  • The effect of structure size on the nominal strength of unidirectional fiber-polymer composites, failing by propagation of a kink band with fiber microbuckling, is analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Tests of novel geometrically similar carbon-PEEK specimens, with notches slanted so as to lead to a pure kink band (without shear or splitting cracks), are conducted. The specimens are rectangular strips of widths 15.875, 31.75. and 63.5 mm (0.625, 1.25 and 2.5 in and gage lengths 39.7, 79.375 and 158.75 mm (1.563, 3.125 and 6.25 in.). They reveal the existence of a strong (deterministic. non-statistical) size effect. The doubly logarithmic plot of the nominal strength (load divided by size and thickness) versus the characteristic size agrees with the approximate size effect law proposed for quasibrittle failures in 1983 by Bazant This law represents a gradual transition from a horizontal asymptote, representing the case of no size effect (characteristic of plasticity or strength criteria), to an asymptote of slope -1/2 (characteristic of linear elastic fracture mechanics. LEFM) . The size effect law for notched specimens permits easy identification of the fracture energy of the kink bandand the length of the fracture process zone at the front of the band solely from the measurements of maximum loads. Optimum fits of the test results by the size effect law are obtained, and the size effect law parameters are then used to identify the material fracture characteristics, Particularly the fracture energy and the effective length of the fracture process zone. The results suggest that composite size effect must be considered in strengthening existing concrete structural members such as bridge columns and beams using a composite retrofitting technique.

  • The phase changes and variations of elemental contents in hematite medicinal mineral were investigated by a traditional processing operation including heating and quenching in vinegar. Hematite was processed at $650^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ through at least 5 processing cycles. Metal extraction tests in water were carried out with the processed hematite. Heating and quenching in vinegar could not change the phase of hematite. The effect of this traditional method was not clear because there were no variational trends between extracted elements and the number of processing cycles at $650^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. However, the traditional processing operation of heating and quenching in vinegar was very effective to change the hematite mineral towards soft and easily crushing medicinal material.

  • It is well known that a considerable amount of scatter is shown in experimental results relating to fatigue crack growth even under identical and constant amplitude cyclic loading conditions. Moreover, flux cored arc welding (FCAW) is a common method used to join thick plates such as the structural members of large scale offshore structures and very large container ships. The objective of this study was to investigate the macro- and microscopic observations of the fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of the FCAWed API 2W Gr. 50 steel joints typically applied for offshore structures. In order to clearly understand the randomness of the fatigue crack growth behavior in the materials of three different zones, the weld metal (WM), heat affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM), experimental fatigue crack growth tests for each of five specimens were performed on ASTM standard compact tension (CT) specimens under constant amplitude cyclic loading. Special focus was placed on the fatigued fracture surfaces. As a result, a different behavior was observed at the macro-level, depending on the type of material property: BM, HAZ, or WM. The variability in the fatigue crack growth rate for WM was higher than that of BM and HAZ.

  • Internal pressure of vacuum interrupter (VI) is one of the most important parameters in VI operation and may increase due to the outgassing from the materials inside VI or gas permeation through metal flange or ceramic vessel. The increase of the pressure above a certain level leads to the failures of switching or insulation. Therefore, an effective pressure check of VI is essential and an analysis of partial discharge (PD) characteristics is an effective monitoring method to identify the degree of the internal pressure of VI. This paper introduces a research work on monitoring the internal pressure of VI by analyzing PDs which were measured using a capacitive PD coupler. The authors have developed cost effective capacitive coupler based on the ceramic material that has an excellent insulation properties and the main component of the capacitive coupler is made by SrTiO3. Detectable internal pressure range and distinguishability of the internal pressure of VI were investigated. From the PD tests results, the internal pressure range, from $10^{-2}$ torr to 500 torr, can be monitored by PD measurements using the capacitive coupler and PD inception voltage (PDIV) follows the Paschen's law. In addition, rise time of PD pulse at 13.2kV decreases with the increase of the internal pressure of VI.

