  • Understanding a ship's present position has been one of the most important tasks during a ship's voyage, in both ancient and modern times. Particularly, a ship's dead reckoning (DR) has been used for predicting traffic situations and collision avoidance actions. However, the current system that uses the traditional method of calculating DR employs the received position and speed data only. Therefore, it is not applicable for predicting navigation within the harbor limits, owing to the frequent changes in the ship's course and speed in this region. In this study, planned routes were applied for improving the reliability of the proposed system and predicting the traffic patterns in advance. The proposed method of determining the dead reckoning position (DRP) uses not only the ships' received data but also the navigational patterns and tracking data in harbor limits. The Mercator sailing formulas were used for calculating the ships' DRPs and planned routes. The data on the traffic patterns were collected from the automatic identification system and analyzed using MATLAB. Two randomly chosen ships were analyzed for simulating their tracks and comparing the DR method during the timeframes of the ships' movement. The proposed method of calculating DR, combined with the information on planned routes and DRPs, is expected to contribute towards improving the decision-making abilities of operators.

  • Recently, various marine development initiatives, including offshore wind farms and marina port facilities, have been launched to enhance utilization of coastal waters. In addition, advancements in technologies for autonomous ships and wing-in-ground effect craft are progressing swiftly, increasing the complexity of maritime traffic. Accordingly, proactive policy development and research are needed to ensure safe navigation and decrease maritime accidents. The dynamic interplay between vessel traffic and geographical features in coastal waters necessitates spatio-temporal analysis. Factors such as currents, waves, and fog, along with vessel traffic services, play pivotal roles in managing maritime traffic. In this study, AIS data were used to quantitatively evaluate the distribution and utilization of maritime traffic in coastal waters using a grid cell approach. Furthermore, a suitability model for maritime traffic routes was developed, taking into account spatio-temporal operational and environmental characteristics. Results were compared to existing national maritime traffic route and offshore wind farm plans, providing valuable insights for the development of future maritime traffic networks.

  • This study examined challenges posed by two ferry routes, namely, Likoni and Mtongwe crossings, in the Mombasa Channel and their impact on navigational safety. Utilizing the Environmental Stress (ES) model, this study analyzed current ship traffic and assessed stress levels imposed by ferry crossing traffic on navigators. ES values revealed significant stress at these ferry crossings attributed to varying transit speeds. Standardizing transit speeds at two ferry passages can reduce high stress levels, presenting a viable solution. Furthermore, the IWRAP Mk2 simulation underscores crossing collisions as a significant concern, particularly at Likoni and Mtongwe crossings, due to increased ferry traffic. This research offers valuable insights for stakeholders, such as the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), to develop targeted safety measures and enhance the flow of ship traffic in the channel.

  • Despite the development of safety measures and improvements in preventive systems technologies, maritime traffic accidents that involve ships carrying hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) continuously occur owing to increased amount of HNS goods transported and the growing number of HNS fleet. To prevent maritime traffic accidents involving ships carrying HNS, this study proposes an intuitive route risk assessment technique using risk contours that can be visually and quantitatively analyzed. The proposed technique offers continuous information based on quantified values. It determines and structures route risk factors classified as absolute danger, absolute factors, and influential factors within the assessment area. The route risk is assessed in accordance with the proposed algorithmic procedures by means of contour maps overlaid on electronic charts for visualization. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed route risk assessment technique, experimental case studies under various conditions were conducted to compare results obtained by the proposed technique to actual route plans used by five representative companies operating the model ship carrying HNS. This technique is beneficial not only for assessing the route risk of ships carrying HNS, but also for identifying better route options such as recommended routes and enhancing navigation safety. Furthermore, this technique can be used to develop optimized route plans for current maritime conditions in addition to future autonomous navigation application.

  • The recent increase in size and speed of ships resulted in the existing maritime routes becoming narrow relative to the size of new ships. At the same time, as the improvement and optimization in marine transportation take place and the construction of structures in seas and harbor improvements pick up speed, there is an increasing probability of marine accidents. Due to these environmental changes, the need to professionally analyze the effect of marine structures on navigation arose to ensure safety of ships and a law was enacted and introduced for the Maritime Traffic Safety Audit (MTSA). In this study, a Qualitative assessment for verifying the effectiveness of MTSA was carried out with case analysis and analysis model in other similar audit scheme. It is expected that an analyzed result for effectiveness of MTSA will be a steppingstone for enhancing the MTSA and keeping maritime traffic safety as its own purpose.
