  • Considering factors such as illumination, camera quality variations, and background-specific variations, identifying a face using a smartphone-based facial image capture application is challenging. Face Image Quality Assessment refers to the process of taking a face image as input and producing some form of "quality" estimate as an output. Typically, quality assessment techniques use deep learning methods to categorize images. The models used in deep learning are shown as black boxes. This raises the question of the trustworthiness of the models. Several explainability techniques have gained importance in building this trust. Explainability techniques provide visual evidence of the active regions within an image on which the deep learning model makes a prediction. Here, we developed a technique for reliable prediction of facial images before medical analysis and security operations. A combination of gradient-weighted class activation mapping and local interpretable model-agnostic explanations were used to explain the model. This approach has been implemented in the preselection of facial images for skin feature extraction, which is important in critical medical science applications. We demonstrate that the use of combined explanations provides better visual explanations for the model, where both the saliency map and perturbation-based explainability techniques verify predictions.

  • It is widely recognized that the strength of reinforced concrete members has characteristics of random variations due to the variability of the mechanical properties of concrete and steel, the dimensional error as well as incorrect placement of reinforcing bars. In those sources of randomness, variations in concrete strength may be the one affecting the strength of R.C. members most. The concrete strength is usually assumed to have large uncertainty due to the variations in many factors, such as material properties, proportions of the concrete mix, methods of mixing, transporting, placing and curing, etc. In this study, the random characteristics inherent in the strength of field-cast concrete have been examined based on the data collected by testing standard cylinders made of field-cast concrete and cured under in-situ condition.

  • Variations in the number of early health effects resulting from the severe accidents of the YGN 3&4 nuclear power plants were examined for different combinations of release parameters and meteorological data . The release parameters and meteorological data were selected in combination to define a limited number of basic spectra characterized by release height, heat content, release time, warning time, wind speed, rainfall rate, and atmospheric stability class. Variant seasonal spectra were also defined in order to estimate the potential significance of seasonal variations as a factor determining the incidence or number of early health effects. The results show that there are large differences in consequences from spectrum to spectrum, although an equal amount and mix of radioactive material is released to the atmosphere in each case. Also, there are large differences in the estimated number of health effects from season to season due to distinct seasonal variations in meteorological combinations in Korea. Therefore, it is necessary to consider seasonal characteristics in developing optimum emergency response strategies.

  • The scaling down of metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) for the last several years has contributed to the reduction of the scaling variables and device parameters as well as the operating voltage of the MOSFET. At the same time, the variation in the electrical characteristics of MOSFETs is one of the major issues that need to be solved. Especially because the issue with variation is magnified as the drive voltage is decreased. Therefore, this paper will focus on the variations between electrical characteristics and drain voltage. In order to do this, the test patterned multi-finger MOSFETs using 90-nm process is used to investigate the characteristic variations, such as the threshold voltage, DIBL, subthreshold swing, transconductance and mobility via parasitic resistance extraction method. These characteristics can be analyzed by varying the gate width and length, and the number of fingers. Through this modeling scheme, the characteristic variations of multi-finger MOSFETs can be analyzed.

  • Chromosomes located in the nucleus form discrete units of genetic material composed of DNA and protein complexes. The genetic information is encoded in linear DNA sequences, but its interpretation requires an understanding of three-dimensional (3D) structure of the chromosome, in which distant DNA sequences can be juxtaposed by highly condensed chromatin packing in the space of nucleus to precisely control gene expression. Recent technological innovations in exploring higher-order chromatin structure have uncovered organizational principles of the 3D genome and its various biological implications. Very recently, it has been reported that large-scale genomic variations may disrupt higher-order chromatin organization and as a consequence, greatly contribute to disease-specific gene regulation for a range of human diseases. Here, we review recent developments in studying the effect of structural variation in gene regulation, and the detection and the interpretation of structural variations in the context of 3D chromatin structure.

