10 dorsal fins, 9 anal fins, 22 caudal fins, and 7 ventral fins. As a result of the study, the postflexion larvae showed differences in morphology from other Gobioninae fishes in the upper part of the tail's hypural, the shape of spots on the dorsal vertebrae, the vertical stripes developed on the head, and the irregularly deposited melanophore throughout the body.

Plant genomes include heterochromatic loci that consist of repetitive sequences and transposable elements. LTR retrotransposon is the major class of transposons in advanced plants in terms of proportion in plant genome. The elements contribute not only to genome size but also to genome stability and gene expression. A number of cases have been reported transposon insertions near genic regions affect crop traits such as fruit pigments, stress tolerance, and yields. Functional LTR retrotransposons produce extrachromosomal DNA from genomic RNA by reverse transcription that takes place within virus-like-particles (VLPs). DECREASED DNA METHYLATION 1 (DDM1) plays important roles in maintaining DNA methylation of heterochromatin affecting all sequence contexts, CG, CHG, and CHH. Previous studies showed that ddm1 mutant exhibits massive transcription of retrotransposons in Arabidopsis, but only few of them were able to create new insertions into the genome. RNA-dependent RNA POLYMERASE 6 (RDR6) is known to function in restricting accumulation of transposon RNA by processing the transcripts into 21-22 nt epigenetically activated small interfering RNA (easiRNA). We purified VLPs and sequence cDNA to identify functional LTR retrotransposons in Arabidopsis ddm1 and ddm1rdr6 plants. Over 20 LTR copia and gypsy families were detected in ddm1 and ddm1rdr6 sequencing libraries and most of them were not reported for mobility. In ddm1rdr6, short fragments of ATHILA gypsy elements were detected. It suggests easiRNAs might regulate reverse transcription steps. The highest enriched element among transposon loci was previously characterized EVADE element. It has been reported that active EVADE element is more efficiently silenced through female germline than male germline. By genetic analyses, we found ddm1 and rdr6 mutation affect maternal silencing of active EVADE elements. DDM1-GFP protein accumulated in megaspore mother cell but was not found in mature egg cell. The fusion protein was also found in early embryo and maternal DDM1-GFP allele was more dominantly expressed in the embryo. We observed localization of DDM1-GFP in Arabidopsis and DDM1-YFP in maize and found the proteins accumulated in dividing zone of root tips. Currently we are looking at cell cycle dependency of DDM1 expression using maize system. Among 10 AGO proteins in Arabidopsis, AGO9 is specifically expressed in egg cell and shoot meristematic cells. In addition, mutation of AGO9 and RDR6 caused failure in maternal silencing, implying 21-22 nt easiRNA pathway is important for retrotransposon silencing in female gametophyte or/and early embryo. On the other hand, canonical 24 nt sRNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathways did not contribute to maternal silencing as confirmed by this study. Heat-activated LTR retrotransposon, ONSEN, was not silenced by DDM1 but the silencing mechanisms require RdDM pathways in somatic cells. We will propose distinct mechanisms of LTR retrotransposons in germline and somatic stages.

This study aimed to examine the early life history of Trident goby (Tridentiger brevispinis) by observing their egg development and juvenile fish morphology. The average size of mature eggs was 1.13~1.41 (1.30±0.07) mm (n=30), and 0.70~0.86 (0.79±0.04) mm (n=30) in long diameter and short diameter, respectively. The incubation period at 24±1℃ ranged from 167~228 h. The newly hatched larvae measured 2.31~2.78 (2.51±0.18) mm (n=30) in total length (TL), and their mouth and anus were not yet open. At 3 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae reached 2.84~3.10 (2.98±0.10) mm in TL, where in their yolk absorption was complete and their mouths began to open. At 19 days after hatching, the larvae reached the flexion stage, measuring 4.02~4.62 (4.36±0.19) mm in TL. The tip of their notochord was bent upward. At 30 days post-hatching, the larvae reached the postflexion stage, measuring between 5.04~6.36 (5.76±0.51) mm in TL, with the tip of the caudal fin bent at 45°. After 54 days, the larvae had reached the juvenile stage, measuring between 7.43~9.84 (8.48±0.90) mm in TL, and were differentiated by their constant number of fins (6 first dorsal, 12 second dorsal, 11 anal, and 10 ventral fins). This study found that T. brevispinis had larger fertilized eggs and a greater number of myotomes in hatching larva than similar species. Additionally, the distribution of melanophores in T. brevispinis was distinct from that in other similar species, making it easy to distinguish them morphologically.

