  • In order to evaluate the modified installation methods of roof ventilation devices, derived from the previous experiment ('investigation into the optimum capacity of roof ventilation devices and their deployment'), the conventional and modified (improved) roof ventilation systems were installed in the single-span plastic greenhouse for growing oriental melons. The roof vents ($60{\varphi}$) and roof fans (maximum air capacity of $38m^3/min$) were installed in the spacing of 15m (FT, modified 'side vent+roof fan' ventilation) and 6m (TT, modified 'side vent+roof vent' ventilation) respectively on the roof of greenhouses for the modified roof ventilation treatments, and 20m (FC, conventional 'side vent+roof fan' ventilation) and 8m (TC, conventional 'side vent+roof vent' ventilation) for the conventional ones. The stem diameter, leaf blade lengh, petiole length, and leaf width were lower in the FT and TT treatments than those in the conventional treatments, FC and TC. Although the fruit weight and total yields were slightly lower in the FT and TT treatments, the marketable fruit ratio (%) were higher, as a result of increased fruiting ratio (%) in these treatments, than those of FC and TC. The marketable yields (kg/10a) in the FT and TT treatments were 8,391 kg/10a and 7,283 kg/10a, which were respectively 661 kg/10a and 487 kg/10a higher than those in the treatments of FC and TC. The modified installation methods of roof fan resulted in production of more female flowers and lower fruit drop ratio (%) compared to conventional meathods. In the treatment of the conventional ventilation with roof vent, the fruit weight, fruit length & width, and flesh thickness were higher than in other treatments, but there were no significant differences in the fruit width and flesh thickness among the treatments.

  • In order to prepare the technical fundamental in production of premium quality fruits of 'Niitaka' pears, we compared the quality parameters and storability of the fruits that had various fruit set position in a cluster. The fruits set on $4^{th}$ from basal part in fruit cluster had the largest fruit size. The weight of fruits set on the higher position than $4^{th}$ from basal part in fruit cluster showed decreasing tendency. The production rates of marketable fruits which had 500g to 899g in weight were the high in $3-5^{th}$ from basal part in cluster than those in other position. The differences of fruit height and diameter which represent balanced fruit shape also showed less difference in the fruits set on $4-5^{th}$ from basal part in cluster than the fruits set closely on basal part in cluster. The fruits set on $3-4^{th}$ from basal part in cluster showed lower rate in incidence of core breakdown and pithiness disorder during 4 months of cold storage than those on the closer position to basal part in cluster.

  • Fruit quality is essential for increasing marketability and consumer acceptance. To suggest an easy method for measurement of squash fruit quality, 10 varieties/cultivars and 1 populations were used as experimental materials. The fruits were harvested in marketable maturity to investigate the relation between quality factors and sensory test. The total solids content is one of the most important factors associated with sensory taste in fruits. The major squash varieties/cultivars such as 'Puthobag', 'Seoulmadi', 'Aehobag 1', 'Aehobag 2', 'Ford Zucchini', and 'Zucchini' showed total solids content of 6.4, 7.5, 7.3, 5.8, 4.7, and 4.30%, respectively. The preference values for 'Puthobag', 'Seoulmadi', 'Aehobag 1', and 'Aehobag 2', which are generally preferable varieties/cultivars, were 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, and 4.3, respectively. On the other hand, the preference values for variety 'Ford Zucchini' and cultivar 'Zucchni', which are not generally preferable, were 1.6 and 1.4, respectively. There was no significant correlation between plant length and total solids content or starch content in the fruits thereby suggesting the possibility of breeding bush type squash cultivars with good taste. This easy method of weighing dry matters of squash fruits might be useful for marketable quality index.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soil amendment with different characteristics on plant growth, fruit yield and quality of oriental melon for continuous cropping under protected cultivation. Humus layers in arable soil was disturbed because soil amendment from hillside to oriental melon field was continued to resolve problems for continuous cropping. Water potential and hardness of soil was decreased in sandy loam with lower clay contents compared with loam and silty clay. Leaf length and area, fresh and dry weight of plant at earlier growing stage were higher, but chlorophyll contents of leaves were dropped in sandy loam compared with silty clay soil. Fruit size and weight was higher in sandy loam, but soluble solid and color of fruit were increased in silty clay. Marketable and unmarketable yield and quantity of fermented fruit were the highest in sandy loam. Hardness and weight of fruit were decreased by longer storage period and soluble solids of fruit was peaked at 5 day after storage, but decreased by prolonged continued storage. Because of these results, soil characteristics of amendment to oriental melon field should be considered as an important factor for quality and yield of oriental melon.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of transplanting methods on the growth and yield of paprika (Capsicumannuum L. 'Veyron' and 'Coletti') in coir culture during two seasons. The summer type sowed in late winter and harvested from summer and the winter type sowed in summer and harvested from early winter. Control plants grown on the 10cm rockwool block were transplanted on coir slab when the 8 leaves of seedlings were emerged, while plants of the young seedling transplanting(YST) grown on the 7cm rockwool block was put on the slab at time of 2-3 leaves developed. Plants of the temporary transplanting(TT) on the 10cm rockwool block were moved on the slab after 2-3 weeks underpinning cultivation, while plants of the blockless transplanting(BT) were directly transplanted in the slab when the seedlings have 2-3 leaves emerged. The plant height of the control and BT treatment were longer while that of TT showed the shortest among treatments. The bigger leaf size was observed in the YST and BT treatment. Leaf number of the BT treatment was increased, while that of TT was the lowest. There were no differences in fruit size, locules and thickness among treatments. The lower fruit weight was observed in the TT of the winter culture and fruits in the control and YST of the summer culture showed higher fruit weight. The percentage of marketable fruit appeared to be slightly higher in the winter culture than in the summer culture. There were no differences in marketable fruit rate among the treatments of the winter culture but, among the summer culture, the highest marketable fruit rate was observed in the BT with 93%. The yield of the YST and BT was higher and that of the TT was the lowest.

