  • Characterization of the various chemical aspects of composite polymers is important for quality control of manufactured polymers. In this study, we compared three suitable matrices (α cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid [CHCA], 2,5 dihydroxy benzoic acid [2,5-DHB], and dithranol), to characterize various synthetic polymers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Although the spectra obtained with the CHCA and 2,5-DHB matrices were generally good, in certain samples ghost peaks disappeared only when dithranol was used as the matrix. Furthermore, we examined the use of sodium trifluoroacetate (NaTFA) as an additive to reduce interference by metals and copolymers in the spectra. In conclusion, appropriate selection of a matrix, according to the characteristics of the polymer, and the use of additives to improve sensitivity are important considerations for polymer analysis and development.

  • The association of cold-heat (CH) pattern and anthropometry/body composition has been suggested in that they are related to thermoregulation. We aimed to study the association of CH pattern and anthropometry/body composition. A total of 1479 individuals aged 50-80 years were included in the study, and their CH pattern were evaluated by a self-administered questionnaire. After adjustment for age and sex, the CH score were significantly correlated with weight, BMI (body mass index), body surface area, waist-hip ratio, fat free mass, body fat mass, body cell mass, intracellular water, extracellular water, and basal metabolic rate; however, the correlation coefficients were mostly low (0.15-0.24). The selected variables for predicting CH score were various according to the methods used for variable selection; however, the adjusted R-squared of the final models were all around 0.12. Thus the most parsimonious model could be the one that includes sex and BMI. In conclusion, various anthropometry and body composition indices were associated with CH pattern. Future studies are necessary to improve the performance of the prediction model.

  • We present a scaling relation between black hole (BH) mass and bulge luminosity for 35 nearby (z<0.1) type 1 active galaxies, selected from the 70-month Swift-BAT X-ray source catalog. Thanks to the unbiased selection and proximity of the parent sample, our sample is suitable to study the physical connection between central black holes and host galaxies. We use the F814W images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on Hubble Space Telescope, to perform the imaging decomposition with GALFIT. With a careful treatment on the PSF model, we measure the I-band bulge brightness robustly. In combination with the BH mass estimated from a single-epoch spectroscopic data, we present the correlation between BH mass and bulge luminosity of the target AGNs. We demonstrate that our sample marginally lies off from the M(BH)-L(bulge) relation of inactive galaxies. We discuss possible physical origins of this discrepancy. Finally, we present how the relation depends on the photometric properties of AGNs and host galaxies, which may provide an useful insight on the co-evolution between BHs and host galaxies.

  • The striking characteristic of the contemporary global security environment is that the nature of threats has become diverse and complex. For example, transnational and non-military threats including terrorism and proliferation of weapon of mass destruction has increased. In this security environment, Advanced countries funnel their investments for defense budgets into the assurance of key force capability and R&D of cutting-edge core technologies, in consideration of future battlefield environments so as to get an edge on not only defense science and technology but also intelligence capabilities. As shown by past practices of the korea's defense acquisition, the ministry of national defense has tried to enhance its force capabilities in the short-term by purchasing foreign weapon systems rather than by investing in domestic R&D. Accordingly, the technological gaps between the korea and advanced countries were widened due to both insufficient investment in development of domestic technologies and avoidance of technological transfer by advanced countries. Thus, for the effective execution of the R&D budget and the successful performance of the projects, the importance of selection, management and evaluation of the R&D projects is emphasized. So, The objective of this study is that the analysis of the proposal-selection evaluation system for the realization of the successful defense core technology R&D projects. This study focused on the improvement of the proposal-selection evaluation model which can be applicable to the national defense core R&D projects. Using the improved proposal-selection evaluation system, we propose a model to enhance the reliability of the national defense core technology R&D project evaluation system.

  • Purpose: In the case of mass disaster, the establishment of temporary medical facilities for the first aid and treatment is required for the stable accommodation of patients caused by the disaster. However, the criteria for decision making related to the deployment of field emergency medical facilities are not specified. So, The purpose of this study is to draw considerable factors needed for the deployment of field emergency medical facilities and to make proposal for site selection process of field emergency medical facilities on the basis of the factor. Methods: This study performs text mining of disaster-related laws, guidelines and documents to derive key factors affecting site selection, also proposes a decision making process and conducts virtual deployment to validate the process. Results: The key factors for the site selection derived as the size of the damage, the size of the DMAT inputs, the location of available place, and distance to the disaster base hospital. As a result of virtual deployment following proposed decision making process, It is confirmed that the site of field emergency medical facilities is changed depending on the type of disaster, even if the scope of the disaster damage was the same. Implications: The deployment of field emergency medical facilities requires a separate criteria for each type of disaster, not uniform, as a future research a quantitative approach of the criteria needs to be performed.

