Using physiological data which had been already published, we investigated variation of phytoplankton communities due to changes of marine environmental factor at 2 stations of northern Gamak Bay from November 2007 to September 2008. Dominant species (occupied species above 10%) were dinoflagellates 1 species and diatom 11 species. Diatom Skeletonema costatum was observed as dominant species during the periods except in summer (i.e. July and August), especially, which occupied above 90% in December. On the other hand, dominant species during summer were diatom Eucampia zodiacus and Chaetoceros spp., Considering the results of other physiological studies, S. costatum might be non-dominant species during summer by following reasons 1) growth rate of E. zodiacus might be taster than that of S. costatum under the temperature during summer although both S. costatum and E. zodiacus are eurythermal and euryhaline species. 2) Species as E. zodiacus characterized by low affinity with light might have a chance to be dominant with increasing optical transparency due to low suspended solids in July. 3) In aspect of nutrition, species of growth strategist as S. costatum could be dominant in relatively low concentration of phosphate and species of storage strategist as E. zodiacus could be dominant in relatively high concentration of phosphate during summer in this study area. In order to understand the phytoplankton dynamics in detail, the physiological informations about strains isolated from this study area are necessary because physiological conditions are different depending on isolated area.
Tidal flats are well developed in and around the Yellow Sea of Northeast Asia, and benthic diatoms are the most important primary producers in corresponding habitats. In the present study, the taxonomy and distribution of small negligible diatom species from Northeast Asian tidal flats are investigated for better understanding of the diversity of Korean marine benthic diatoms. The presence of Plagiogrammopsis minima and Diploneis aestuarii, which may have been ignored and/or misidentified due to their small size, were identified by both means of light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Plagiogrammopsis minima has never been reported from Korea before the present study, while Diploneis aestuarii was only once mentioned without any photographic information. Accordingly, we provide the morphological characteristics of the two species in detail with LM and SEM observation. Information on the regional distribution of the two species is also provided. Results of the present study contribute to the better understanding of the biodiversity of the Korean marine benthic diatoms.
A study on the indigenous diatoms was carried out at 103 sites during August 2008 to April 2011 from the marine and the brackish waters in Korea. A fine structure of small-sized diatoms was examined using a light and scanning electron microscopy. Sixty species of diatoms were newly identified and composed of 3 class, 6 subclass, 16 order, 21 family and 39 genus. The detailed nomenclatures, references, photographs and distributions were here reported. Of 60 species, the most frequent species was Tryblionella coarctata appearing 24 times, and 22 times followed by Thalassiosira lacustris, Cocconeis stauroneiformis was 20 times. In the level of genus, Chaetoceros, Parlibells and Thalassiosira were included 4 species, Actinocyclus, Minidiscus and Licmophora were included 3 species. This study will provide the knowledge of the diversity level of diatom in Korea, the knowledge is important on the diatoms for further studies.
To find unrecorded diatom species, random materials were collected from the freshwater, brackish water, and coastal waters. Benthic and periphytic diatoms were sampled from twelve localities. Thirteen species belonging to eight genera are newly added to the national flora of diatom. In the intertidal areas, the five species are new to Korea, Anaulus minutus Grunow, Anaulus simonsenii Witkowski & Metzeltin, Eunotogramma laeve Grunow, Eunotogramma productum Grunow, and Nitzschia subcapitellata Hustedt. The following two species are new from brackish waters, Chamaepinnularia krookiformis (Krammer) Lange-Bertalot & Krammer and Cymatoneis ovalis Heiden. The following four species are new from mountain peatlands, Geissleria ignota (Krasske) Lange-Bertlaot & Metzeltin, Chamaepinnularia hassiaca (Krasske) Cantonati & Lange-Bertalot, Chamaepinnularia mediocris (Krasske) Lange-Bertalot and Pinnularia linearidivergens Kulikovskiy, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin. The following two species are new from river or streams, Cymbella hustedtii var. compacta Krammer and Cymbella stigmaphora ${\emptyset}strup$.
In order to the epilithic diatom community and an assessment of water quality with diatom assemblage index of organic water pollution (DAlpo) in the middle reaches of the Nakdong River, the samples were collected from nine sampling stations on May, July, September, November, 2002 and on January 2003. A total 162 taxa was identified from this study, which were classified into 139 species and 23 varieties belonging to 33 genera. Achnanthes minutissima, Navicula subminuscula, Navicula viridula var. rostellata, Nitzschia inconspicua and Nitzschia palea indentified in every stations and examination for the whole periods. A total of 12 taxa was dominant species at any station at least one more times. In this study, average DAlpo was 30.90 ${\sim}$ 44.61 and the saprobic level was estimated ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic in the middle reaches of the Nakdong River.