  • This experiment was conducted to establish the optimum nitrogen application level for oriental melon at Seong-ju Fruit Vegetable Experiment Station with a fertigation system. Four different levels of nitrogen fertigation were applied to oriental melon and growth of the plant was analyzed. Plant samples were collected 8 times and were analyzed by the standard methods. The first fertigation was applied at 10 days after transplanting for the oriental melon based on the growth rates of the plants. For oriental melon, 10 day interval fertigation and 8 time split application of fertilizer could be recommended. The amounts of N, P, and K fertilizer recommended by soil testing was 249-408-315 (kg $ha^{-1}$). Treatment levels were 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 times of soil testing nitrogen with P and K level fixed. The total nitrogen (T-N) content in dried leaf showed a tendency to increase until 30 days after transplanting, then decreased. T-N content increased with increasing nitrogen fertigation rates. T-N content in dried fruit decreased slightly during the whole growing season. Fresh weight and nitrogen uptake were increased with increasing nitrogen fertigation rates. Total yield and marketable yield, 44,550 kg $ha^{-1}$ and 42,880 kg $ha^{-1}$, were maximized at 0.5 times of soil test nitrogen. Ratio of marketable fruit, 95%, was the highest at 0.5 times of soil test nitrogen. The optimum level of nitrogen for fertigation system was 0.5 times soil test nitrogen judging from total yield, commodity yield and commodity fruit.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of temperature variation by the different ventilation methods on the growth and quality of oriental melon in greenhouse of tunnel type 1. The dropping effect in temperature by ventilation types was best at type 3 and those of type 2, type 1 were in order. 2. The temperature distribution in type 3 was uniformed as air- inflow and air- outflow by wind ventilation were easier than others. Whereas the temperature of type 1 having lateral ventilation hole and type 2 having the zenith ventilation tube and lateral ventilation hole was ascended, because small ventilation area of ventilation tube and hole could not make the gravity and wind ventilation successfully. 3. When compared with air amount of three types ventilated by the temperature difference of outside and inside of tunnel type house, that of type 3 was more than those of type 1 and type 2. 4. Type 3 was better than type 2 and type 1 in lear numbers, leaf area, fruit weight, flesh thickness, malformed fruit rate, and marketable fruit rate. 5. Marketable fruit rate of all treatment at each harvesting stages was rised, as goes to the latter periods.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation levels during winter season on the yield and soluble solid contents of fruits. To achieve this strawberry 'Seolhyang' cultivated forcingly in the year of 2013 to 2014 as well as 2014 to 2015. The three treatments include periodical removing of leaves remaining 6 fully expanded leaves, those remaining 9 leaves, and only removing of old and infected leaves during the period from early December to end of February. In the early marketable fruit yield until the end of February and total marketable fruit yield, the treatment of non-defoliation was significantly higher than those of the treatment of 6 and 9 leaves in the year of 2014 to 2015 cropping season. Soluble solid contents of fruits among January and March increased significantly as the number of leaves get higher. Soluble solid contents were higher and stable around $12^{\circ}Brix$ in the treatment of non-defoliation. Assimilation of photosynthetic products into plant tissue are insufficient due to the lack of irradiation and short day in winter season forcing cultivation of strawberry. Thus, it is considered to manage the leaves with defoliation for only old and infected leaves from December to February for increasing of fruit yield and improvement of fruit quality.

  • This study aimed to examine cucumber (Cucumis sativus) varieties adaptive to the desert climate by comparing and analyzing the growth, yield, and water consumption. Two long-sized cucumber varieties, 'Gulfstream' and 'Imea' and two medium-sized cucumbers, 'Nagene' and 'Sausan' were cultivated in coir substrate hydroponics under hot and humid greenhouse conditions from March 2 to June 20, 2020. On the 113 DAT, 'Nagene' had the longest plant height and the highest internode number. The marketable fruit number per plant was higher in the medium-sized varieties, which had more internode number. The marketable fruit number was 31.3 for 'Gulfstream', 30.7 for 'Imea', 57.8 for 'Nagene', or 56.0 for 'Sausan' with no significant difference in total fruit weights per plant. The water consumption required to produce 200 g of fruit was lower in the 'Nagene' (2.39 L) with the highest water use efficiency (WUE). Therefore, 'Nagene' variety may have higher adaptability to desert high temperature compared to the long-sized varieties, and it is going to be necessary to verify more medium-sized cucumber varieties.
