  • The local heat/mass transfer coefficients for arrays of impinging circular air jets on a plane surface are determined by means of the naphthalene sublimation method. Spent fluid makes a crossflow in the confined space. The crossflow reduces heat/mass transfer at the small gap distance between the jet plate and impingement surface because of reentrainment of the spent fluid. The present study suggests a new exhaust system having effusion holes in the impinging jet plate. The spent air flow out after impingement just through effusion holes located in the upper plate. This system increases heat/mass transfer coefficients and uniformity for small gap distances(H/d2)

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of upstream rectangular winglet pair (RWP) on the heat/mass transfer coefficients in a dimple. Dimple print diameter was fixed at 20mm and the dimple depth was 4.0mm (0.4H). The dimple surface was coated with naphthalene for mass transfer experiment and the test plate was positioned at a rectangular straight duct whose aspect ratio (W/H) was 20. A rectangular winglet pair was positioned at y/d=-2.5. The RWP angle (β) was varied from 15 to 60. The Reynolds number, based on the duct height (H), was 5,000. with changing the RWP angle (β), the induced vortices had different flow characteristics; longitudinal or transversal vortices. These variation of induced vortices affected on the heat/mass transfer characteristics in the dimple.

  • A heat pump system is constructed to evaluate its performance and heat transfer characteristics with mixtures of R22/R142b as working fluids. The heat transfer in the evaporator and the overall performance are measured and analyzed in terms of the compositions and relevant variables. Possibility of capacity modulation by changing composition is observed without degradation of heat transfer coefficients and coefficient of performance. The cooling capacity is varied continuously within 200 percent based on minimum capacity at constant compressor speed. For similar cooling capacity, COP is improved by mixing two refrigerants and shows maximum value at 60% mass fraction of R22. Average heat transfer coefficients of mixtures decrease in comparison with pure refrigerants at similar cooling capacity and mass flow rate. However, the overall heat transfer coefficients decrease moderately. A cycle simulation is performed in order to manifest the advantages of using refrigerant mixtures, considering experimentally observed heat transfer characteristics.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the heat transfer enhancement by the multiple tripping wires installed on a flat plate. Naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients, and then heat transfer coefficients are calculated using heat/mass transfer analogy. Experiments are performed for the developed and developing flow conditions. Local and average heat transfer coefficients from the flat plate with three tripping wires are compared with those of no and one tripping wire. Remarkable heat transfer enhancements are found resulting from the boundary layer separation by the tripping wires, especially in the laminar boundary layer.

  • Mass transfer experiment by naphthalene sublimation method has great advantages in measurement of local transfer coefficients in the region of a three dimensional flow or for a model of complex geometry, which is considered to be very difficult with conventional heat transfer measurements. Mass transfer data obtained by naphthalene sublimation technique are converted to the heat transfer data through heat/mass transfer analogy. This analogy is valid for a simple or laminar flow, but new insight is needed when applying to a turbulent flow or complex flow such as separation, reattachment and recirculation, The purpose of this research is to investigate how geometries and flow conditions incorporate heat/mass transfer analogy. Mass transfer experiments are performed using naphthalene sublimation technique for a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and rectangular cylinders. And mass transfer data are compared with earlier heat transfer measurements for the same geometries. Usefulness of analogy relation between heat and mass transfer is examined with these results.

  • The present study investigates the two dimensional flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics of wavy duct with various corrugation angles. For the heat/mass transfer coefficients, a naphthalene sublimation technique is used. Numerical analysis and wall pressure measurement show detailed two dimensional flow features. The corrugation angles change from 145 to 100. The operating Reynolds numbers based on the duct hydraulic diameter vary from 700 to 3,000. The duct aspect ratio maintains 7.3. On the pressure wall, strong flow mixing enhances heat/mass transfer coefficients at the front position. In addition, the rear side of pressure wall, the near of peak, is affected by the acceleration and the shedding of main flow. On the suction wall, however, flow separation and reattachment lead to the valley and the peak of heat/mass transfer coefficient. Also, highly increasing boundary layer at the suction wall affects the decrease of heat/masst transfer. As decreasing corrugation angles, the spanwise average Sherwood number increases and the peak or the valley positions of the local Sherwood number are varied.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of refrigerant-oil mixture for horizontal in-tube evaporator have been investigated experimentally. A smooth copper tube and a micro-fin tube with nominal 9.5 mm outer diameter and 1500 mm length were tested. For the pure refrigerant flow, the dependence of the axial heat transfer coefficient on quality was weak in the smooth tube, but in the micro-fin tube, the coefficients were 3 to 10 times greater as quality increases. Oil addition to pure refrigerant in the smooth tube altered the flow pattern dramatically at low mass fluxes, with a resultant enhancement of the wetting area by vigorous foaming. The heat transfer coefficients of the mixture for low and medium qualities were increased at low mass fluxes. In the micro-fin tube, however, the addition of oil deteriorates the local heat transfer performance for most of the quality range, except for low quality. The micro-fin tube consequently loses its advantage of high heat transfer performance for an oil fraction of 5%. Results are presented as plots of local heat transfer coefficient versus quality.

  • Condensation heat transfer experiments for R-22 and R-407C refrigerants mixed with mineral oil and POE oil respectively were performed in straight and U-bend sections of a microfin tube. Experimental parameters were an oil concentration from 0 to 5%, a mass flux from 100 to 400kg/m2s and an inlet quality from 0.5 to 0.9. The enhancement factors for R-22 and R-407C refrigerants at the first straight section decreased continuously as the oil concentration increased. They decreased rapidly as the mass flux decreased and inlet quality increased. The heat transfer coefficients in the U-bend were the maximum at the 90 position. The heat transfer coefficients at the second straight section within the dimensionless length of 48 were larger by a maximum of 33% than the average heat transfer coefficients at the first straight section.

  • In this paper, effects of physical configurations and operating conditions on bubble column performance were analyzed in terms of bubble hydrodynamic and mass transfer parameters. Bubble column with 3 different dimensions and 7 gas diffusers (single / multiple orifice and rigid / flexible orifice) were applied. High speed camera and image analysis program were used for analyzing the bubble hydrodynamic parameters. The local liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kL) was estimated from the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) and the interfacial area (a), which was deduced from the bubble diameter (DB) and the terminal bubble rising velocity (UB). The result showed that the values of kLa and a increased with the superficial gas velocity (Vg) and the size of bubble column. Influences of gas diffuser physical property (orifice size, thickness and orifice number) can be proven on the generated bubble size and the mass transfer performance in bubble column. Concerning the variation of kL coefficients with bubble size, 3 zones (Zone A, B and C) can be observed. For Zone A and Zone C, a good agreement between the experimental and the predicted KL coefficients was obtained (average difference of ±15), whereas the inaccuracy result (of ±40) was found in Zone B. To enhance the high kLa coefficient and absorption efficiency in bubble column, it was unnecessary to generate numerous fine bubbles at high superficial gas velocity since it causes high power consumption with the great decrease of kL coefficients.
