  • In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of TiN-Zr membrane manufacturing process. The software of MLCA was Gabi. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process. Transition metal nitrides have been researched extensively because of their properties. Among these, TiN has the most attention. TiN is a ceramic materials which possess the good combination of physical and chemical properties, such as high melting point, high hardness, and relatively low specific gravity, high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance. With these properties, TiN plays an important role in functional materials for application in separation hydrogen from fossil fuel. Precursor TiN was synthesized by sol-gel method and zirconium was coated by ball mill method. The metallurgical, physical and thermodynamic characteristics of the membranes were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermo Gravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) and Gas Chromatograph System (GP). As a result of characterization and normalization, environmental impacts were 94% in MAETP (Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% FAETP (Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% HTP (Human Toxicity Potential). TiN fabrication process appears to have a direct or indirect impact on the human body. It is believed that the greatest impact that HTP can have on human is the carcinogenic properties. This shows that electricity use has a great influence on ecosystem impact. TiN-Zr was analyzed in Eco-Indicator '99 (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology.

  • To investigate the possible use of probiont in fish farming industry, a bacterium with inhibitory effect against Vibrio anguillarum was isolated from gastrointestinal tract of the marine fish of yellow tail. It was identified to be Bacillus amyloliquefaciens H41 based on biochemical and physiological characterization. The optimal growth conditions of the isolated strain were 1% peptone, 1.5% yeast extract, 1% sucrose, 0.5% NaCl, 0.05% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_20$, pH 7.0-8.0, and 20 hr of incubation between $28-35^{\circ}C$ under aeration. The culture supernatant of the isolated strain showed inhibition activity against V. anguillarum. Inhibition activity was cleared by forming a clear zone by a paper-disk method. The maximal production of growth inhibition factor was induced by cultivation under 1% peptone, 1.5% yeast extract, 1% sucrose, 1% NaCl, 0.05% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_20$, pH 7.5 and at $35^{\circ}C$. The highest growth inhibition factor production was observed after 16-24 hr cultivation under aeration. The culture supernatant of the isolated strain showed inhibition activity whereas no inhibition activity was shown from the standard B. amyloliquefaciens KCTC 1724 strain. The growth inhibition affected only against V. anguillarum among other pathogenic Vibrios tested here.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine the 'Discussion of maritime defense' which began to be discussed from the late Goryeo dynasty to the early Joseon dynasty and the process of establishing a maritime defense system. Also it can identify changes in the aspects of the naval ship operation and their strategic tactics during the reign of King Sejong. Japanese raiders began a full-scale invasion from 1350 at the late Goryeo Dynasty, So the government realized the need to raise the 'Sea power' and to organize the maritime defense system for defending enemy invasion. for example, the reinforcement of naval forces, construction of warships, develoment of weapon systems and so on. which have achieved remarkable growth while continuing, have also been used to carry out a three-time 'Conquest of Daemado' in 1389, 1396, 1419. Until then, however, it is difficult to interpret that the naval forces had a systematic and organizational combat operation system. According to fighting patterns on combat reports before the early days of King Sejong's reign, Our naval forces had no advantage over the Japanese raiders in terms of their capabilities and tactics. Then, the period of King Sejong marked a watershed in maritime defense history. Based on accumulated experience of naval battles and force Projections, The paradigm shift of the naval strategic tactics for maritime defense has occurred. First, the capability of the naval vessels has improved. for example, ship speed, durability, and weather resistance. Through these efforts, navy forces were able to pursue and attack, destroy enemy's ships by taking advantage of the 'Ship speed superiority'. This has led to tactical shifts from defensive to offensive. Second, purpose to support offensive tactics, the government put a strategic plan into practice that is the forward depolyment of naval bases from the inland to the coast, considering the 'sea environment' and 'threat'. By doing so, Joseon dynasty was able to secure 'the command of the sea'. This may be a little different from the perception of the so-called 'peace period' that King Sejong's era. We need to remember that Joseon dynasty was working hard for its defense. When studying history of maritime defense, these strategic and tactical elements must be fully considered. Only then we can have a coherent understanding of the many naval battles in the past, including the Imjin War(1592-1598).

  • This study aims to evaluate the mechanical-chemical stability of used coal ash blocks, for improving fishing grounds. The surface of weathered ash blocks in seawater showed a decrease in the Ca and an increase in the Mg contents, compared to that of fresh blocks. This result reflects the substitution of Ca by Mg in seawater. The compressive strengths of ash blocks submerged into seawater during 12 months ranged from 235.23 to $447.43\;kgf/cm^2$; this is higher than the standard strength of wave-absorbing blocks($180\;kgf/cm^2)$ that are used for harbor construction. In addition, the compressive strength of ash blocks tends to increase with increasing installation time in seawater. The result of leaching experiments on coal ash blocks by Korean Standard Leaching Test(KSLT) method showed that leached concentrations of most metals except Cr(that leached up to 50 ppb, approaching standard concentration) do not exceed the seawater quality standards. A long-term(112 days) heavy metal leaching test to analyze seawater without mixing-dilution also showed that the concentrations of leached heavy metals, except for Cu, under anaerobic conditions do not exceed the seawater quality standards. Accordingly, the use of coal ash blocks in marine environments appears to be safe from chemical and mechanical factors that decrease the efficiency of concrete. Also, leaching concentration of Cu seems to be stable by decrease of leaching concentration due to dilution of seawater.