A study on indigenous diatoms was carried out at 10 sites from May 2014 to December 2016 in marine and freshwater in Korea. Seventeen species of diatoms are new to Korea and they are divided into 3 classes, 4 subclasses, 10 orders, 14 families, and 16 genera. The nomenclatures, references, dimensions, specimens examined, local habitat, distribution in Korea, and photograph are reported here. Seventeen species found in marine, freshwater, and brackish water showed species-specific habitats.
Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bacillariophyceae) is a marine diatom which has been supplied as a food of bivalves. In this study, growth responses of P. tricornutum to some nitrogen sources and sodium were investigated by measuring cell number and contents of chlorophyll a in culture. In medium with nitrogen and sodium, brisk cell division occurred and maximum growth rate was respectively found in the medium with 150 mg/l of nitrate and 10 mg/l of ammonium and urea. At 10-500 mg/l ammonium and urea and 200-500 mg/l nitrate, specific growth rate decreased slightly. However, no cell division observed in sodium-deficient medium, regardless of presence or absence of nitrogen. This suggests that sodium is required for the nitrogen uptake of P. tricornutum, resulting nitrogen uptake leading to cell division. Also the upper limits of ammonium and nitrate for the growth of P. tricornutum seem to be 10 mg/l and 500 mg/l, respectively.
The initiation of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooming in the South Sea of Korea occurs in the sea near Naro-Do in late August. In this paper, the relationships of this annual occurrence with the environmental conditions are presented. In early summer, the winds in the sea near Naro-Do are southwesterly and the upwelling occurs in the near-shore area. The favorable winds to the upwelling are relaxed in August and the downwelling favorable northeasterly winds set in around late August. The change of wind direction causes the onshore transport of warm-and-fresh off-shore water into the sea near Naro-Do and a front between near-shore water and off·shore water is formed. Along the front, downwelling occurs and the environmental conditions for the diatom become unfavorable. When the typhoon and storm bring well-mixed East China Sea water into the sea near Naro-Do in September, the conditions for the dinoflagellates become unfavorable and blooming of C. polykrikoides disappears.
We evaluated the toxic effects of antifouling paint (irgarol and diuron) on the population growth rate (r) of the marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum. The r of S. costatum was determined after 96 hrs of exposure to irgarol (0, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.5 and 5 ㎍ l-1) and diuron (0, 7.81, 15.63, 31.25, 62.5 and 125 ㎍ l-1). It was observed that r in the control (absence of irgarol and diuron) were greater than 0.04, while r in the treatment groups decreased with increasing irgarol and diuron concentrations. Irgarol and diuron reduced r in a dose-dependent manner with significant decreases occurring at concentrations above 0.63 and 15.63 ㎍ l-1, respectively. The EC50 values of r in irgarol and diuron exposure were 1.09 and 45.45 ㎍ l-1. No observed effect concentration (NOEC) were 0.31 and 7.81 ㎍ l-1, the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) were 0.63 and 15.63 ㎍ l-1. This result indicate that a concentration of greater than 0.63 ㎍ l-1 of irgarol and 15.63 ㎍ l-1 of diuron in marine ecosystems induced to decreasing r of S. costatum. Also, these toxic values can be useful as a baseline data for the toxic evaluation of irgarol and diuron in marine ecosystems.
Biological pump processes generated by diatom production in the surface water of the Southern Ocean play an important role in exchanging CO2 gas between the atmosphere and ocean. In this study, the biogenic opal content of the sediments was measured to elucidate the variation in the primary production of diatoms in the surface water of the Southern Ocean since the last glacial period. A piston core (COR-1bPC) was collected from the Conrad Rise, which is located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. The sediments were mainly composed of siliceous ooze, and sediment lightness increased and magnetic susceptibility decreased in an upward direction. The biogenic opal content was low (38.9%) during the last glacial period and high (73.4%) during the Holocene, showing a similar variation to that of Antarctic ice core ΔT and CO2 concentration. In addition, the variation of biogenic opal content in core COR-1bPC is consistent with previous results reported in the Antarctic Zone, south of the Antarctic Polar Front, in the Southern Ocean. The glacial-interglacial biogenic opal production was influenced by the extent of sea ice coverage and degree of water column stability. During the last glacial period, the diatom production was reduced due to the penetration of light being limited in the euphotic zone by the extended sea ice coverage caused by the lowered seawater temperature. In addition, the formation of a strong thermocline in more extensive areas of sea ice coverage led to stronger water column stability, resulting in reduced diatom production due to the reduction in the supply of nutrient-rich subsurface water caused by a decrease in upwelling intensity. Under such environmental circumstances, diatom productivity decreased in the Antarctic Zone during the last glacial period, but the biogenic opal content increased rapidly under warming conditions with the onset of deglaciation.
