This paper presents to analyze patterns from single and complex malodors using gas sensor array based on metal oxide semiconductors. The aim of research is to identify and discriminate single malodors such as $NH_3$, $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ and their mixtures according to concentration levels. Measurement system for analyzing patterns from malodors is constructed by an array of metal oxide semiconductor sensors which are available commercially together with associate electronics. The patterns from sensory system are analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which is simple statistical pattern recognition technique. Throughout the experimental trails, we confirmed the experimental procedure for measurement system such as sensors calibration time and gas flow rate, and discriminated malodors using pattern analysis technique.
The deodorizing responses of the steam distillate from some medicinal plants(G-3) on three representative malodors were evaluated by estimating the best estimate threshold(BET) of odor responses. With a single spray of G-3, the BETs of malodors such as ammonia, acetic acid, and ethyl acetate were found to increase 4.11, 32.6 and 13.1 fold, respectively, which indicated G-3 possessed a potent deodorizing activity. The deodorizing potency of G-3 was also demonstrated to be as high as and even higher than those of the commercial deodorizing agents.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reduce odor complaints by identifying problems with odor management at the site of the water regeneration center and researching odor management methods. Due to the high population density of Korea, sewage treatment facilities are adjacent to residential and industrial areas. According to previous studies, the main malodor-emitting facilities of sewage treatment facilities were preliminary treatment facilities (2,220 times), sedimentation basins (4,628 times), and sludge treatment facilities (9,616 times). Research design, data and methodology: Compound malodors and designated malodor-producing substances were collected from five site boundaries of the water regeneration center and analyzed according to the official methods to test malodor, and a total of two times (August and September 2020) were conducted. Results: As a result of the measurement, in the green area in front of the center office, compound malodors were detected at a maximum of 8 times and at least 3 times during the dawn time. As for the designated malodor-producing substances, 0.1ppm of ammonia was detected in the green area in front of the center office and the park golf course. This is within 15 times the maximum allowable emission level of compound malodors and within 1ppm of the maximum allowable emission level of ammonia. Conclusions: Even if the dilution rate of the compound malodors did not exceed the maximum allowable emission level, the odor could be recognized, and more research is needed in the future to establish effective reduction measures according to the subjective and individual and seasonal odor characteristics.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the causes of odors generated in traditional markets and to suggest appropriate application technologies to solve them. Research design, data and methodology: In order to achieve the purpose of this study, complex malodors, TVOC, and hydrogen sulfide were measured three times at each point in Wonju-city, Gangwon-do using direct-reading odor measuring equipment in Joong-ang Traditional Market's Korean beef Alley, Sundae Alley, and Joong-ang Citizens Traditional Market. Therefore, the average value was compared with the emission standard and analyzed. Results: As a result of the study, complex malodors exceeded the emission standards at all points, and hydrogen sulfide exceeded the emission standards at all except for one point. Conclusions: The odor generated in the traditional market has various causes and low concentration, so it is necessary to reduce the odor by using an appropriate technology.

Purpose: As interest in odor increases, odor complaints are also rapidly increasing. Traditional markets are not included in malodor control areas and are not easy to manage, so measure the odor substances generated in traditional markets and analyze the cause of high concentration points. Research design, data and methodology: The average value was presented by continuously measuring the combined odor, TVOC, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia for 5 minutes at 100m intervals in Joong-ang traditional market, Jayu traditional market, Doraemi traditional market, and Sundae Alley in Wonju, Gangwon-do. In each market, up to the third highest concentration point for each measurement item was marked and analyzed. Results: The Joong-ang traditional market, Doraemi traditional market, and Sundae Alley had high readings at the intersection. The Jayu traditional market had high measurements around restaurants and clothing stores. In addition, the concentration of complex malodors was also high at the points where the hydrogen sulfide concentration was measured. Conclusions: Odor generated in traditional markets is an important indicator for merchants and consumers. Therefore, in future studies, analysis that can supplement the limitations of measurement data and seasonal effects is needed.

