The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of algebraic thinking of the mathematically gifted students and search for how to teach algebraic thinking. Research subjects in this study included 93 students who applied for a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2015 and previously experienced gifted education. Students' responses on an algebraic item of a creative thinking test in mathematics, which was given as screening process for admission were collected as data. A framework of algebraic thinking factors were extracted from literature review and utilized for data analysis. It was found that students showed difficulty in quantitative reasoning between two quantities and tendency to find solutions regarding equations as problem solving tools. In this process, students tended to concentrate variables on unknown place holders and to had difficulty understanding various meanings of variables. Some of students generated errors about algebraic concepts. In conclusions, it is recommended that functional thinking including such as generalizing and reasoning the relation among changing quantities is extended, procedural as well as structural aspects of algebraic expressions are emphasized, various situations to learn variables are given, and activities constructing variables on their own are strengthened for improving gifted students' learning and teaching algebra.
The creative productivity is regarded as an essential factor to perform the gifted education. While it is very important to cultivate and to expand a creative productivity through mathematically problem solving in gifted education, we have difficulties in actual education of the (mathematically) gifted, even are there few researches/studies which deal with teaching and guiding the creative problem solving in mathematically gifted education, it is hard to find a guideline that provides proper ways (or directions) of learning-instruction and evaluation of the mathematically gifted. Therefore in this study, the researcher would provide a learning-instruction model to expand a creative productivity. The learning-instruction model which makes the creative productivity expanded in mathematically gifted education is developed and named MG-CPS(Mathematically Gifted-Creative Problem Solving). Since it reflected characteristics of academic- mathematical creativity and higher thinking level of the mathematically gifted, this model is distinguished from general CPS. So this model is proper to provide a learning experience and instruction to the mathematically gifted.
The purpose of this study is to identify how developed program influence students' creativity by analyzing creative thinking and creative attitude which is appeared when mathematically gifted students get the program expected to improve their creativity. For the study, the 'dimension based geometry exploring program' was developed that consist of twelve lessons. The main idea of it, is implication of the novel . Through a pre and post-test, students's creativity were measured and compared. The results show significant changes on the scores of creative thinking skills and creative attitudes. As the result, mathematically gifted students' creative thinking skills and creative attitudes were improved by applying the of dimension based geometry exploring program.
The purpose of this study was to examine the thinking characteristics of mathematically gifted elementary school students in the process of modified prize-sharing problem solving and each student's thinking changes in the middle of discussion. To determine the relevance of the research task, 19 sixth graders enrolled in a local joint gifted class received instruction, and then 49 students took lessons. Out of them, 19 students attended a gifted education institution affiliated to local educational authorities, and 15 were in their fourth to sixth grades at a beginner's class in a science gifted education center affiliated to a university. 15 were in their fifth and sixth grades at an enrichment class in the same center. Two or three students who seemed to be highly attentive and express themselves clearly were selected from each group. Their behavioral and teaming characteristics were checked, and then an intensive observational case study was conducted with the help of an assistant researcher by videotaping their classes and having an interview. As a result of analyzing their thinking in the course of solving the modified prize-sharing problem, there were common denominators and differences among the student groups investigated, and each student was very distinctive in terms of problem-solving process and thinking level as well.
In this study, researchers developed the criteria evaluating mathematically gifted students' creative products, which contain such evaluation headings as cognitive abilities(; creativity, analytic thinking, expert skill and knowledge), performing ability of the Mathematically Gifted-Creative Problem Solving process. And then a case study is carried out to apply the criteria to an actual condition of mathematically gifted education. This case study shows that how teachers can apply those of model and criteria in actual condition of the mathematically gifted education. Through the criteria above mentioned, the characteristics of creative productivity can be grasped clearly and evaluated in detail.
