  • The methods in wood processing are so limited at present that a scope of its utilization is restricted. This often makes wood itself less valuable as a material comparing with other materials, that is, plastics, metals, and glass. Such differences are due to a lack of plasticity in wood, i.e. it cannot be melted, dissolved, or softened sufficiently for molding. However, once plastic properties are added to wood, it becomes more useful material. This further broadens the method in wood processing to a variety of fields. In this way, wooden material which is limited in use can be modified into a high quality product with additional value. Furthermore, utilization of wastes from wood, for example, would be made viable. In this study, thermoplasticization was carried out by benzylation of wood(sawdust). Various factors those affect the reaction were tested to produce benzylated wood with different degrees of substitution. Reaction temperature and time were the quite important factors. Optimum reaction temperature was 110$^{\circ}C$, and weight percent gains(WPG) of final products increased gradually with the increase of reaction time. The pretreatment (or preswelling) of wood with alkaline solution had a critical effect on benzylation. and the concentration of alkaline solution should be above 30% to obtain high weight percent gain. The thermal flow temperature of the benzylated wood decreased with the increase in weight percent gain, that of 80% weight percent gain is about 200$^{\circ}C$.

  • According to researchers, the influential factors of scouring are generally divided into three factors: the flow conditions, the type and position of structures, and the characteristics of bed materials. In addition, scouring is affected by the 3-dimensional turbulent boundaries, the unsteady flow, the movement of sediment in the scour-hole area, the approach flow velocity and depth, the width of bridge foundation/pier, and the particle size of bed materials. However, it is difficult to estimate the scour depth near bridge piers when all conditions are factored in at once. Therefore, for reasonably accurate estimates of scour depth, it is essential to consider sufficiently the flow force and resisting force for scour. That is, to determine the shear stress concerning the bed material distribution is needed. In this study, the experiments were performed under the condition of a steady state of flow. As a result, scouring occurred at velocity ratios of 0.476,$(V/V_c=0.476)$, and the scour depth was increased linearly as the velocity ratio increased. in addition, the average values of shear stress ratio at zero scouring depth in both rectangular and circular piers were approximately 7$(\tau_c/\tau_{approach})$ and in the case for same size bed particle material. The results of this study can be used for the fundamental material for estimating the scour depth of bed materials.

  • This paper describes a methodology for automating the material handling equipment (MHE) evaluation and selection processes by combining knowledge-based rules and fuzzy multi-criteria decision making approach. The methodology is proposed to solve the MHE selection problems under fuzzy environment. At the primary stage, the most appropriate MHE type among the alternatives for each material flow link is searched. Knowledge-based rules are employed to retrieve the alternatives for each material flow link. To consider and compare the alternatives, multiple design factors are considered. These factors include both quantitative and qualitative measures. The qualitative measures are converted to numerical measures using fuzzy logic. The concept of fuzzy logic is applied to evaluation matrices used for the selection of the most suitable MHE through a fuzzy linguistic approach. Thus, this paper demonstrates the potential applicability of fuzzy theory in the MHE applications and provides a systemic guidance in the decision-making process.

  • A novel poly(AM-DMDAAC)/MMT superabsorbent nanocomposites are prepared by radical polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) and anhydrous sodium sulfite as a free radical initiator and N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. In this paper, an optimization study on the synthesis of superabsorbent nanocomposites is carried out. Orthogonal array experiment indicates that the optimized conditions is acrylamide (AM) content 23 wt%, diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAAC) content 6 wt%, montmorillonite (MMT) content 4 wt%, initiator content 0.2 wt% and crosslinker content 0.02 wt%. Under the optimization syntheses conditions concluded, the maximum water absorbency in distilled water is $659.53g{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and in 2 wt% sodium chloride solution is $116.25g{\cdot}g^{-1}$. Compared with the range values of different factors ($R_j$), the order of significance factors in distilled water is C (MMT) > B (DMDAAC) > A (AM) > D (crosslinker) > E (initiator). MMT is intercalated during polymerization reaction and a nanocomposite structure is formed as shown by TEM analysis and XRD analysis.