In this study, the characteristics of the early life history were investigated for the Hypomesus nipponensis in the west coast Daeho Bay. Egg's were adhesive eggs that had the property of sinking in water in a circular shape. The size of mature eggs was 0.52~0.66 (average of 0.59±0.03, n=30) mm. The hatching time took 140 hours at a water temperature of 22~23℃. Immediately after hatching, the yolk sac larvae was 4.78~5.60 (average of 5.25±0.26, n=30) mm in total length, and the mouth and anus were not completely opened. On the 7 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae was 5.91~6.64 (6.32±0.21) mm in total length, and the mouth and anus were opened, and feeding activities were started. On the 25 days after hatching, the flexion larvae was 9.70~12.3 (10.2±0.63) mm in total length, and the end of the spine at the tail end began to bend upward. On the 42 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae was 14.1~18.8 (16.9±1.44) mm in total length, and the end of the spine at the tail was completely bent at 45°. On the 56 days after hatching, it reached the integer with 10 dorsal fins, 16 anal fins, 7 ventral fins, and 19 caudal fins. According to the study, there were spot-shaped melanophore vesicles under the pectoral fins during the incubation period, the different positions of the egg yolk compared to the battlefield, the deposition of melanophore vesicles on the back and under the body of the caudal part during the postflexion larvae period, and the absence of melanophore vesicles on the torso between the head and the starting point of the dorsal fin. It was distinguished from related species in that melanophore vesicles were deposited in one row from the back of the body to the caudal part during the juvenile period.
The reproductive ecology of the goldeye rockfish (Sebastes thompsoni) was examined using 421 specimens collected monthly from January to December 2005 in the coastal waters of Busan, Korea. Specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 13.8 to 31.8 cm. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in March and decreased until June. In males the GSI was the highest in February after that the values declined. The spawning season lasted from January to June, and the ratio of female to male did not differ significantly ($x^2$-test, p>0.05). The length at first spawning was 16.8cm SL, and the size at 50% maturity was estimated at 20.11 cm SL. All females more than 25 cm SL were sexually mature and the egg diameters were from 0.60 to 1.75 mm. Fecundity (F) ranged from 23,881 to 44,509 eggs, with a mean of 30,937 eggs. The relationship between fecundity and standard length was estimated as F=9.3762 $SL^{1.1662}$ ($R^2$=0.81). The relationship between fecundity and body weight (BW) was estimated as F=184.37 Ln (BW) - 665.09 ($R^2$=0.87).

The ovary of the spotted flounder Verasper variegatus is a conical bag in shape and is bilateral structure develops lengthily from the posterior of the abdomen to the end of the anal fin. The testis also is bilateral in structure, usually located in small size in the abdomen. In females, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed very low from March to July, and then began to increase from August, thereafter reached the maximum in January through out the year. In males, the GSI reached the maximum (1.7) in January through out the year, as seen in females. Compared with the male GSI in other fishes, the maximum GSI of this species were very lower than those of other fishes. According to the distributions of egg diameter in the spawning season, it is assumed that the spotted flounder spawn four times or more in the spawning season. The total length of female and male reached 50% first sexual maturity were 42.0~44.0 and 28.0~30.0cm, respectively and total length of female and male reached 100% maturity were 44.0 and 32.0cm, respectively. The reproductive cycle could be classified into four successive developmental stages: growing stage (August~October), mature stage (November~December), ripe and spent stage (December~February), degenerative and resting stage (March~July).
The reproductive ecology of the cardinalfish Apogon lineatus was examined using 4,300 specimens collected monthly from January to December 2006 in the coastal waters of Gori, Korea. Specimens ranged in standard length (SL) from 2.1 to 8.6 cm. They were distributed more in surface areas during summer and autumn and more on bottom areas during spring and winter. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was highest in September and decreased until December, with the spawning season lasting from August to October. The monthly ratio of female to male did not significantly differ (${\chi}^2$-test, p>0.05). The size of 50% maturity was estimated at 5.43 cm SL and all females more than 7.0 cm SL were sexually mature. A. lineatus is a multiple spawner, spawning on more than one occasion in a single spawning season. The maximum egg diameter was 0.65 mm. Fecundity (F) ranged from 8,555 to 20,084 eggs, with a mean of 15,038 eggs. The relationship between fecundity and standard length was estimated as F=$334,851\;SL^{1.9876}$ ($R^2$=0.53). The relationship between fecundity and body weight(BW) was estimated as F=7,167.6 Ln (BW)-2,198.1 ($R^2$=0.33).

The early life history of Silurus microdorsalis living in Jahocheon Stream was studied by observing egg and morphological development. Live fish were captured in June 2018, then reared in a circulating filtration system under a 14L : 10D photoperiod with a water temperature of 18℃. To artificially induce spawning, females were injected with 0.5 mL of Ovaprim (Syndel, Nanaimo, BC, Canada) per kg of body weight, and males were injected with 10,000 IU/kg body weight of human chorionic gonadotropin. Approximately 15 h later, eggs were artificially inseminated by the dry method. Mature eggs were light pale yellow, which separated them from immature eggs. Fertilized eggs were 2.16±0.06 mm (n=8) in diameter and fully hatched at 181 h after fertilization. The fertilization rate was 63.1±2.2%, and 10.0±3.7% of the embryos were malformed at 18℃. The rates of development were 181 h at 18℃, 109 h at 21℃, and 76 h at 24℃. The larval size immediately after hatching was 4.64±0.22 mm (n=8), and the larvae displayed negative phototaxis at 1 day after hatching. The total larval length on 7 days after hatching was 12.47±0.53 mm, with 25~30 basal anal fin rays and 14~16 basal caudal fin rays observed. The total larval length was 14.13±0.51 mm on 9 days after hatching, and approximately 90% of the black endoplasmic reticulum was deposited on the head and body. The dorsal fin had formed, and a single basal body was observed. On 15 days after hatching, the total larval length was 16.69±0.31 mm; the number of basal caudal fin rays (18 poles) was an integer because 2 dorsal fin basal rays and 60~63 anal fin basal rays were observed. The total larval length was 28.96±1.10 mm on 50 days after hatching; the numbers of caudal fins (n=18), dorsal fins (n=3), pectoral fins (n=11), and anal fin basal rays (n=67~73) were integers.
