  • In open GIS environment, a GIS client can access spatial data in different types of GIS sowers with the same Interfaces. This means that open GIS components software ensures the interoperability throughout the heterogeneous GIS servers. The user response time, however, tends to be increased, if the client makes use of the standard interfaces for data accesses that can ensure interoperability. This is because the format of spatial data accessed from a specific GIS server must be transformed into common format, such as Rowset in OLE/DB, which is compatible with the standard interfaces. In this paper, we develop efficient techniques for data buffering in GIS client to reduce the response time. We design the buffer management method, which Is based on the space partitioning, and Integrate buffer management components into MapBase, an open GIS component software. And we also, show that buffer management proposed in this paper yields significant performance improvement in GIS client.

Water management is the top priority to be pursued both on daily management and long-term management at TWMO. There are five departments to perform a wide range of tasks in addition to water management. All management prescriptions are simply to provide sustainable clean water for about four millions population in Taipei. TWMO has gone through 16 years experience of development and implementation of GIS in water management. The objectives of this paper are to provide the major ingredients of successful and operational GIS for water management. The five departments at TWMO have performed tasks such as city planning, construction management, forest management, land use enforcement, soil and water conservation, water quality monitoring and protection, garbage collection, and sewage disposal management. Data base creation was one of the major jobs to be done. Update of data base has to be done on a daily basis. Computers, its peripheral, and software are essential for GIS developed at TWMO. Know-how and technical skill on computers and GIS for every technician are contributing significantly such that GIS can be implemented on most of jobs performed at TWMO. Implementations of GIS have been pursued by application modules on a task-oriented basis. Application modules are simple, easy to use, and menu driven with only Chinese. Web-based and mobile GIS are the new components that make water management at TWMO stay on the right course. To solve problems encountered in water management by GIS at TWMO can be easily and user-friendly may be the most important experience.

  • GIS (geographic information system) is a relatively new tool in the coastal and ocean area management toolbox, but its uses and functionality are quickly being recognized. GIS can help identity potential threats to coastal and ocean resources and evaluate alternative land-use and management practices. The application of GIS to coastal and ocean issues continues to grow as the general use of GIS matures. GIS software and technicians with the skills to apply GIS are now commonplace at federal, state and local government agencies as well as many NGOs and the private sector. However, these applications were focused on their special purposes. Therefore, we describe the management strategy of marine GIS and its components. The results of this study can be used as the fundamental guideline for the coastal and ocean management and sustainable development.

  • Local government has constructed GIS DB for efficient business achievement and effective management of complex city facilities and has been developing and utilizing application systems, such as Underground Facility Management System Road Management System and so on. However, Facility Management System is providing functions for business, but not for GIS DB's maintenance. City facilities GIS DB managed by GIS technical expert collects basic figure and attribute information through survey and field investigation and is constructed via complex process, such as structurize editing etc. So it has been concerned that the update and confidence of CIS DB can be lower if a business man who does not have enough experiences about Facility Management System operates it by himself. Therefore, functions that enable business users to operate Facility Management System easily should be provided.

  • Information sharing is the main purpose of realizing interoperability between the application domains of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper presents and describes the workflow of BIM-GIS interoperability for highway traffic information sharing. An innovative and automatic Dynamo process was presented to transfer the shapes and attributes of the shapefile from GIS to BIM. On the basis of the transformed BIM model, the detailed traffic data was added and expressed in the form of families and sheets to expand traffic information. Then, the shapes of the model were swept as solid geometries in the BIM environment applying Dynamo. The expanded BIM model was transferred back to the GIS system using the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) scheme. The mutual communication between BIM and GIS was achieved based on Dynamo and IFC. This paper provides a convenient and feasible way to realize BIM-GIS interoperability for highway traffic information sharing according to the characteristics of highways in terms of graphic expression and model creation.