  • In fast grown softwood, there are very large changes in material properties going outward from the pith to bark such as anatomical, physical and mechanical characteristics. Some of variations in anatomical properties with annual ring were then examined from Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, and Chamaecyparis obtusa, which are major softwoods of plantation in Korea. The large variations of annual ring width during young age of tree tended to stabilize after 25year through the transitional period in 17~23year. The ring density was 1.5~2.4 in 1~10year period, and 3.5~6.3 in 30~35year period, in which juvenile and mature wood were certainly assumed to be formed, respectively. Variations of tracheid length showed functional relationships with annual rings as logarithm. Demarcation between juvenile wood and mature wood could be 16~19year, which was determined from increase rate of tracheid length of 0.2%. Cell wall thickness increased with increase of annual ring even though large variations were observed as well. Variations of cell wall thickness within species were pronounced in latewood than earlywood. The increase of cell wall thickness from juvenile wood to mature wood was predominant in Larix leptolepis as 2.0times, and least in Chamaecyparis obtusa as 1.1 times. Cell diameters showed trends of increase during young age of 1~15year, and consistent afterward. The variations of cell diameter between radial and tangential direction were greater in latewood, and most pronounced in Chamaecyparis obtusa.

  • Vibrations transmitted through rolling tire are major sources of road noise in vehicle interior on the range of $0{\sim}500Hz$. Among various road noises, tire cavity noise makes many problems recently. Vehicle NVH performance has improved better and road surfaces are made well. But tires are changed to high inches and low series. So tire cavity noise becomes more serious. In this paper, a designed material for reducing tire cavity noise is proposed. On the surface inside tire, this material is attached at one position using double-tape. This material disperses the pressure variations inside the tire. So a spindle forces at wheel center are reduced. And tire cavity noise at vehicle interior is also reduced. Durability is verified by tire only test and vehicle test. Noise performance also compared with peak levels after attaching this material.

  • Compression behavior of semi-solid aluminum alloys with controlled solid fractions was investigated in the present study. The stress and strain relationships were obtained from the compression test. Variations of the solid fraction distribution and the material behaviour were investigated for various friction coeffieiants and die speedsd. For a finite element analysis, the semi-solid material was described by a compressible regid viscoplastic model for the solid region and darcy's law for the liquid region. The computed results were compared with experimental data for the validity of the yield criteria.

  • In designing the structures of railway rolling stocks, deterministic methods associated with the concept of a safety factor have been traditionally used. The deterministic approaches based on the mean values of applied loads and material properties have been used as safety verification for the design of rolling-stock car body structures. The uncertainties in the applied loading for the high speed train and the strength of new materials in the rolling stocks require the application of probabilistic approaches to ensure fatigue safety in the desired system. Pressure loadings acting on the car body when the train passes through tunnels show reflected pressure waves for high-speed trains and they may cause a fatigue failure in vehicle bodies. Use of new material technology as body structures also introduces uncertainties in the material strength. A probabilistic approach is more adaptable in designing reliable structures when the pressure waves from the tunnels pounds and new material technology is adopted. In this paper, it is proposed that a fatigue design and assessment method based on a reliability which deals with the loading variations on a railway vehicle due to the pressure reflected in tunnels and the strength variations of material. Equation for the fatigue reliability index has been formulated to calculate the reliability assessment of a vehicle body under fluctuating pressure loadings in a tunnel. Considered in this formulation are the pressure distribution characteristics, the fatigue strength distribution characteristics, and the concept of stress-transfer functions due to the pressure loading.

  • To investigate major factors controlling variations in water quality, principal component analysis and cluster analysis were used to analyze data sets of 12 parameters measured at 23 sampling stations of Jinhae Bay during winter and spring. Principal component analysis extracted three major factors controlling variations of water quality during winter and spring. In winter, major factors included freshwater input, polluted material input, and biological activity. Whereas in spring they were polluted material input, freshwater input, and suspended material input. The most distinct difference in the controlling factors between winter and spring was that the freshwater input was more important than the polluted material input in winter, but the polluted material input was more important than the freshwater input in spring. Cluster analysis grouped 23 sampling stations into four clusters in winter and five clusters in spring respectively. In winter, the four clusters were A (station 5), B (stations 1, 2), C (station 4), and D (the remaining stations). In spring, the five clusters included A (station 5), B (station 1), C (station 3), D (station 6), and E (the remaining stations). Intensive management of the water quality of Masan and Hangam bays could improve the water quality of Jinhae Bay since the polluted materials were mainly introduced into Jinhae Bay through Masan and Hangam bays.
