  • A new emotion-based image retrieval method is proposed in this paper. The research was motivated by Soen's evaluation of human emotion on color patterns. Thirteen pairs of adjective words expressing emotion pairs such as like-dislike, beautiful-ugly, natural-unnatural, dynamic-static, warm-cold, gay-sober, cheerful-dismal, unstablestable, light-dark, strong-weak, gaudy-plain, hard-soft, heavy-light are modeled by 19-dimensional color array and $4{\times}3$ gray matrix in off-line. Once the query is presented in text format, emotion model-based query formulation produces the associated color array and gray matrix. Then, images related to the query are retrieved from the database based on the multiplication of color array and gray matrix, each of which is extracted from query and database image. Experiments over 450 images showed an average retrieval rate of 0.61 for the use of color array alone and an average retrieval rate of 0.47 for the use of gray matrix alone.

  • For an n ${\times}$ n real matrix X, let ${\Phi}$(X) = X o (X$\^$-1/)$\^$T/, where o stands for the Hadamard (entrywise) product. Suppose A, B, G and D are n ${\times}$ n real nonsingular matrices, and among them there are at least one solutions to the equation (equation omitted). An equivalent condition which enable (equation omitted) become a real solution ot the equation (equation omitted), is given. As application, we get new real solutions to the matrix equation (equation omitted) by applying the results of Zhang. Yang and Cao [SIAM.J.Matrix Anal.Appl, 21(1999), pp: 642-645] and Chen [SIAM.J.Matrix Anal.Appl, 22(2001), pp:965-970]. At the same time, all solutions of the matrix equation (equation omitted) are also given.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the new method for selection of a close to optimal scalar control of linear time-periodic system. The case of scalar control is considered, the gain matrix being assumed to be at worst periodic with the system period T. The form of gain matrix may have various kinds but must have same period, for example, one of each element being represented by Fourier series. As the optimal gain matrix I consider the matrix ensuring the minimum value of the larger real part of the Poincare exponents of the system. Finally we present a pole placement algorithm to make the given system be stable. It is possible to determine the stability of the given periodic system without get the analytic solution. The application of the method does not require the construction of the Floquet solution. At present state of determination of the gain matrix for this case will be done only by systematic numerical search procedures.

  • Shell structures are widely used in a variety of engineering application, and mathematical solution of shell structures are available only for a few special cases. The solution of shell structure is more complicated when it has such condition as winkler foundation, other problems. In this study many simplified methods (analogy of beam on elastic foudation, finite element method and transfer matrix method) are applied to analyze a hemisphere-cylindrical shell structures on elastic foundation. And the transfer matrix method is extensively used for the structural analysis because of its merit in the theoretical backgroud and applicability. Therefore, this paper presents the analysis of hemisphere-cylindrical shell structure base on the transfer matrix method. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in FORTRAN language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with finite element method.

  • This article presents the differential system that governs the mechanical behaviour of a curved-beam element, with varying cross-section area, subjected to generalized load. This system is solved by an exact procedure or by the application of a new numerical recurrence scheme relating the internal forces and displacements at the two end-points of an increase in its centroid-line. This solution has a transfer matrix structure. Both the stiffness matrix and the equivalent load vector are obtained arranging the transfer matrix. New structural matrices have been defined, which permit to determine directly the unknown values of internal forces and displacements at the two supported ends of the curved-beam element. Examples are included for verification.

  • This paper describes design and performance test of dual-mode horn antenna for HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) in 47.2 - 47.5 GHz and 47.9 - 48.2 GHz bands. To obtain the optimal geometry parameters of it. the conical section is represented by a stepped transition composed of a set of cylindrical waveguide sections. For each step. the corresponding generalized scattering matrix is calculated. The elements of the matrices at the open end of the horn, are calculated by the rigorous formulas of the factorization method. To verify the theoretical results, a horn breadboard was manufactured for the medium frequency of 47.7 GHz and its radiation beam patterns were measured. The calculated and theoretical results are in good agreement.

  • Guided tissue regeneration, bone graft procedures, and application of growth factors have been used to regenerate lost periodontal tissues. Recently, enamel matrix derivative has been introduced into periodontal regeneration procedures in expectation of promoting new bone and cementum formation. The purpose' of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel matrix derivative in 1-wall intrabony defects in beagle dogs. For this purpose, each dog was anesthesized using intravenous anesthesia and mandibular 1st, 3rd premolars were extracted. 2 months later, the 1-wall intrabony defects(mesio-distal width: 4mm, depth: 4mm) were created on the distal side of 2nd premolars and mesial side of 4th premolars. The control group was treated with debridement alone, and experimental group was treated with debridement and enamel matrix derivative application. The healing processes were histologically and histometrically observed after 8 weeks and the results were as follows : 1. The length of junctional epithelium was $0.94{\pm}0.80mm$ in the control group, $0.57{\pm}0.42mm$ in the experimental group, with no statistically significant difference between groups. 2. The connective tissue attachment was $1.36{\pm}0.98mm$ in the control group. $0.38{\pm}0.43mm$ in the experimental group, with statistically significant difference between groups(P<0.05). 3. The new cementum formation was $2.49{\pm}1.06mm$ in the control group, $3.59{\pm}0.74mm$ in the experimental group. with statistically significant difference between groups(P<0.05). 4. The new bone formation was $1.92{\pm}0.97mm$ in the control group, $2.32{\pm}0.59mm$ in the experimental group. with no statistically significant difference between groups. Within the limitation to this study protocol, enamel matrix derivative application in 1-wall intrabony defect enhanced new cementum formation. Although there was no statistically significant difference, enamel matrix derivative also seems to be effective in inhibition of apical migration of junctional epithelium and new bone formation.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials fur many high temperature application. However, among the various high temperature environments in which metal matrix composites was applied, thermal shock is known to cause significant degradation in most MMC system. Due to the appreciable difference in coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) between reinforcement and metal matrix, internal stresses are generated following temperature changes. Infernal stresses affect degradation of mechanical properties of MMC by causing microscopic damage in interface and matrix during thermal cycling. Therefore, the nondestructive evaluation on thermal shock damage behavior of SiC/A16061 composite has been carried out using ultrasonics. For this study, SiC fiber reinforced metal matrix composite specimens fabricated by a squeeze casting technique were thermally cycled in the temperature range 298$\~$673 K up to 1000cyc1es. Three point bending test was conducted to investigate the efffct of thermal shock damage on mechanical properties. The relationship between thermal shock damage behavior and the propagation characteristics of surface wave and SH-ultrasonic wave was discussed by considering the result of SEM observation of fracture surface.
