  • In this study, the effects of Co content on the microstructure and Charpy impact properties of Fe-Cr-W ferritic/martensitic oxide dispersion strengthened (F/M ODS) steels are investigated. F/M ODS steels with 0-5 wt% Co are fabricated by mechanical alloying, followed by hot isostatic pressing, hot-rolling, and normalizing/tempering heat treatment. All the steels commonly exhibit two-phase microstructures consisting of ferrite and tempered martensite. The volume fraction of ferrite increases with the increase in the Co content, since the Co element considerably lowers the hardenability of the F/M ODS steel. Despite the lowest volume fraction of tempered martensite, the F/M ODS steel with 5 wt% Co shows the highest micro-Vickers hardness, owing to the solid solution-hardening effect of the alloyed Co. The high hardness of the steel improves the resistance to fracture initiation, thereby resulting in the enhanced fracture initiation energy in a Charpy impact test at - 40℃. Furthermore, the addition of Co suppresses the formation of coarse oxide inclusions in the F/M ODS steel, while simultaneously providing a high resistance to fracture propagation. Owing to these combined effects of Co, the Charpy impact energy of the F/M ODS steel increases gradually with the increase in the Co content.

  • The effects of Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) and Annealed Martensite (AM) heat treatment on the microstructure and tensile properties were investigated for 0.24C-0.5Si-1.5Mn-1Al steels. The Q&P steels were annealed at a single phase ($\gamma$) or a dual phase (${\gamma}+{\alpha}$), followed by quenching to a temperature between $M_s$ and $M_f$. Then, enriching carbon was conducted to stabilize the austenite through the partitioning, followed by water quenching. The AM steels were intercritically annealed at a dual phase (${\gamma}+{\alpha}$) temperature and austempered at $M_s$ and $M_s{\pm}50^{\circ}C$, followed by cooling in oil quenching. The dual phase Q&P steels showed lower tensile strength and yieldyield strength than those of the single phase Q&P steels, and tThe elongation for the dual phase Q&P steel was partitioning 100s higher than that of that for the single phase Q&P steels as the partitioning time was less than 100s up to partitioning 100s. For AM steels, the tensile/yield strength decreased and the total elongation increased as the austempering temperature increased. The stability of the retained austenite controlled the elongation for Q&P steels and the volume fraction of the retained austenite controlled the elongation for AM steels.

  • In this study, the correlation between microstructure and Charpy impact properties of FCAW(Flux cored arc welding) HAZ(Heat affected zone) of thick steel plates for offshore platforms was investigated. The 1/4 thickness(1/4t) location HAZ specimen had a higher volume fraction of bainite and finer grain size of acicular ferrite than those of the 1/2 thickness (1/2t) location HAZ specimen because of the post heat effect during the continuous FCAW process. The Charpy impact energy at $-20^{\circ}C$ of the 1/4t location HAZ specimen was lower than that of the 1/2t location HAZ specimen because of the high volume fraction of coarse bainite. The Charpy impact energy at -40 and $-60^{\circ}C$ of the 1/2t location HAZ specimen were higher than those of the 1/2t location HAZ specimen because the ductile fracture occurred in the fine acicular ferrite and martensite regions. In the ductile fracture mode, the deformed regions were observed in fine acicular ferrite and martensite regions. In the brittle fracture mode, long crack propagation path was observed in bainite regions.

  • The effect of sintering conditions on the austenite stability and strain-induced martensitic transformation of nanocrystalline FeCrC alloy is investigated. Nanocrystalline FeCrC alloys are successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering with an extremely short densification time to obtain the theoretical density value and prevent grain growth. The nanocrystallite size in the sintered alloys contributes to increased austenite stability. The phase fraction of the FeCrC sintered alloy before and after deformation according to the sintering holding time is measured using X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction analysis. During compressive deformation, the volume fraction of strain-induced martensite resulting from austenite decomposition is increased. The transformation kinetics of the strain-induced martensite is evaluated using an empirical equation considering the austenite stability factor. The hardness of the S0W and S10W samples increase to 62.4-67.5 and 58.9-63.4 HRC before and after deformation. The hardness results confirmed that the mechanical properties are improved owing to the effects of grain refinement and strain-induced martensitic transformation in the nanocrystalline FeCrC alloy.

