Aiming at the mechanical and structural characteristics of the contact zone composite rock, the uniaxial compression tests and numerical studies were carried out. The interaction forms and formation mechanisms at the contact interfaces of different materials were analyzed to reveal the effect of interaction on the mechanical behavior of composite samples. The research demonstrated that there are three types of interactions between the two materials at the contact interface: constraint parallel to the interface, squeezing perpendicular to the interface, and shear stress on the interface. The interaction is mainly affected by the differences in Poisson's ratio and elastic modulus of the two materials, stronger interface adhesion, and larger interface inclination. The interaction weakens the strength and stiffness of the composite sample, and the magnitude of weakening is positively correlated with the degree of difference in the mechanical properties of the materials. The tensile-shear stress derived from the interaction results in the axial tensile fracture perpendicular to the interface and the interfacial shear facture. Tensile cracks in stronger material will propagation into the weaker material through the bonded interface. The larger inclination angle of the interface enhances the effect of composite tensile/shear failure on the overall sample.
Application of a stronger and more durable material for reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) might be an effective way to insure the integrity and increase the efficiency of nuclear power plants. A series of research projects to apply the SA508 Gr.4 steel in ASME code to RPVs are in progress because of its excellent strength and durability compared to commercial RPV steel (SA508 Gr.3 steel). In this study, the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel and SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel were investigated. The differences in the stable phases between these two low alloy steels were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation using ThermoCalc. They were then compared to microstructural features and correlated with mechanical properties. Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel shows the upper bainite structure that has coarse cementite in the lath boundaries. However, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows the mixture of lower bainite and tempered martensite structure that homogeneously precipitates the small carbides such as $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_7C_3$ due to an increase of hardenability and Cr addition. In the mechanical properties, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel has higher strength and toughness than Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Ni and Cr additions increase the strength by solid solution hardening. In addition, microstructural changes from upper bainite to tempered martensite improve the strength of the low alloy steel by grain refining effect, and the changes in the precipitation behavior by Cr addition improve the ductile-brittle transition behavior along with a toughening effect of Ni addition.
The oxidation behavior and the thermal stability of nanocrystalline Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound were investigated. $Al_3Ti$ intermetallic compound, which has a potential for high temperature structural material, was fabricated by mechanical alloying(MA) with $8at.\%$ Mn to enhance the thermal stability and ductility. And Al-25Ti-8Mn intermetallic compound was sintered by spark plasma sintering(SPS) at $700^{\circ}C$. After sintering process, cubic $Ll_2$ structure was maintained without phase transformation and the grain size was about 50nm. To investigate the oxidation behavior of the specimens, thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) was performed at 700, 800, 900, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in $O_2$. As the temperature increased from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$ the weight gain of specimens increased. However at $1000^{\circ}C$, unlike the oxidation behavior of $700^{\circ}C\;to\;900^{\circ}C$, the weight gain of specimen decreased drastically and the transition from linear rate region to parabolic rate region occurred rapidly due to the dense $\alpha-Al_2O_3$.
The study of grinding behavior characteristics on aluminum powders and carbon nano tubes (CNTs) has recently gained scientific interest due to their useful effect in enhancing advanced nano materials and components, which significantly improves the property of new mechatronics integrated materials and components. We performed a series of dry grinding experiments using a planetary ball mill to systematically investigate the grinding behavior during Al/CNTs nano composite fabrication. This study focused on a comparative study of the various experimental conditions at several variations of rotation speeds, grinding time and with and without CNTs. The results were monitored for the particle size distribution, median diameter, crystal structure from XRD pattern and particle morphology at a given grinding time. It was observed that pure aluminum powders agglomerated with low rotation speed and completely enhanced powder agglomeration. However, Al/CNTs composites were achieved at maximum experiment conditions (350 rpm, 60 min.) of this study by a mechanical alloy process for Al/CNTs mixed powders because the grinding behavior of Al/CNTs composite powder was affected by addition of CNTs. Indeed, the powder morphology and crystal size of the composite powders changed more by an increase of grinding time and rotation speed.

