Recently, a number of papers on adaptive control scheme of manipulators are proposed. Slotine and Li[1] showed an adaptive control scheme for robot manipulator. The controller was described in closed form. And later Niemeyer and Slotine discussed about a computational implementation of the controller in recursive form[2]. Walker proposed another adaptive control scheme which can be implemented by a recursive-form controller[4]. Closed-form description is used for the analysis or design of adaptive control systems while recursive-form realization is used for implementation of the controller. The relation between the closed-form realization and the recursive-form one seems to be inadequately referred. Hence, it makes sense to consider the relation between the closed-form description and the recursive-form one. In this paper, first, we make a simple derivation of an closed-form dynamics description of a robot arm from its recursive-form description. And then we derive the closed-form realization of Walker's scheme applied to manipulators having no kinematic loop. We clarify the difference between the Walker's scheme and Slotine's and evaluate the convergence under the controllers.

The traditional robot manipulators are actuated by continuous range of motion actuators such as motors or hydraulic cylinders. However, there are many applications of mechanisms and robotic manipulators where only a finite number of locations need to be reached, and the robot’s trajectory is not important as long as it is bounded. Binary manipulator uses actuators which have only two stable states. As a result, binary manipulators have a finite number of states. The number of states of a binary manipulator grows exponentially with the number of actuators. This kind of robot manipulator has some advantage compared to a traditional one. Feedback control is not required, task repeatability can be very high, and finite state actuators are generally inexpensive. And this kind of robot manipulator has a fault tolerant mechanism because of kinematic redundancy. In this paper, we solve the inverse kinematic problem of a binary parallel robot manipulator using neural network and test the validity of this structure using some arbitrary points m the workspace of the robot manipulator. As a result, we can show that the neural network can find the nearest feasible points and corresponding binary states of the joints of the robot manipulator
In the agricultural field, interests in research using robots for fruit harvesting are continuously increasing. Dual arm manipulators are promising because of its abilities like task-distribution and role-sharing. To operate it efficiently, the task sequence must be planned adequately. In our previous study, a collision-free path planning method based on a genetic algorithm is proposed for dual arm manipulators doing tasks cooperatively. However, in order to simplify the complicated collision-check problem, the movement between tasks of two robots should be synchronized, and thus there is a problem that the robots must wait and resume their movement. In this paper, we propose a heuristic algorithm that can reduce the total time of the optimal solution obtained by using the previously proposed genetic algorithm. It iteratively desynchronizes the task sequence of two robots and reduces the waiting time. For evaluation, the proposed algorithm is applied to the same work as the previous study. As a result, we can obtain a faster solution having 22.57 s than that of the previous study having 24.081 s. It will be further studied to apply the proposed algorithm to the fruit harvesting.