Mathematically gifted children have creative curiosity about novel tasks deriving from their natural mathematical talents, aptitudes, intellectual abilities and creativities. More effect in nurturing the creative thinking found in brilliant children, letting them approach problem solving in various ways and make strategic attempts is needed. Given this perspective, it is desirable to select open-ended and atypical problems as a task for educational program for gifted children. In this paper, various types of open-ended problems were framed and based on these, teaming activities were adapted into gifted children's class. Then in the problem solving process, the characteristic of bright children's mathematical thinking ability and examples of problem solving strategies were analyzed so that suggestions about classes for bright children utilizing open-ended tasks at elementary schools could be achieved. For this, an open-ended task made of 24 inquiries was structured, the teaching procedure was made of three steps properly transforming Renzulli's Enrichment Triad Model, and 24 periods of classes were progressed according to the teaching plan. One period of class for each subcategories of mathematical thinking ability; ability of intuitional insight, systematizing information, space formation/visualization, mathematical abstraction, mathematical reasoning, and reflective thinking were chosen and analyzed regarding teaching, teaming process and products. Problem solving examples that could be anticipated through teaching and teaming process and products analysis, and creative problem solving examples were suggested, and suggestions about teaching bright children using open-ended tasks were deduced based on the analysis of the characteristic of tasks, role of the teacher, impartiality and probability of approaching through reflecting the classes. Through the case study of a mathematics class for bright children making use of open-ended tasks proved to satisfy the curiosity of the students, and was proved to be effective for providing and forming a habit of various mathematical thinking experiences by establishing atypical mathematical problem solving strategies. This study is meaningful in that it provided mathematically gifted children's problem solving procedures about open-ended problems and it made an attempt at concrete and practical case study about classes fur gifted children while most of studies on education for gifted children in this country focus on the studies on basic theories or quantitative studies.

The purpose of this study is to figure out the perceptional characteristics of mathematically gifted elementary students by comparing the mathematical reasoning ability and errors between mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students. This research has been targeted at 63 gifted students from 5 elementary schools and 63 non-gifted students from 4 elementary schools. The result of this research is as follows. First, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher inductive reasoning ability compared to non-gifted students. Mathematically gifted elementary students collected proper, accurate, systematic data. Second, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher inductive analogical ability compared to non-gifted students. Mathematically gifted elementary students figure out structural similarity and background better than non-gifted students. Third, mathematically gifted elementary students have higher deductive reasoning ability compared to non-gifted students. Zero error ratio was significantly low for both mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students in deductive reasoning, however, mathematically gifted elementary students presented more general and appropriate data compared to non-gifted students and less reasoning step was achieved. Also, thinking process was well delivered compared to non-gifted students. Fourth, mathematically gifted elementary students committed fewer errors in comparison with non-gifted students. Both mathematically gifted elementary students and non-gifted students made the most mistakes in solving process, however, the number of the errors was less in mathematically gifted elementary students.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how mathematically gifted middle school students find out the necessary and sufficient condition for a certain hyperbolic line to be parallel to a given hyperbolic line in Non-Euclidean disc model (Poincar$\acute{e}$ disc model) using the Geometer's Sketchpad. We also investigated their characteristic of mathematical thinking and analyze how they express what they had observed while they did mental experiments in the Poincar$\acute{e}$ disc using computer-aided construction tools, measurement tools and inductive reasoning.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the responses and the behavioral characteristics between mathematically promising students and normal students in solving open-ended problems. For this study, 55 mathematically promising students were selected from the Science Education Institute for the Gifted at Seoul National University of Education as well as 100 normal students from three 6th grade classes of a regular elementary school. The students were given 50 minutes to complete a written test consisting of five open-ended problems. A post-test interview was also conducted and added to the results of the written test. The conclusions of this study were summarized as follows: First, analysis and grouping problems are the most suitable in an open-ended problem study to stimulate the creativity of mathematically promising students. Second, open-ended problems are helpful for mathematically promising students' generative learning. The mathematically promising students had a tendency to find a variety of creative methods when solving open-ended problems. Third, mathematically promising students need to improve their ability to make-up new conditions and change the conditions to solve the problems. Fourth, various topics and subjects can be integrated into the classes for mathematically promising students. Fifth, the quality of students' former education and its effect on their ability to solve open-ended problems must be taken into consideration. Finally, a creative thinking class can be introduce to the general class. A number of normal students had creativity score similar to those of the mathematically promising students, suggesting that the introduction of a more challenging mathematics curriculum similar to that of the mathematically promising students into the general curriculum may be needed and possible.
This study qualitatively investigates the nature of the challenges that a student who is highly successful in mathematics faces in learning college-level elementary statistics. The study draws on the constructs of eagerness, flexibility and willingness to characterize the necessary disposition for critical thinking that is essential in learning statistics. The case study is based on data collected through a survey assessment and a follow-up interview with a mathematics major enrolled in an elementary college statistics course at the time of the study. The qualitative analysis relies on the student's verbal descriptions of the challenges he was experiencing in the course. The findings suggest that while his strong inclination towards inquisitive learning and strong understanding of mathematical concepts supported this student's mathematics learning, the same characteristics might have been causing him difficulties in learning college-level elementary statistics.
