The development of a wear resistant hard-metal tappet in diesel engines

  • Diesel engines have many sliding parts with solid body contact. For example, a piston-ring and a cylinder bore, a valve and a valve-seat, a cam and a valve tappet. These parts have a severe wear problem. during engine life times. During these times, the valve tappet has abnormal wear such as scuffing and pitting due to a high hertzian contact stress between the cam and the tappet. Excessive wear problems frequently occur to both the cam and the tappet. To solve these problems, we developed an advanced wear resistant tappet. The developed tappet consisted of a hard-metal wear part and a steel body. To increase a bonding strength, those two parts, were directly bonded to each other. Also to decrease a bonding temperature, we developed the composition of Ni-binder materials in the hard metal. To estimate the wear characteristics of the newly developed tappet, we performed wear tests and engine dynamo tests in order to compare them with a conventional Fe-base tappet. As a result, the newly developed tappet has better wear characteristics than those of the conventional tappet. In addition, we performed a 100,000km field-test, and the newly developed tappet showed much improved wear resistance.

  • The materials, parts, and equipment industries are the backbone of the manufacturing industry and a key element of competitiveness. However, in the case of Korea, as it relies on foreign countries for core materials, parts, and equipment, it is in danger of not only industrial competitiveness, but also security. This study first looked at the outline and current address of the materials, parts, and equipment industries, identified problems and improvements, and examined the efforts and achievements so far for the localization of materials, parts, and equipment in Korea. In addition, after looking at the improvement measures for the government's material, parts, and equipment industry at the institutional level or at the ecological level, the current status and actual condition of localization of local materials, parts and equipment were investigated, and problems and improvements were analyzed. Lastly, this study presented a technology development plan for localization of parts and materials in the region and various institutional improvement plans related to commercialization.

Effect of R&D competence of Materials·Parts·Equipment Corporations on management performance

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of SMEs' R&D competence on management performance. Research design, data, and methodology: The empirical data of this study are derived from 2,375 SMEs that participated in the material, parts, and equipment research and development support project conducted from 2014 to 2018. Among them, 2,230 data were analyzed by classifying them into high-tech and low-tech fields. SPSS 24.0 was used for statistical analysis and correlation analysis and T-TEST were applied. Results: It was analyzed that the level of R&D organization, research personnel, and the number of patent registrations all affected operating profit and sales. In particular, it has been proven that research personnel have a greater impact on management performance among the level of R&D organization, research personnel, and the number of patent registrations. In addition, there was a difference between high-tech and low-tech industries in the impact on operating profit and sales, which are indicators of management performance. Conclusions: This study suggests that R&D competence are strengthened to advance the material, parts, and equipment industries and to promote future growth, while differentiated support is needed according to each company's R&D competence and technology level.

  • The basis of the cobalt demand analysis by use was established via the investigation and analysis of the cobalt materials flow, and the overall cobalt metal material and parts industry structure in Korea was examined to determine the cobalt material flow. The markets of the cobalt material for machinery were studied, including their interrelations, via market and study trends, and relevant plans were examined. The results of the study indicated that the advanced core technology for advanced industry and technology-intensive industry development is required to structurally innovate the parts materials and basic materials industries and to upgrade the catch-up industry structure to the new frontier structure.

  • Today's manufacturing industry is facing challenges from advanced difficult-to-machine materials (WC-Co alloys, ceramics, and composites), stringent design requirements (high precision, complex shapes, and high surface quality), and machining costs. Advanced materials play an increasingly important role in modem manufacturing industries, especially, in aircraft, automobile, tool, die and mold making industries. The greatly-improved thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of the material (such as improved strength, heat resistance, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance), while having yielded enormous economic benefits to manufacturing industries through improved product performance and product design, are making traditional machining processes unable to machine them or unable to machine them economically. In this paper, mechanical characteristic evaluation test of fine powder type WC-Co alloy was accomplished to obtain clear data for miniaturized special die parts machining with high reliability and high quality.

  • The main industries in Chungcheongbuk-do are the smart IT parts; bio-health; and transportation machinery, materials and parts. The transportation, machinery, materials and parts (TMMP) industry is a key source technology for environmentally friendly and intelligent vehicles related to future vehicles in the machinery sector. Business support projects to improve this industry are currently underway. In this study, the number of enterprises, number of employees, amount of shipment, and added value of the enterprises in Chungbuk area were analyzed for the downstream and rear industries of the transportation, machinery, materials, and parts industry to set targets and directions for the technical support projects during the enterprise support. In particular, for the SMEs with less than 50 employees, the changes in the value added per enterprise were analyzed according to the period from the year of foundation. In the case of the rear industry, the value added by companies within three years after foundation has decreased gradually each year, so technical support is needed at the beginning of the startup. Companies between the ages of five and nine years are showing a fluctuating trend each year. Therefore, it is necessary to support business diversification or find new items.

  • Reverse engineering techniques using 3D scanners and 3D printing technologies are being used in various industries. In this paper, the three-dimensional model is designed for automotive hub parts through 3D scanning and reverse engineering, and the design of hub parts is intended to be printed on FDM-style 3D printers to measure and analyze the dimensions of hub parts designed for reverse design and 3D printed hub parts. Experimental result have shown that the dimensions of 3D printed hub parts are small compared to those of the reverse-engineered dimensions, which are due to the shrinkage of filament materials in 3D printing.

A Study on the Technological Competitiveness of Aircraft Infra Industries by using Patents (특허분석을 통한 항공기반산업의 기술경쟁력에 관한 연구)

  • This paper considers the technological competitiveness of aircraft infra industries that are bases of the aircraft industry development in Korea. We performed focus group interviews to aircraft industry specialists and classified the aircraft infra industries by eight fields: metallurgical assembly, general machinery, precision instruments, materials & parts, communication appliances, computer, semi-conductor/ electronic component, electronics. Through the United States patents analysis for the G7 countries and Korea during 1995-2006, we identified the technological specificities and competences of each country. RTA(Revealed Technology Advantage) index and CII(Current Impact Index) are used to examine the technological specificity and technological competence respectively. Finally, we introduced TCI(Technological Competitiveness Index) which could reflect quantitative level as well as qualitative level of patents for each aircraft infra industry. The results show that Korea has occupied the technological competitiveness in the semi-conductor and electronic component industry out of eight aircraft infra industries, and achieved a competitive edge in communication appliance industry in the mid 2000s.

  • The increasing demand for automotive industries to reduce the weight of the vehicles has led to a growing usage of Al alloy powder metallurgy (P/M) parts. In order to control the sintered microstructure and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy powder metallurgical (P/M) parts, it is essential to establish a fundamental understanding of the microstructural development during the sintering process. This paper presents a detailed study of the effect of temperature and initial starting materials on the evolution of microstructure during the sintering of Al-Cu-Mg-Si blends for PM.