Parallel manipulators have been used for a variety of applications, including the motion simulators and mechanism for precise machining. Since the ball screws used for linear motion of legs of the Stewart-Gough type parallel manipulator provide wider contact areas than revolute joints, parallel manipulators are usually more affected by frictional forces than serial manipulators. In this research, the method for detecting the frictional forces arising in the parallel manipulator using the gravitational force is proposed. First, the reference trajectories are computed from the dynamic model of the parallel manipulator assuming that it is subject to only the gravitational force without friction. When the parallel manipulator is controlled so that the platform follows the computed reference trajectory, this control force for each leg is equal to the friction force arising in each leg. It is shown that control performance can be improved when the friction compensation based on this information is added to the controller for position control of the moving plate of a parallel manipulator.
A modular manipulator in serial-chain structure usually consists of a series of modularized revolute joint and link modules. The geometric shapes of these modules affect the number of possible configurations of modular manipulator after assembly. Therefore, it is important to design the geometry of the joint and link modules that allow various configurations of the manipulators with minimal set of modules. In this paper, a new 1-DoF(degree of freedom) joint module and simple link modules are designed based on a methodology of joint configurations using a series of Rotational(type-R) and Twist(type-T) joints. Two of the joint modules can be directly connected so that two types of 2-DoFs joints could be assembled without a link module between them. The proposed geometries of joint and link modules expand the possible configurations of assembled modular manipulators compared to existing ones. Modular manipulator system of this research can be a cornerstone of user-centered markets with various solution but low-cost, compared to conventional manipulators of fixed-configurations determined by the provider.
The 6DOF (degrees of freedom) Parallel Manipulators have some advantages that are high power, high rigidity, high precision for positioning and compact mechanism compared with conventional serial link manipulators. For these Parallel Manipulators, it can be expected to work in the new fields such that the medical operation, high-precision processing technology and so on. For this expectation, it is necessary to control the action reaction pair of forces which act between the Parallel Manipulator and the operated object. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of the 6DOF Parallel Manipulator and present numerical simulation results.
The recent developments and studies in the framework of output tracking control in the field of robotics that has been studied in the Control Laboratory, are presented. An output controller based on“Hardware-ln-the-Loop Simulation”(HILS) and“Rapid Control Prototyping”(RCP) concepts is developed using dSPACE. These new concepts are shown to be particularly beneficial for manipulator control tasks. In the Elbow manipulator design, there are two kinds of manipulators, namely the serial-drive type and the parallelogram-drive manipulator, The objective of this research is to model the two Elbow manipulators and to implement the proposed controller for manipulator applications. The control goal is to force the manipulator to follow a given trajectory in the given work space. Output controllers of the two elbow manipulators that are based on the model matching control approach have been implemented in two models that represent the robot equations of motion. To reduce the efforts in evaluating the proposed algorithm, a new system configuration method, based on HILS and RCP tools, was suggested to determine the parameters of the integrated dynamic system.

In this paper, Time Delay Control(TDC) for robot manipulators is analyzed and its problems are founded. In order to remedy the problems, the enhanced controller is proposed and analyzed. The effect of friction associated with TDC is reported and its cause is presented. Through the analysis, simulation and experiment, it is shown that the friction effect causes serious degradation in control performance and that it is a result of the error of Time Delay Estimation(TDE) in TDC. In order to remedy the problems, TDC combined with Internal Model Control(IMC) concept is proposed. The proposed compensator is effective enough to handle the bad effect of friction, and is so simple and efficient as to match positive attribute of TDC. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of proposed controller against the friction of the robot manipulators.

A highly accurate model-free controller is proposed for trajectory tracking control of robot manipulators. The proposed controller incorporates time-delay estimation (TDE) to estimate and cancel continuous nonlinearities of robot dynamics, and exploits fuzzy logic systems to suppress the effect of the TDE error, which is due to discontinuous nonlinearities such as friction. To this end, integral sliding mode is defined using desired error dynamics, and a Mamdani-type fuzzy inference system is constructed. As a result, the proposed controller achieves the desired error dynamics well. Implementation of the proposed controller is easy because the design of the controller is intuitive and straightforward, and calculations of the complex robot dynamics are not required. The tracking performance of the proposed controller is verified experimentally using a 3-degree of freedom PUMA-type robot manipulator.
This paper proposes a novel fault tolerant tracking control (FTTC) scheme for a class of nonlinear systems with actuator failures based on the policy iteration (PI) algorithm and the adaptive fault observer. The estimated actuator failure from an adaptive fault observer is utilized to construct an improved performance index function that reflects the failure, regulation and control simultaneously. With the help of the proper performance index function, the FTTC problem can be transformed into an optimal control problem. The fault tolerant tracking controller is composed of the desired controller and the approximated optimal feedback one. The desired controller is developed to maintain the desired tracking performance at the steady-state, and the approximated optimal feedback controller is designed to stabilize the tracking error dynamics in an optimal manner. By establishing a critic neural network, the PI algorithm is utilized to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, and then the approximated optimal feedback controller can be derived. Based on Lyapunov technique, the uniform ultimate boundedness of the closed-loop system is proven. The proposed FTTC scheme is applied to reconfigurable manipulators with two degree of freedoms in order to test the effectiveness via numerical simulation.