Hot stamping is an effective and suitable process widely used in automotive applications, though critical issues such as the transfer of the coating materials and build-up of these materials on tool surfaces have been encountered. Past researches figured out the resultant wear phenomenon using pin-on-disc and drawing (for example, strip drawing and deep drawing) methods to mimic the process and analyzed the wear behavior with respect to the influencing factors such as surface coating, load, and roughness. Although the pin-on-disc is a conventional and widely-used method, it presented a methodological limitation when simulating the hot stamping process by forming a new blank each time, and hence, a drawing-based friction method has been proposed and developed. Each drawing method applies loads in a different way, resulting in a different wear behavior. Notably, the deep drawing process is most similar to the hot stamping process compared to other drawing methods. In this paper we present a review of the friction testing methods mimicking the hot stamping process and the associated wear behavior. This can be helpful in presenting a step-by-step approach and different perspectives on the wear behavior in the hot stamping process.
Using non-biodegradable polymers is a severe environmental problem as they are not recyclable and generate a large amount of waste. Biopolymers, such as starch-based composites, have been considered one of the most promising replacement materials. These eco-friendly materials have the advantage of being low-cost, biodegradable, and obtained from renewable sources. However, as starch tends to be brittle and hydrophilic, it can make these materials unusable when exposed to water and limit its processability for further applications. In this work, a biobased modified starch was grafted using two bioderived materials, lauryl methacrylate (LMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA), by radical polymerization. A polylactic acid (PLA) composite based on the modified starch (m-St) was fabricated to enhance its toughness. These samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR and 13C NMR analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy. The starch was successfully grafted, thus improving the compatibility with the PLA matrix. The mechanical properties of these films were also studied. Results from mechanical tests showed a slight enhancement of the mechanical performance of these composites when m-St was added to the PLA matrix. Such behavior is related to the improved dispersion of m-St 1:2 on PLA, confirmed by SEM images showing enhanced compatibility between modified starch and PLA matrix. This indicated excellent properties of the produced composite film for further eco-friendly applications.
It was reported that the semi-solid forming process has many advantages over the conventional forming process, such as a long die life, good mechanical properties and energy savings. It is very important, however, to control liquid segregation to gain mechanical property improvement of materials. During forming process, Rheology material has complex characteristics, thixotropic behavior. Also, difference of velocity between solid and liquid in the semi-solid state material makes a liquid segregation and specific stress variation. Therefore, it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology Process to be Performed. General Plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the behavior of rheology material. The behavior and stress of solid particle in the rheology material during forging process is affected by viscosity, temperature and solid fraction. In this study, compression experiments of aluminum alloy were performed under each other tool shape. In addition, the dynamics behavior compare with Okano equation to Power law model which is viscosity equation.
This paper deals with the effects of counterpart materials on the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings. STS316 powders were flame-sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using the applied loads of 15 N. AISI52100, $Al_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$ balls were used as counterpart materials. Wear behavior of STS316 coatings against different counterpart materials were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings strongly depends on the type of counterpart material. Dominant wear mechanism was similar for all studied materials as failure of adhesion film except for Si3N4 used as counterpart material. In the case of Si3N4 used as counterpart material, dominant wear mechanism was abrasion.
In this paper, the relaxation behavior of the regenerated silk fibroin (SF) films was investigated using dielectric thermal analysis (DETA), and compared with the dynamic mechanical behavior obtained from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), in order to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of dielectric behavior of SF film and identify the differences between the two analyses. Compared to DMTA, DETA exhibited a higher sensitivity on the molecular relaxation behaviors at low temperature ranges that showed a high $\gamma$-relaxation peak intensity without noise. However, it was not effective to examine the relaxation behaviors at high temperatures such as $\alpha-$ and ${\alpha}_c$-relaxations that showed a shoulder peak shape. On the contrary, DMTA provided more information regarding the relaxation behaviors at high temperatures, by exhibiting the changes in width, intensity and temperature shift of the $\alpha$-relaxation peak according to various crystallinities. Conclusively, DETA and DMTA can be utilized in a complementary manner to study the relaxation behavior of SF over a wide temperature range, due to the different sensitivity of each technique at different temperatures.
