The response of concrete structures subjected to shock and blast load involves a rapid transient phase, during which material breach may take place. Such an effect could play a crucial role in determining the residual state of the structure and the possible dispersion of the fragments. Modelling of the transient phase response poses various challenges due to the complexities arising from the dynamic behaviour of the materials and the numerical difficulties associated with the evolving material discontinuity and large deformations. Typical modelling approaches include the traditional finite element method in conjunction with an element removal scheme, various meshfree methods such as the SPH, and the mesoscale model. This paper is intended to provide an overview of several alternative approaches and discuss their respective applicability. Representative concrete material models for high pressure and high rate applications are also commented. Several recent application studies are introduced to illustrate the pros and cons of different modelling options.

Topology optimization has been widely used for the optimal structure design for weight reduction and high performance. Since the result of three-dimensional topology optimization is represented by the discrete material distribution in finite elements, it is hard to interpret from a design point of view. In this paper, the method for interpreting three-dimensional topology optimization resuIt into a series of cross-sectional curve representation is proposed and interfaced with the existing CAD system for the practical use. The concept of node density and virtual grid is introduced to transform element density values into grid density and material boundaries in each cross section are identified based on the element volume rate to satisfy the amount of material specified in the original design intent. Design exampIes show that three-dimensional topology result can be converted into a form of curve CAD model and the seamless interface with CAD software can be achieved.

In this paper the corona discharge in SF$_{6}$ gas used as insulating material in lots o high voltage equipment, is simulated by finite element method with Flux-Corrected Transport(FCT) method. By application of proposed method the negative corona discharge characteristics in needle to plane electrode is analyzed with time step. For the accuracy of analysis the secondary electron emission by photon and ion are also considered as well as the accuracy of analysis the secondary electron emission by photon and ion are also considered as well as townsend first ionization and electron attachment. The calculated results show that the electric field intensity between anode and ion group is decreased as times go-by according to field distortion by those space charge. Accordingly the electron density is decreased strongly by the attatchment effect of SF6 gas so that the corona discharge becomes extinguished abruptly.y.
In the current study, the effect of small surface defects in the starting material including roughness, indentations, or scratches, which are perpendicular to the direction of drawing, on the product quality is investigated using the finite element method. An axisymmetric defect is assumed. Such defects are defined by a cylindrical defect area and two tapered regions connecting the defect area to the non-defective area of the material. Various conditions for these initial surface defects are considered, including defect depth, defect slope and defect length. To describe the plastic deformation of the defect in detail during the simulation, local remeshing is applied. Based on the finite element results, defect disappearance maps were generated. It was found that defect disappearance is significantly dependent on the defect depth and the defect length coupled with the defect slope.

The compression behavior of semi-solid materials in studied from a viewpoint of yield criteria and analysis methods. To describe the behavior of materials in semi-solid state, several theories have been proposed by extending the concept of plasticity of porous compressible materials. in the present work, the upper-bound method and the finite element method are used to model the simple compression process using yield criteria of Kuhn and Doraivelu. Segregation between solid and liquid which cause defect of product is analysed for Sn-15%Pb alloy is compared with the experimental result of Charreyron et al..
Traditional damage detection methods for nonlinear structures are often based on simplified models, such as the mass-spring-damper and shear-building models, which are insufficient for predicting the vibration responses of a real structure. Conventional global nonlinear finite element model updating methods are computationally intensive and time consuming. Thus, they cannot be applied to practical structures. A decentralized approach for identifying the nonlinear material parameters is proposed in this study. With this technique, a structure is divided into several small zones on the basis of its structural configuration. The unknown material parameters and measured vibration responses are then divided into several subsets accordingly. The structural parameters of each subset are then updated using the vibration responses of the subset with the Newton-successive-over-relaxation (SOR) method. A reinforced concrete and steel frame structure subjected to earthquake loading is used to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. The parameters in the material constitutive model, such as compressive strength, initial tangent stiffness and yielding stress, are identified accurately and efficiently compared with the global nonlinear model updating approach.

This paper presents a new scheme for constructing locking-free finite elements in thick and thin plates, called Discrete Shear Gap element (DSG), using multiphase material topology optimization for triangular elements of Reissner-Mindlin plates. Besides, common methods are also presented in this article, such as quadrilateral element (Q4) and reduced integration method. Moreover, when the plate gets too thin, the transverse shear-locking problem arises. To avoid that phenomenon, the stabilized discrete shear gap technique is utilized in the DSG3 system stiffness matrix formulation. The accuracy and efficiency of DSG are demonstrated by the numerical examples, and many superior properties are presented, such as being a strong competitor to the common kind of Q4 elements in the static topology optimization and its computed results are confirmed against those derived from the three-node triangular element, and other existing solutions.
In this paper, the equivalent material properties of cellular metamaterials with different types of perforations have been presented using finite element (FE) simulation of tensile test in Abaqus commercial software. To this end, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) has been considered for each type of cellular metamaterial with regular array of circular, square, oval and rectangular perforations. Furthermore, both straight and perpendicular patterns of oval and rectangular perforations have been studied. By applying Periodic Boundary conditions (PBC) on the RVE, the actual behavior of cellular material under uniaxial tension has been simulated. Finally, the effective Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and mass density of various metamaterials have been presented as functions of relative density of the RVE
A 2-D four-noded finite element which contains a ${\lambda}$ singularity is developed. The new element is compatible with quadratic standard isoparametric elements. The element is tested on two different examples. In the first example, an edge crack problem is analyzed using two different meshes and different integration orders. The second example is a crack perpendicular to the interface problem which is solved for different material properties and in turn different singularity order ${\lambda}$. The results of those examples illustrate the efficiency of the proposed element.
This paper aims to conduct the reliability-based assessment of the welded joint in the orthotropic steel bridge deck by use of a mesh-insensitive structural stress (MISS) method, which is an effective numerical procedure to determine the reliable stress distribution adjacent to the weld toe. Both the solid element model and the shell element model are first established to investigate the sensitivity of the element size and the element type in calculating the structural stress under different loading scenarios. In order to achieve realistic condition assessment of the welded joint, the probabilistic approach based on the structural reliability theory is adopted to derive the reliability index and the failure probability by taking into account the uncertainties inherent in the material properties and load conditions. The limit state function is formulated in terms of the structural resistance of the material and the load effect which is described by the structural stress obtained by the MISS method. The reliability index is computed by use of the first-order reliability method (FORM), and compared with a target reliability index to facilitate the safety assessment. The results achieved from this study reveal that the calculation of the structural stress using the MISS method is insensitive to the element size and the element type, and the obtained structural stress results serve as a reliable basis for structural reliability analysis.