  • The Benangkimi wetland, which serves as a stopover place for migratory birds in the Dadohae Marine National Park in Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, is a place where various species and a large number of migratory birds are observed. In order to provide an effective and scientific management plan for the habitat environment of migratory birds, we carried out field survey of Benangkimi wetland. The field survey and survey on habitat use of migratory birds were conducted in parallel to obtain the basic data of hydraulics and hydrology. The hydraulic and hydrological survey of Benangkimi wetland was conducted 1-2 times a year during the period of 2015-2016 (two years). It was classified into 4 sectors according to the topography and geology, rainfall, hydraulic characteristics, and wetland conditions. The 3 sectors same as the migratory birds survey sector and the 1 sector as the inflow of the wetland were analyzed. The survey also focused on small migratory birds arriving at Benangkimi wetland during the spring and autumn season. As a result of investigating the population and species in each section, the habitat environment was different according to the water depth, sediment thickness and salinity. Migratory birds prefer hydraulic and hydrological characteristics. This study will be used for the scientific management of Benangkimi wetland, which serves as a stopping point for migratory birds, and it will contribute to basic data of ecology - hydraulics by examining the relationship between habitat environment and hydrological data.

  • In this paper we executed a SBL(Short Baseline) underwater acoustic positioning system that is a kind of underwater position estimation system to estimates the 3-dimensional position of ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) using hydrophones and DAQ(Data Acquisition) system in the basin which dimensions are $3{\times}3{\times}1.7(m)$. For this experiment, we let 4 hydrophones in different positions of the basin for receiver and 1 hydrophone is fixed on the underwater vehicle for transmitting sensor(pinger). These five hydrophones are communicated with each other to find the 3-D positions of the moving ROV in the basin. The measured signals are collected by DAQ system and the positions of the ROV are plotted by LabView program in real-time. To estimate the position of the ROV we used a trigonometric method. In X and Y plane the estimated data has a small errors but in Z plane the estimated data has large errors so we cannot use this data for position control. One solution of this problem is using depth sensor that implemented of the underwater vehicle. Hereafter, we will test in the ocean using designed SBL system.

  • Carbon dioxide was designated as one of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Among various ways to solve the $CO_2$ emission issue, the 3rd-generation biomass (algae) production is considered as a viable method to reduce $CO_2$ in the atmosphere. In this research, we propose a design of an innovative sustainable production system by utilizing the 3rd generation biomass in the environment of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO). Existing biomass production systems depend on the solar energy and they cannot continue producing biomass at night. Electricity produced from offshore wind farms also need an efficient way to store the energy through energy storage system (ESS) or deliver it real-time through power grid, both requiring heavy investment of capital. Thus, we design an offshore grid structure harnessing LED lights to supply the necessary light energy, by using the electricity produced from the wind farm, resulting in the maximized production of biomass and efficient use of wind farm energy. The final design integrates the biomass production system enhanced by LED lights with a wind power generation. The suggested NLP model for the optimal design, implemented in GAMS, would be useful for designing improved offshore biomass production systems combined with the wind farm.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the bioactivity and antioxidant activity of seed from Gardenia jasminoides Ellis fructus (GJE). We determined tannin content ($1.517{\pm}0.003mg\;CE/g$, mg of catechin equivalents). The extraction yields of the GJE seed solvent were distilled water (DW) 36.61%, 70% methanol 30.10% and ethyl acetate (EA) 20.40%. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were significantly increased (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mg/mL). Flavonoid contents (mg QE/g, mg of quercetin equivalents) were observed in the order of 70% methanol (0.799), DW (0.565) and EA (0.117). Antioxidant activities (DPPH, OH, ferrous ion-chelating capacity) were similar to the flavonoid content of each solvent. But ABTS scavenging activity and SOD like ability of DW extract were higher than 70% methanol extract. Comparing the yield and the antioxidant activity of each solvent of GJE seed, it seems to be preferable to use DW and 70% methanol solvent for extraction. As a result of this experiment, it has high antioxidant activity and physiological activity, which is expected to be highly valuable as a functional food and a natural antioxidant.

  • Recently crosshole seismic tomography has come to be widely used especially for the civil engineering, because it can provide more detail information than any other surface method, although the resolution of tomogram will be inevitably deteriorated to some extent due to the limited wavefield aperture on the nonuniqueness of traveltime inversion. In addition, our field sites often consist of a high-velocity bed rock overlain by low-velocity rock, sometimes with a contrast of more than 45 percent, and furthermore the bed rock is folded. The first arriving waves can be then the refracted ones that travel along the bed rock surface for some source/receiver distances. Thus, the desirable first arrivals can be easily misread that cause severe distortion of the resulting tomogram, if it is concerned with (straight ray) traveltime inversion procedure. In this case, comparision with synthetic data (forward modeling) is a valuable tool in the interpretation process. Besides, abundant information is contained in the crosshole data. For instance, examination of tube waves can be devoted to detecting discontinuities within the borehole such as breakouts, faults, fractures or shear zones as well as the end of the borehole. Specific frequency characteristics of marine silty mud will help discriminate from other soft rocks. The aim of this paper is to present several strategies to analyze and interpret the crosshole data in order to improve the ability at first to determine the spatial dimensions of interwell anomalies and furthermore to understand the underground structures. To this end, our field data are demonstrated. Possibility of misreading the first arrivals was illustrated. Tube waves were investigated in conjunction with the televiewer images. Use of shot- and receiver gathers was examined to benefit the detectabilities of discontinuities within the borehole.
