The world is presently facing key challenges due to the population explosion, shortages in renewable sources of energy, and environmental problems. One important aspect of ecological intensification is the use and improvement of marginal lands and spaces often ignored, until now. Goats are known to be well adapted to scrubs, forage trees, and rangelands. Goats could contribute marginally, but significantly, to the growing demand for meat without using arable lands. Since 2000, there were 752 million goats globally, and goat livestock increased by 26.8% in 2010, accounting for 954 million heads. Goats are widespread due to their high adaptability to different environmental conditions and nutritional regimes, high productivity, and low maintenance cost. A significant growth in goat number was noticed in the period 2000~2010 in the Netherlands (+113.83%), in spite of the 9.75% decrease in EU-27. A cheese making goat farm in the Netherlands showed how it can survive in the one fifth size of the average. It may be a good model for the Korean goat industry since it uses seasonal breeding and results in reduced "goaty" flavor in the cheese.

Regarding to inference about a scalar measure of internal scatter of Ρ-variate normal population, this paper considers an interval estimation of the generalized variance, │$\Sigma$│. Due to complicate sampling distribution, fully parametric frequentist approach for the interval estimation is not available and thus Bayesian method is pursued to calculate the highest probability density (HPD) interval for the generalized variance. It is seen that the marginal posterior distribution of the generalized variance is intractable, and hence a weighted Monte Carlo method, a variant of Chen and Shao (1999) method, is developed to calculate the HPD interval of the generalized variance. Necessary theories involved in the method and computation are provided. Finally, a simulation study is given to illustrate and examine the proposed method.
This study examines the effects of time spent with parents and peers on generational differences in children's externalizing behavior problems in immigrant families. Using the Child Development Supplement and Time Diaries from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we found that first and second generation children exhibited fewer externalizing behavior problems than did third generation children, despite their lower socioeconomic status. First and second generation children spent more time with either one or both parents, and less time with peers, on the weekend day than did third generation children. We found a marginal but beneficial effect of time spent with fathers on the weekday, but not on the weekend day. The implications are that time spent with fathers on weekdays differs from time spent with fathers on the weekend, and that promoting immigrant father involvement on the weekday through school or community programs could benefit immigrant children.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this review is to summarize the findings from clinically important publications over the last year in the area of VTE. In this review, we discuss 11 randomized controlled trials published from March 2013 to April 2014. The COAG and the EU-PACT trials indicate that pharmacogenetic testing has either no usefulness in the initial dosing of vitamin K antagonists or marginal usefulness in the Caucasian population. Recent clinical trials with novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have demonstrated that the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, and dabigatran are not inferior to those of conventional anticoagulants for the treatment of VTE. The PEITHO and ULTIMA trials suggested that rescue thrombolysis or catheter-directed thrombolysis may maximize the clinical benefits and minimize the bleeding risk. Lastly, riociguat has a proven efficacy in treating chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. In the future, NOACs, riociguat, and catheter-directed thrombolysis have the potential to revolutionize the management of patients with VTE.

Longitudinal categorical data commonly occur from medical, health, and social sciences. In these data, the correlation of repeated outcomes is taken into account to explain the effects of covariates exactly. In this paper, we introduce marginalized random effects models that are used for the estimation of the population-averaged effects of covariates. We also review how these models have been developed. Real data analysis is presented using the marginalized random effects.
Cavernocypris reddelli n. sp. is a new species of the genus Cavernocypris collected from spring waters of Texas, U.S.A.. This is the sixth species of the genus described so far. It can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the shape and length of carapace, presence of robust marginal pore canals on right valve, number and length of setae on second antenna, shape of hemipenis, numbers of whorls on the Zenker organ, and differences in other parts of chaetotaxy. The new species was compared with other species and a new taxonomic key for the genus is presented for future studies.
The 1995 tax reform in Korea has brought adjustment to the tax bracket, marginal tax rate, and tax deduction system which resulted in significant decrease in the income tax progressivity. In this paper we study the causal effect of the tax reform on male labor supply using difference-in-differences method. Using the data from Economic Active Population Survey (EAPS) and Daewoo Panel Data, we find about 1.5% increase in the hours worked of male wage workers.

This study was conducted to distinguish adult morphology of the giant water bug (Lethocerus deyrollei) between over-wintered (OLD) and new-born (NEW) populations using materials collected from Gyodong island in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, as well as individuals reared in the laboratory (LAB population) as a control. As a result, no fundamental differences were found in external body structure between OLD, NEW, and LAB populations. However, marginal area of basal procoxa in ventral prothorax and jointed part of forefemur and foretibia were greatly worn in the OLD population. Mid-claws were shorter than 0.5 times the length of the 2nd mid-tarsus; the membranous margin of hemelytra was greatly worn; and hairs of the 5th abdominal tergum were greatly reduced in the OLD population.

This study observes the difference in the actual regional ripple effect of the decrease in admission resources due to the decrease in school age population, which has been weak in empirical studies, and how much the decrease in competition rate by department nationwide provides a significant shock to the decrease in enrollment rate in the population unit. An empirical quantitative analysis was attempted. As a result of applying the panel-tobit regression model, a clear gap was confirmed in the decrease in the registration rate due to the decrease in the competition rate both nationally and in the provinces, and in particular, a highly significant relationship was derived with the decrease in the recruitment rate. In particular, the sensitivity of the risk of unrecruitment due to a decrease in competition rate was the highest in the Jeolla region (0.499), followed by the Gangwon region (0.475) and the Gyeongsang region (0.471), and the metropolitan region (0.158) was confirmed to be the most stable. This suggests that the gap in insufficient funding has gradually widened by region over the past 10 years, and that the shock wave becomes more pronounced in the provinces farther away from the metropolitan area. Based on this study, if we deviate from the standardized application of university development policies for the metropolitan area and regional universities, and present a customized higher education strategy for each region, it will be an opportunity to prevent local extinction due to a decrease in the school-age population and achieve coexistence with higher education institutions and regions at the same time.
The recent reform of child care policy is to give priority to double-income households in the use of childcare facilities. This study analyzed the effect of the use of childcare facilities on the employment of married women under the on-going reform. Using the data from the 19th and 21st wave of the Korean Labor and Income Study, the marginal treatment effect (MTE) analysis method was used to eliminate the selection bias in which the sub-population targeted for policy is determined according to the priority when childcare demand exceeds supply. The study finds that the employment effect of married women who use childcare facilities does not differ statistically from the employment effect of married women who do not use childcare facilities.
