  • In this paper we propose an efficient marker tracking system that exploits IR and web cameras. The proposed method solves the marker swap problem and allows for fast and responsive marker tracking. We use color information gathered from the IR reflector to assign a unique identification to each marker. We can locate each marker withthe IR camera and also identify the marker uniquely by using color information provided by the web camera. The experiment results show that marker swapping can be eliminated effectively. Furthermore, our approach allows for faster and more responsive marker tracking.

  • This paper presents a novel approach to control the augmented reality (AR) objects robustly in a marker-less AR system by fingertip tracking and hand pattern recognition. It is known that one of the promising ways to develop a marker-less AR system is using human's body such as hand or face for replacing traditional fiducial markers. This paper introduces a real-time method to manipulate the overlaid virtual objects dynamically in a marker-less AR system using both hands with a single camera. The left bare hand is considered as a virtual marker in the marker-less AR system and the right hand is used as a hand mouse. To build the marker-less system, we utilize a skin-color model for hand shape detection and curvature-based fingertip detection from an input video image. Using the detected fingertips the camera pose are estimated to overlay virtual objects on the hand coordinate system. In order to manipulate the virtual objects rendered on the marker-less AR system dynamically, a vision-based hand control interface, which exploits the fingertip tracking for the movement of the objects and pattern matching for the hand command initiation, is developed. From the experiments, we can prove that the proposed and developed system can control the objects dynamically in a convenient fashion.

  • In respiratory-induced proton therapy, the accuracy of tracking system and beam controlling is more important than photon therapy. Therefore, a high accuracy motion tracking system that can track internal marker and external surrogate is needed. In this research, our team has installed internal and external marker tracking system at our institution's proton therapy system, and tested the scanning with gating according to the position of marker. The results demonstrate that the developed in-house external/internal marker based gating system can be clinically used for proton therapy system for moving tumor treatment.

  • This paper presents an automatic target tracking flight system using a PID controller based on velocity command of a multirotor UAV. The automatic flight system includes marker based onboard target detection and an automatic velocity command generation replacing manual controller. A quad-rotor UAV is equipped with a camera and an image processing computer to detect the marker in real time and to estimate the relative distance from the target. The marker tracking system consists of PID controller and generates velocity command based on the relative distance. The generated velocity command is used as the input of the UAV's original flight controller. The operation of the proposed system was verified through actual flight tests using a marker on top of a moving vehicle and tracks it to successfully demonstrate its capability using a quad-rotor UAV.

  • This paper proposes tip position control system which uses a visual marker to determine the tip position of a robot manipulator. The main idea of this paper is to introduce visual marker for the tracking control of a robot manipulator. Existing researches utilize stationary markers to get pattern information from them. Unlike existing researches, we introduce visual markers to get the coordinates of them in addition to their pattern information. Markers need not be stationary and the extracted coordinate of markers are used as a reference trajectory for the tracking control of a robot manipulator. To build the proposed control scheme, we first obtain intrinsic parameters through camera calibration and evaluate their validity. Secondly, we present a procedure to obtain the relative coordinate of a visual marker with respect to a camera. Thirdly, we derive the equation for the kinematics of the SCORBOTER 4pc manipulator which we use for control of manipulator. Also, we provide a flow diagram of entire visual marker tracking system. The feasibility of the proposed scheme will be demonstrated through real experiments.

  • Lane detection is a key function in developing autonomous vehicle technology. In this paper, we propose a lane marker detection algorithm robust to environmental variation targeting low cost embedded computing devices. The proposed algorithm consists of two phases: initialization phase which is slow but has relatively higher accuracy; and the tracking phase which is fast and has the reliable performance in a limited condition. The initialization phase detects lane markers using a set of filters utilizing the various features of lane markers. The tracking phase uses Kalman filter to accelerate the lane marker detection processing. In a tracking phase, we measure the reliability of the detection results and switch it to initialization phase if the confidence level becomes below a threshold. By combining the initialization and tracking phases we achieved high accuracy and acceptable computing speed even under a low cost computing resources in which we cannot use the computing intensive algorithm such as deep learning approach. Experimental results show that the detection accuracy is about 95% on average and the processing speed is about 20 frames per second with Raspberry Pi 3 which is low cost device.

  • In this paper, we propose Simple Frame Marker(SFMarker) to support recognition of characters and images included in a marker in augmented reality. If characters are inserted inside of marker and are recognised using Optical Character Recognition(OCR), it doesn't need marker learning process before an execution. It also reduces visual disturbance compared to 2D barcode marker due to familarity of characters. Therefore, proposed SFMarker distinguishes Square SFMarker that embeds images from Rectangle SFMarker with characters according to ratio of marker and applies different recognition algorithms. Also, in order to reduce preprocessing of character recognition, SFMarker inserts direction information in border of marker and extracts it to execute character recognition fast and correctly. Finally, since the character recognition for every frame slows down tracking speed, we increase the speed of recognition process using the result of character recognition in previous frame when frame difference is low.

  • Augmented reality (AR) is augmented virtual information on the real world with real-time. And user can interact with information. In this paper, Marker-less tracking algorithm has been studied, for implement the augmented reality system on a mobile environment. In marker-less augmented reality, users do not need to attach the markers, and constrained the location. So, it's convenient to use. For marker-less tracking, I use the SURF algorithm based on feature point extraction in this paper. The SURF algorithm can be used on mobile devices because of the computational complexity is low. However, the SURF algorithm optimization work is not suitable for mobile devices. Therefore, in this paper, in order to the suitable tracking in mobile devices, the SURF algorithm was tested in a variety of environments. And ways to optimize has been studied.

  • This paper presents a marker image evaluation method based on analysis of object distribution in images and classification of images with repetitive patterns for effective marker-based augmented reality (AR) system development. We measure the variance of feature point coordinates to distinguish marker images that are vulnerable to occlusion, since object distribution affects object tracking performance according to partial occlusion in the images. Moreover, we propose a method to classify images suitable for object recognition and tracking based on the fact that the distributions of descriptor vectors among general images and repetitive-pattern images are significantly different. Comprehensive experiments for marker images confirm that the proposed marker image evaluation method distinguishes images vulnerable to occlusion and repetitive-pattern images very well. Furthermore, we suggest that scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) is superior to speeded up robust features (SURF) in terms of object tracking in marker images. The proposed method provides users with suitability information for various images, and it helps AR systems to be realized more effectively.

  • Effective and efficient estimation of camera poses is a core method in implementing augmented reality systems or applications. The most common one is using markers, e.g., ARToolkit. However, use of markers suffers from a notorious problem that is vulnerable to occlusion. To overcome this, this paper proposes a top-down method that iteratively estimates the current camera pose by using particle swarm optimization. Through experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method enables to implement augmented reality on severely-occluded markers.
