System condensation technique improves the efficiency of the inverse perturbation method of damage detection developed in the previous work. The technique is applied to transform the unmeasured DOFs to the measured DOFs. This approach makes it possible to eliminate the unmeasured DOFs, which accelerates the computational efficiency. The numerical instability problems due to the system condensation technique are also resolved by updating the transformation matrix for each step, and also by adopting the accelerated improved reduced system(AIRS) condensation method.

Recently, many high-rise apartment buildings using the box system, composed of only reinforced concrete walls and slabs, have been constructed. In residential buildings such as apartments, vibrations occur from various sources and these vibrations transfer to neighboring residential units through walls and slabs. It is necessary to use a refined finite element model for an accurate vibration analysis of shear wall building structures. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure were subdivided into a finer mesh. Therefore, an efficient analytical method, which has only translational DOFs perpendicular to walls or slabs by the matrix condensation technique, is proposed in this study to obtain accurate results in significantly reduced computational time. If all of the DOFs except those perpendicular to walls or slabs in the shear wall structure eliminated using the matrix condensation technique at a time, the computational time for the matrix condensation would be significant. Thus, the modeling technique using super elements and substructuring technique is proposed to reduce the computational time for the matrix condensation. Dynamic analysis of 3-story and 5-story shear wall example structures were performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method can provide the results with outstanding accuracy requiring significantly reduced computational time and memory.

In this paper, an efficient dynamic analysis method of a building structure with viscoelastic dampers is proposed. Viscoelastic dampers are used for the purpose of controlling vibration of buildings. The matrix condensation technlque based on the rigid diaphragm assumption is not readily applicable for building structures with viscoelastic dampers. An improved procedure for damping matrix condensation is employed in the proposed method to increase the efficiency of analysis. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of an example structure.

In this study, an analysis technique using static condensation is proposed for an efficient local nonlinear static analysis. The static condensation method is a model reduction method based on the degrees of freedom, and the analysis model is divided into a target part and a condensed part to be omitted. In this study, the nonlinear and linear parts were designated to the target and the omitted parts, respectively, and both the stiffness matrix and load vector corresponding to the linear part were condensed into the nonlinear part. After model condensation, the reduced model comprising the stiffness matrix and the load vector for the nonlinear part is constructed, and only this reduced model was updated through the Newton-Raphson iteration for an efficient nonlinear analysis. Finally, the efficiency and reliability of the proposed analysis technique were presented by applying it to various numerical examples.
This study concerns with morphing structures, e.g. as applied in the aerospace industry. A morphing aerofoil structure capable of variable geometry was developed, which was shown to be able to cater for the different aerodynamic requirements at different stages of flight. In this work, the useful and relatively simple method has been applied, which provides a direct method for calculating required morphing shape displacements via finding the most effective bar through calculating bar sensitivity to displacement and calculating set of length actuations for bar assembly to control/adjust shape imperfection of prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements ("macro-elements", e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation. The technique has been verified by experiments on the physical model of an aerofoil shaped morphing pantographic structure. Overall, experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, the technique of multi-iteration adjustment was presented that effective in eliminating errors that occur in the practical adjustment process itself. It has been demonstrated by the experiments on the physical model of pantographic morphing structure. Finally, the study discusses identification of the most effective bars with the objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation.

The mega frame system is becoming popular for the design and construction of skyscrapers because this system exhibits structural efficiency by allowing high rigidity of the structure while minimizing the amount of structural materials to be used. Since the mega frame system is usually adopted for super high-rise buildings, the comfort of occupants may be main concerns in the practical application of this system. For the enhancement of the serviceability of mega frame structures, a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) is developed in this study. To this end, a Magnetorheological (MR) damper is employed replacing passive damper as a semi-active damper to improve the control effect of a conventional TMD. Since a conventional finite element model of mega frame structures has significant numbers of DOFs, numerical simulation for investigation of control performances of a STMD is impossible by using the full-order model. Therefore, a reduced-order system using minimal DOFs, which can accurately represent the dynamic behavior of a mega frame structure, is proposed in this study through the matrix condensation technique To improve the efficiency of the matrix condensation technique, multi-level matrix condensation technique is proposed using the structural characteristics of mega frame structures. The efficiency and accuracy of the reduced-order control proposed in this study and the control performance of a STMD were verified using example structures.

Since the mega frame structure has significant numbers of elements and nodes, it takes tremendous times and computer memories to analyze and design the structures. Therefore, the exclusive structural analysis program for mega frame system is developed to reduce the efforts and time required for the analysis and design of mega frame structure. To this end, an efficient modelling technique using the characteristics of mega frame structures and an efficient analytical model, which uses a few DOFs selected by the user using the matrix condensation method. are developed in tins study. Static and dynamic analyses are conducted using an example structure.

The box system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. And the framed structure with shear wall core that can effectively resist horizontal forces is frequently adopted for the structural system for high-rise building structures. In these structures, a shear wall may have one or more openings for functional reasons. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements for accurate analysis of the shear wall with openings. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analysis method that can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study. The analysis method uses super element, substructure, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Three-dimensional analyses of the box system and the framed structure with shear wall core having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

Very stiff floor system in a residential-commercial building causes some problems in the numerical analysis procedure due to significant difference in stiffness with adjacent elements. Static analysis of structure with a stiff transfer-floor can be performed approximately in two steps for upper and lower parts for the structure. However, it is impossible to perform dynamic analysis in two steps with separate models. An efficient method for dynamic analysis of a structure with a right floor system is proposd in this study. The matrix condensation technique is employed to reduce the degree of freedom for upper and lower parts of the structure and a beam elements with rigid bodies at both ends are introduce to model the rigid floor system. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of several example structures.

Steel structures with added viscoelastic dampers are analysed to investigat their behavior under earthquake excitation. The direct integration method, which produces exact solution for the non-proportional or non-classical damping system, is used throughout the analysis. The results from modal strain energy method are also provided for comparison. Then a new analytical a, pp.oach, based on the rigid floor diaphragm assumption and matrix condensation technique, is introduced, and the results are compared with those obtained from direct integration method and modal strain energy method. The well known phenomenon, that the effectiveness of the viscoelastic dampers depends greatly on the location of the dampers, is once again confirmed in the analysis. It is also found that the modal strain energy method generaly underestimates the responses obtained from the direct integration method, especially when the dampers are placed in only a part of the building. The proposed method turns out to be very efficient with considerable saving in computation this and reasonably accurate considering the reduced degrees of freedom.