In order to investigate microbiological control of malodors, particularly including ammonia, the effect of three thermophilic ammonium tolerant bacteria strains. TAT112. TAT117 and TAT119, were tested during composting of pig manure in the laboratory scale composters. The total weight, volatile solids and BOD of the pig manure compost were decreased during composting process in all treatments. The temperature in all treatments rose in first 3 days dramatically, but that in control without inoculation reached its maximum most lately among the treatments. The nitrogen content of drain water accumulated inside and outside composter, and trapped in 6N $H_2SO_4$ was lower in TAT112 inoculated composter than in control. However, it was not lower in the treatment of TAT117 and TAT119 inoculated. Ammonia concentration in the exhaust gas monitored everyday during composting also demonstrated that it was lowest at TAT112 inoculated among all treatments. It was appeared to have an effect on reducing ammonia emission at the treatment of TAT112 inoculated than the control.
A study on the screening and isolation of microorganism was performed for the removal of main malodor, such as ammonia, produced from the livestock farm. The main malodor components in livestock farm are ammonia, volatile fatty acids, sulfur compounds and trimethylamine. Damages to man and livestock were originated from malodors mainly due to ammonia, and thus ammonia reduction experiments were performed. Sludge of sewage treatment plant was inoculated in the sesame dregs culture, from which ammonia gas was produced. An aerobically grown, pure cultured isolated from the 10th enrichment culture was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing and identified as Alcaligenes sp. NS-1. This strain NS-1 precultured in the sesame dregs was found to remove ammonia gas with an efficiency of approximately 99-100% at an average concentration of 40 ppmv of ammonia gas. When the strain NS-1 sprayed to pig excrements, the removal efficiency at an average concentration of 100 ppmv of ammonia was approximately 60% after 16 hr.
This study was to objectify differences in the results of odor testing according to the characteristics of panel members that participate in air dilution olfactory method (ADOM) testing. When differences in the results of olfactory testing were reviewed in relation to characteristics of the panelists, the result of entire panels for the site boundary Proficiency Testing Materials (PTMs) showed no difference according to panelist sex, age, smoking status, and past participation in ADOM tests. As for the outlet PTMs, distinct differences appeared in relation to the smoking status and age of panelists. The frequency distribution for all the panelists (Dev($D/T_{total}$)) showed a form similar to a normal distribution, so it is thought to be more appropriate for the review of effect of panelist characteristics on the result of air dilution olfactory tests. In addition, the ADOM testing method implemented as the standard method for odor compounds in Korea (Dev($D/T_3$)) will have to be implemented along with a concurrent assessment, for the purpose of identifying the effect of panelist characteristics on administrative dispositions against malodors.
Limonene, pinene, and isoprene are abundant and ubiquitous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are found in various natural products and also produced from various manufacture processes. Limonene and pinene are major components of food additives and household products for enrichment of good flavors and elimination of malodors, and isoprene is a basal motif of monoterpenes such as limonene and pinene. They have shown many beneficial effects such as chemopreventive, chemotherapeutic, and antioxidant activities. Upon certain conditions, however, adverse effects of these compounds on human health have also been reported. Although they do not seem to have acute and severe toxicity to human, they can easily generate secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) when they react with oxygen and/or ozone, which have shown certain toxic effects on experimental animal models as well as on humans. Numerous household and scented products containing limonene, pinene, and isoprene are widely used in these days. However, biological consequences upon exposure to these products are largely unknown. The aim of this review is to summarize and analyze the current understanding on the biological effects of VOCs, in particular limonene, pinene, and isoprene, as well as their SOAs.

Biofiltration is a simple, effective, economically viable and the most widely used gas treatment technique for treating malodors at low concentrations and high flow rates. This paper reports the performance of two lab scale immobilized cell biofilters operated in continuous mode for hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) and ammonia ($NH_3$) removal. The removal efficiency (RE, %) and the elimination capacity (EC, $g/m^3{\cdot}hr$) profiles were monitored by subjecting the biofilters to different loading rates of $H_2S$ (0.3 to $8\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$) and $NH_3$ (0.3 to $4.5\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$). The removal efficiencies were greater than 99% when inlet loading rate to the biofilters were upto $6\;gH_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$ and $4\;gNH_3/m^3{\cdot}hr$ respectively. The performance of the biofilters were also ascertained by conducting shock loading studies at a loading rate of $10\;gH_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$ and $6\;gNH_3/m^3{\cdot}hr$. The results from this study show high removal efficiency, good recuperating potential and stability of the immobilized microbial consortia to transient shock loads.