  • In-situ California Bearing Ratio(CBR) test has been widely used for evaluating the subgrade condition in pavements. However, because the in-situ CBR test is expensive and takes time for operation, it is difficult to figure out the in-situ characteristics of subgrade strength in detail. For faster and economical operation, the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer(DCP) has been often utilized for estimating the subgrade strength in the field. The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between CBR value and DCP index of the embankment constructed with mixtures of soil and waste lime. Waste lime used in this study is producted as a by-product in the manufacturing process of making $Na_2CO_3$ from local chemical factory in Incheon. In this field measurement, the geotechnical tests such as field water content, field density, field CBR test, and dynamic cone penetration test were conducted.

  • In order to reduce carbon dioxide emission in construction industry, less amount of cement use can be one of the alternatives to manufacture concrete. One of the non-sintered construction materials are limestone, which is the raw material to manufacture ordinary Portland cement(OPC). A large amount of limestone have already been used as binders such as blended cement in Europe and US. Even European countries were already established the standard of blended cement, where the limestone can be used up to 35 percent. In this study, experimental researches were conducted to investigate the effects of limestone replacement on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete with 15%, 25% and 35% of limestone substitution to use limestone in blended cement. 15 percent use of limestone in blended cement developed equivalent or even higher compressive strengths compared to Plain mixture. Porosity of limestone cement with 15 percent substitution was much lower than Plain mixture. Most durability tests such as concrete carbonation, freeze-thaw cycle and drying shrinkage strains were conducted to evaluate long-term performance, and the test results indicated that 15 percent of limestone use did not significantly influence on the concrete durability compared with plain concrete.

  • Degraded shear performance of reinforced concrete members with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) compared to flexural strength is a problem. To address this, steel fibers can be used as concrete reinforcement material. In this study, the strength and deformation characteristics of SFRC beams using RCA were to be determined by shear tests. Major experimental variables include the volume fraction of steel fiber (0, 0.5%, 1%), the replacement rate of RCA (0%, 100%), and the shear span ratio (a/d = 1, 2). As a result of the experiment, the shear strength of the specimen increased as the rate of mixing steel fiber increased. For specimens with RCA and 1% steel fiber, the maximum shear strengths increased by 1.77 - 6.25% compared to specimens with normal coarse aggregate (NCA). On the other hand, at 0-0.5% steel fiber, the shear strengths of RCA specimens were reduced by 24.2% to 49.2% compared to NCA specimens. This indicates that reinforcement with 1% volume fraction of steel fiber greatly contributes to preventing shear strength reduction due to the use of RCA.

  • Transformation behavior and shape memory characteristics of Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr (x=0.5-2.0) alloys have been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and thermal cycling tests under constant load. Two-stage B2-B19-B19' transformation occurred in Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr alloys. The B2-B19 transformation was separated clearly from the B19-B19' transformation in Ti-44.0Ni-5Cu-1.0Cr and Ti-43.5Ni-5Cu-1.5Cr alloys. A temperature range where the B19 martensite exists was expanded with increasing Cr content because decreasing rate of Ms (85 K / % Cr) was larger than that of Ms' (17 K / % Cr). Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr alloys were deformed in plastic manner with a fracture strain of 68% ~ 43% depending on Cr content. Substitution of Cr for Ni improves the critical stress for slip deformation in a Ti-45Ni-5Cu alloy due to solid solution hardening.

  • Laboratory model tests were conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geogrid reinforced earth walls using fiber-mixed soil backfill with different surcharge loads and reinforcement spacing. The models were built in the box having dimensions, 100cm tall, 140cm long, and 100cm wide. The reinforcements used were geonet(tensile strength, 0.79t/m) and geogrid(tensile strength, 2.26t/m). Decomposed granite soil(ML) with or without polypropylene fiber was used backfill material. Strain gauges and LVDTs were installed on the retaining walls to measure the strain of the reinforcements and the displacements of the wall facings.
