Tidal and Nontidal Fluctuations of Currents in the Western Channel of the Korea Strait

  • We carried out simultaneous and long-time observations of currents across the western channel of the Korea Strait during the period of May, 1994 to September, 1996 in order to understand the spatial and temporal variability of tidal and nontidal currents in the Strait. Results show that currents in the Strait are quite variable in space and time, and they largely consist of mean current and diurnal and semidiurnal tidal currents of about equal magnitudes. The mean currents include the Tsushima Current and the Korea Strait Undercurrent at the center of the channel. The former occupies the upper two-thirds and the latter the lower one-third of the water column. The semidiurnal and diurnal currents are largely rectilinear in the direction of NE-SW and their amplitude variation across the channel appears to be small. However, the diurnal currents at some locations show rotational characteristics with significant nontidal effects. The station close to the Korean coast leads the phase and the phase difference of the semidiurnal current across the channel appears to be less than half an hour while that of the diurnal current is over five hours.

Multi-floor Layout Model for Topsides of Floating Offshore Plant using the Optimization Technique (최적화 기법을 이용한 부유식 해양 플랜트 상부 구조의 다층 배치 모델)

  • For a floating offshore plant such as FPSO(Floating, Production, Storage, and Off-loading unit), various equipment should be installed in the restricted space, as compared with an onshore plant. The requirement for an optimal layout method of the plant has been increased in these days. Thus, a layout method of the floating offshore plant was proposed in this study. For this, an optimization problem for layout design was mathematically formulated, and then an optimization algorithm based on the genetic algorithm was implemented with C++ language in order to solve it. Finally, the proposed method was applied to an example of FPSO topsides. As a result, it was shown that the proposed method can be applied to layout design of the floating offshore plant such as FPSO.

  • An automatic pipe routing system is proposed and implemented. Generally, the pipe routing design as a part of the shipbuilding process requires a considerable number of man hours due to the complexity which comes from physical and operational constraints and the crucial influence on outfitting construction productivity. Therefore, the automation of pipe routing design operations and processes has always been one of the most important goals for improvements in shipbuilding design. The proposed system is applied to a pipe routing design in the engine room space of a commercial ship. The effectiveness of this system is verified as a reasonable form of support for pipe routing design jobs. The automatic routing result of this system can serve as a good basis model in the initial stages of pipe routing design, allowing the designer to reduce their design lead time significantly. As a result, the design productivity overall can be improved with this automatic pipe routing system.

First Record of the Goby, Suruga fundicola (Perciformes: Gobiidae) from Tongyeong, Korea (한국산 망둑어과 어류 1미기록종, Suruga fundicola)

  • Fifteen gobids specimens first collected from the southern coastal waters of Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, were identified as the Suruga fundicola from Korea. The species, representing a new Korean record, is characterized by having VII-I, 16~17 dorsal fin rays, I, 15~16 anal fin rays, 37~42 lateral line scales, notably large eye and narrow interorbital space, scaleless cheek and opercle, no babel, teeth rather strong, and 6~7 dusky spots on sides. A new Korean name, "Keun-nun-mangduk-sok" and "Keun-nun-mang-duk" is proposed for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Unlike other weapon systems, a naval vessel has unique characteristics in that the vessel itself is a naval unit. In limited space, compartments with various objectives and characteristics need to be arranged, so that vessel performance is maximized. This paper studied a compartment arrangement algorithm that considers activity relationships among compartments and survivability of a vessel. Based on the study, a compartment arrangement application is developed that can generate various layout alternatives swiftly. The application developed in this study aims at automating a two dimensional compartment layout problem. A combinatorial optimization is performed with the differential evolution algorithm to achieve the optimized layout.

GPU-accelerated Lattice Boltzmann Simulation for the Prediction of Oil Slick Movement in Ocean Environment (GPU 가속 기술을 이용한 격자 볼츠만법 기반 원유 확산 과정 시뮬레이션)

  • This paper describes a new simulation technique for advection-diffusion phenomena over the sea surface using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), capable of predicting oil dispersion from tankers. The LBM is used to solve the pollutant transport problem within the framework of the ocean environment. The sea space is represented by the lattices, where each lattice has the information on oil transportation. Since dispersed oils (i.e., oil droplets) at sea are transported by convection due to waves, buoyancy, and turbulent diffusion, the conservation of mass and many physical oil transport rules were used in the prediction model. Since the LBM is modeled using the uniform lattices and simple rules, it can be easily accelerated by the parallel mechanism, for example, GPU-accelerated method. The proposed model using the LBM is used to simulate a simple pollution event with the oil pollutants of 10,000 kL. The simulation results indicate that the LBM method accelerated with the GPU is 6 times faster than that without the GPU.

Recently, the requirement for an optimal layout method of the structure has been raised. Thus, a layout method of the floating offshore structure was proposed in this study. First, an optimization problem for layout design was mathematically formulated, and then an optimization algorithm was implemented based on the genetic algorithm in order to solve it. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, it was applied to examples ofFPSO topsides and an offshore wind turbine. As a result, it was shown that the proposed method can be applied to layout design of the floating offshore structure.

Study of Hull Form Development of 5-Ton-Class Catamaran-Type Coastal Fishing Boat for Welfare Accommodation of Fishing Crew (어선원 복지공간 확보를 위한 5톤급 쌍동형 연안어선 선형개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper reports the hull form development and resistance performance of a 5-ton-class catamaran-type coastal fishing boat. The weight estimation and preliminary design were basically extracted from existing coastal fishing vessels. In addition, the resistance performance was investigated using a model test in a high-speed circulating water channel and was analyzed in comparison to an existing catamaran fishing vessel. As a result, the modified hull achieved an approximately 30% reduction in resistance compared to the previous hull. The stability or boarding sensitivity of the modified hull form was more stable or comfortable than the original hull form based on a trim and sinkage comparison between the two boats.

The medical industry applications of current 3D printer are a virtual simulation, custom medical implants manufactured, practice of medical personnel. Numerical optimization of Wells turbine for wave energy extraction

  • The present work focuses multi-objective optimization of blade sweep for a Wells turbine. The blade-sweep parameters at the mid and the tip sections are selected as design variables. The peak-torque coefficient and the corresponding efficiency are the objective functions, which are maximized. The numerical analysis has been carried out by solving 3D RANS equations based on k-w SST turbulence model. Nine design points are selected within a design space and the simulations are run. Based on the computational results, surrogate-based weighted average models are constructed and the population based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm gave Pareto optimal solutions. The peak-torque coefficient and the corresponding efficiency are enhanced, and the results are analysed using CFD simulations. Two extreme designs in the Pareto solutions show that the peak-torque-coefficient is increased by 28.28% and the corresponding efficiency is decreased by 13.5%. A detailed flow analysis shows the separation phenomena change the turbine performance.