  • As a demand of higher power photovoltaic modules, shingled, multi-busbar, half-cell, and bifacial techniques are developed. Multi-busbar module has advantage for large amount of light havesting. And, half-cell is high power module for reducing resistive losses and higher shade tolerance. Recently, researches on multi-busbar is focused on reliability according to adhesion and intermetallic compound between Sn-Pb solder and Ag electrode. And half-cell module is researched to comparing with full-sized cell module for structure difference. In this study, we investigated the factors affecting to efficiency and adhesion of multi-wires half-cell module according to wire thickness, solder thickness, and flux. The results of solar simulator and peel test was that peel strength and efficiency of soldered cell is not related. But samples with flux including high solid material showed high efficiency. The results of FE-SEM and EDX line scan on cross-section between wire and Ag electrode for different flux showed thickness of solder joint between wire and Ag electrode is increasing through solid material increasing. Flux including high solid material would affect to solder behavior on Ag electrode. Higher solid material occurred lower growth of IMC layer because solder permeate to sider of wire ribbon than Ag electrode. And it increased fill factor for high efficiency. In soldering process, amount of solid material in flux and solder thickness are the factor related with characteristic of soldered photovoltaic cell.

  • We analyzed the correlation between breakdown voltage(BDV) of liquid nitrogen(LN2) and factors. The chosen factors affecting the breakdown are the diameter of electrode, gap length, temperature of LN2, and pressure of LN2. The BDV of LN2 was increased with increasing the diameter, the gap length and the pressure. And The BDV of LN2 was increased with decreasing the temperature. However, correlation coefficient was different from each other depending on the situation. The BDV exhibited a very high correlation coefficient of 0.92227 to dependence on the diameter. And a very high correlation coefficient of 0.94980 to dependence on the pressure under sphere(D 7.5 mm)-plane electrode. When the pressure is applied, sphere-plane electrode is the correlation coefficient was higher than that of the needle-plane electrode. It shows the dependence of a temperature coefficient of -0.758290 ~ -0.39946 under needle-plane electrode.

  • A multi-layered orthotropic material with a center crack is subjected to an anti-plane shear loading. The problem is formulated as a mixed boundary value problem by using the Fourier integral transform method. This gives a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The integral equation is solved numerically and anti-plane shear stress intensity factors are analyzed in terms of the material orthotropy for each layer, number of layers, crack length to layer thickness and the order of the loading polynomial. Also, the case of monolithic and hybrid composites are investigated in terms of the local fiber volume fraction and the global fiber volume fraction.

  • Formability in deep drawing process depends not only on a drawability of workpiece material but also on process conditions such as die punch comer radius, lubricant conditions, punch-die clearance etc. For instance, bending resistance should be reduced by increasing die round appropriately, drawing load should be minimized by improving the lubricant condition between die and material, and blanking load should be increased by selecting a pertinent punch round and by augmenting the friction resistance in punch. In this study, a multi-stage deep drawing process is analyzed using ABAQUS. The effects of formability factors, such as die shoulder radius, punch-die clearance and friction coefficient are investigated, and the results are also discussed in detail.

  • Germanium (Ge) is a promising material for next generation nanoelectronics and multiple junction solar cells. This work investigated the electrical properties in Cu/p-type Ge Schottky diodes, using current-voltage (I-V) measurements. The Schottky barrier heights were 0.66, 0.59, and 0.70 eV from the forward ln(I)-V, Cheung, and Norde methods, respectively. The ideality factors were 1.92 and 1.78 from the forward ln(I)-V method and Cheung method, respectively. Such high ideality factor could be associated with the presence of an interfacial layer and interface states at the Cu/p-Ge interface. The reverse-biased current transport was dominated by the Poole-Frenkel emission rather than the Schottky emission.