  • The effect of vertical vibration of a beam is significantly influenced by higher modes of vibration. Therefore, a beam can be modeled using several elements must De used to represent a vibrating beam. As a result, analysis of a space framed structure for vertical vibration requires increase number of elements leading to more complicated model with many degree of freedom which requires large amount of computing resources for dynamic analysis. An efficient analysis method for vertical vibration of space framed structures are proposed in this paper which is presented in three method. The first method is to determine minimum nodes that shall be used to obtain dynamic response with the vertical vibration. Secondly, matrix condensation methods are introduced to reduce the computation efforts used to perform dynamic analysis and the selection of primary degree-of-freedom is proposed. The third method is of using the mass participation factor for the selection of primary degree-of-freedom.

  • Large signal type data sets are difficult to classify, especially if the data sets are non-stationary. In this paper, large signal type and non-stationary data sets are wavelet transformed so that distinct features of the data are extracted in wavelet domain rather than time domain. For the classification of the data, a few wavelet coefficients representing class properties are employed for statistical classification methods : Linear Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Neural Network etc. The application of our wavelet-based feature selection method to a mass spectrometry data set for ovarian cancer diagnosis resulted in 100% classification accuracy.

  • Growth performances of the selected and the non-selected red sea bream (Pagrus major) lines were evaluated up to marketable size. The offspring were mass-produced either from the selected line (the fourth generation of broods from mass selection) or the non-selected line (the second generation of wild broods). Early (59 to 103 days old, trial I) and late growth performances (4 to 24 months old, trial II) were evaluated based on communal rearing in land-based tanks and sea cages, respectively. In trial I, the selected line exhibited significantly higher values in both weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) when compared to those observed in the non-selected line (P<0.05). In trial II comprising of three growth phases (4-9, 9-16 and 16-24 months old), selected line showed only slightly improved in WG and SGR at the beginning two growth phases (4-9 and 9-16 months old) (P>0.05), however, displayed significantly higher values at the last growth phase (16-24 months old) (P<0.05). Overall WG and SGR throughout the experiment (4-24 months) were also significantly higher in the selected line than the non-selected line (P<0.05). Consequently, mean body weight of the selected line at 24 months old was 1.4-fold (40.8{\%}\;increased) as compared to that of the non-selected line. This present result indicates that mass selection of this species against the growth traits might be quite effective, and the present advance has important Implication in the productivity enhancement of red sea bream aquaculture.

  • Current data on reproductive characters of endemic and native species are essential to provide a strategy for the conservation of these species. Red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. & Zucc.) is one of the dominant, native tree species in Korea, but its reproductive ecology is not well-known. In 1997, the pattern of variation in cone and seed yields contributing to the conservation of declining populations of red pines was examined. Plant height and dbh were measured, and several new cones were collected from each tagged tree after counting the number of cones on each tree. For a subset of cones sampled, the number of fertile scales, the number of seeds at three development stages (early/late aborted, and filled seed), seed wing size, wing color, and individual filled seed mass were measured. The three sites which differed significantly in mean plant size also differed in mean cone and seed production per plant. However further analyses showed that most variation in characters examined occurred among plants within sites, but not among sites. An average of 90% of the potential seeds on the cones aborted at an early developmental stage, demonstrating that early abortion is a major factor affecting the number of filled seeds per cone. Individual seed mass was the only character which exhibited significant variations among sites as well as among trees within sites. Individual seed mass was overall negatively correlated with both the percentage of late abortion and the number of old cones per plant, suggesting that both the past and current years' reproductive activities have caused variations in seed mass. The potential dispersal distance of red pine seeds is quite large. However, wing loading was correlated with seed mass and number in a complex pattern across the sites. Distribution of seeds with varied colored wings differed among sites and among trees within sites. These results suggest that red pines at different sites might possess different strategies to cope with selection pressures acting during the final phase of reproduction, from seed dispersal to establishment. Then the ‘fitted’ red pine trees at each site should be identified and managed to conserve or restore populations.