  • The effects of tempering condition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 30MnB5 hot stamping steel were investigated in this study. Before the tempering, hot-stamped 30MnB5 steel was composed of only ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite microstructure without precipitates. After the tempering at $180^{\circ}C$ for 120 min, nano-sized ${\varepsilon}$-carbides were precipitated in the ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite laths. After tempering at $250^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, cementite was precipitated along the ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite lath boundaries. The cementite was also observed in the specimens tempered at $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and $450^{\circ}C$ for 6 min, respectively. The globular ${\alpha}$-ferrite appeared at $350^{\circ}C-30min$ tempering, and the volume fraction of ${\alpha}$-ferrite increased when the tempering temperature was increased. The yield strength increased after tempering, and it reached a peak with the tempering condition of $180^{\circ}C-120min$, due to the nano-sized precipitates in the ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite lath. After the tempering, the steel's ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was decreased due to the reduction in dislocation density and C segregation to lath boundaries. The highest elongation was observed at the $180^{\circ}C-120min$ tempering condition, due to the reduction of residual stress, and the lack of precipitates along the lath boundaries. The $180^{\circ}C-120min$ tempering condition was considered to have outstanding crash performance, according to toughness and anti-intrusion calculation results. In drop tower crash tests, the 30MnB5 door impact beam tempered at $180^{\circ}C$ for 120 min showed better crash performance compared to a 22MnB5 door impact beam.

  • This study deals with the microstructure and tensile properties of 600 and 700 MPa-grade high-strength seismic reinforced steel bars. High-strength seismic resistant reinforced steel bars (SD 600S and SD 700S) were fabricated by TempCore process, especially the SD 700S specimen was more rapid cooled than the SD 600S specimen during the TempCore process. Although two specimens had microstructure of tempered martensite in the surface region, the SD 600S specimen had ferrite-degenerated pearlite in the center region, whereas the SD 700S specimen had bainite-ferrite-degenerated pearlite in the center region. Therefore, their hardness was highest in the surface region and revealed a tendency to decrease from the surface region to the center region because tempered martensite has higher hardness than ferrite-degenerated pearlite or bainite. The SD 700S specimen revealed higher hardness in the center region than SD 600S specimen because it contained a larger amount of bainite as well as ferrite-degenerated pearlite. On the other hand, tensile test results indicated the SD 600S and SD 700S specimens revealed continuous yielding behavior because of formation of degenerated pearlite or bainite in the center region. The SD 600S specimen had a little higher tensile-to-yield ratio because the presence of ferrite and degenerated pearlite in the center region and the lower fraction of tempered martensite enhance work hardening.

  • In this study, the effects of C and Si on damping capacity and mechanical properties of as-cast and as-rolled Fe-17%Mn alloys were investigated as a basic study for the purpose of the commercialization of the alloy. The $M_s$ temperature of ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ martensitic transformation in Fe-17%Mn alloy was decreased with increasing C and Si contents, resulting in the less volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite. The damping capacity was also decreased with increasing alloying content because of less ${\varepsilon}$ amount and the reduction in mobility of the damping sources such as the stacking fault boundaries and ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ interfaces due to the pinning effect by alloying elements. The mechanical properties of as-rolled alloys were superior to those of as-cast alloys probably because of finer ${\gamma}$ grains, larger amount of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, and chemical homogeneity.

  • Austenite(${\gamma}$) grain size, ${\varepsilon}$ martensite volume fraction and damping capacity of Fe-17%Mn alloy have been investigated as a function of solution treatment temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$. With increasing the solution temperature, ${\gamma}$ grain size, ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content and damping capacity are increased, while the hardness is decreased. When ${\gamma}$ grains are small, ${\varepsilon}$ plates grow in only one direction in each ${\gamma}$ grain. However, if the ${\gamma}$ grains are large in accordance with high solution treating temperature, several ${\varepsilon}$ variants with different orientations are formed and intersected each other in each ${\gamma}$ grain. In spite of small ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content, the damping capacity of the specimen which was annealed at $700^{\circ}C$, followed by subzero treatment at $-196^{\circ}C$, is almost equal to that of the specimen annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ and subsequently quenched to room temperature. From this result it is suggested that the damping capacity of Fe-17%Mn alloy having fine ${\gamma}$ grains is mainly attributed to the movement of ${\gamma}/{\varepsilon}$ interface without the operation of other damping sources such as ${\varepsilon}/{\varepsilon}$ boundaries and stacking faults in ${\varepsilon}$ reported previously.
