  • The hazardous effects of heavy alcohol intake and smoking to body systems have been identified by numerous studies, and there is many influencing factors on alcohol intake and smoking choices. The aim of this study is to identify the correlation between alcohol intake and digit ratio (2D:4D), as well as smoking and digit ratio (2D:4D) in university students. Participants were 121 male and 314 female university students. After filling in questionnaire related alcohol and smoking history, 2nd and 4th finger lengths were measured on both hands using vernier callipers with photocopy. This study showed 2D:4D of the males was 0.95, and that of the females was 0.96. There was a significant difference between male and female in digit ratio. The digit ratio according alcohol intake level significantly differed in only women's left hand. The digit ratio according smoking level significantly differed in only men's left hand. Moreover, The digit ratio was negatively associated with alcohol intake and smoking. The results of this study suggest that the digit ratio (2D:4D) affected with fetal testosterone concentration is negatively related to alcohol intake and smoking. Therefore, the digit ratio would be used in preventive program of alcohol intake and smoking of adolescent, or in antialcoholism /smoking cessation program as a biological basic data.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bone age on physique and physical fitness in elementary school students. For this purpose, the structural equation model test was conducted based on the three-year longitudinal study. The results were as follows. First, bone age in boys and girls (1st~3rd grade) has a direct effect on the change of body size, but it does not affect the change of physical strength. Second, the bone age of the senior male students(4~6 grade) gave a direct effect on the change of physique, 50m running, and sit-up. On the other hand, it gave an indirect effect on push-ups, sitting basketball throws, and standing long jump. Third, the bone age of the female students(grades 4~6) affected directly on body size change, sit-up, side step and indirect effect on 50m running, half squat jump, and standing long jump. These results indicated that the evaluation of the bone age of the subjects should be included in the exercise ability evaluation items for the male and female students in elementary school over the fourth grade in relation to the myofunction.

  • The selection of the maxillary anterior artificial teeth is made primarily for esthetics and they must be in harmony with the surrounding oral environment. However the selection of artificial teeth is based on the large degree of subjective judgement or the dentists, therefore, this is one of the most unscientific processes. This study was performed to determine clinically whether there is correlation among the width of the maxillary central incisor(WMCI), the intercanine distance (ICD) the facial width(FW), and the interalar nasal width(IAW) in Korean adults, and to provide the selection standards for the maxillary anterior artificial teeth. The casts were obtained from 91 undergraduate dental students(49 males and 42 females) with Angle's class I occlusion presenting well-arranged intact anterior teeth. The WMCI and ICD were measured on the casts with a vernier calipers($Miltex^{(R)}$, Germany). The photographic procedures under standardized conditions were performed to record each subject's frontal face using digital camera($Olympus^{(R)}$, C-2500L, Japan). The FW and IAW were measured with image analyzer($Image-Pro^{(R)}$ PLUS. media cybermetrics. USA). The results were obtained as follows : 1. The mean WMCI was $8.11{\pm}0.67mm$, ICD was $37.88{\pm}2.15mm$, FW was $141.29{\pm}5.84mm$. and IAW was $37.85{\pm}2.29 mm$. 2. The ratios of FW/WMCI, FW/ICD, IAW/ICD were 17.4, 3.7, 1.0 respectively. 3. All measurements(WMCI, ICD, FW, and IAW) of male group were longer than those of female group significantly in Student's t-test(p<0.01). 4. There was significant correlation between WMCI, ICD, FW, and IAW in Pearson's correlation analysis(p<0.01). 5, The relationship between IAW and ICD shows the strongest correlation among six combinations in linear regression analysis($R^2$=0.753, Y=7.046+0.815X). The FW and IAW could be very reliable guides for the selection of the maxillary anterior artificial teeth.

  • The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate how college students' adjustment (CSA) affects their career decision (CD), based on analyses of the relationship between college students' adjustment and their career decision. For the purpose of articulation of the relationship, this study implemented factor analysis to find out the sub-factors of CSA and those of CD and developed conceptual frameworks for CSA and CD. As results, this study reveals that, at first male students had higher scores in the affective adjustment scale and the olders and the higher graders had higher scores than the youngers and the lowers. Secondly, freshmen showed higher scores in relation to the career decision withholding factor. With regard to students' regret for career decision, 19 to 20 year-old-students demonstrated higher scores. Thirdly, students had lower scores in the career decision withholding factor and in the factor of regret for career decision when they had higher scores in social adjustment. Students scored higher in affective adjustment they scored lower in regret for career decision. Also, they scored higher in the factor of career decision stability when they had higher scored in the factor for personal relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high voltage pulsed current stimulation (HVPCS) on the healing rate of a dermal wound in a rat. We also determined the mechanism of promoting healing by HVPCS. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two group; HVPCS group (n=10) and control group (n=10). The HVPCS rats received electrical stimulation with a current intensity of 50 V at 100 pps for a duration of 30 minutes, while the control group was given the same treatment without electricity for a week. The biopsy specimens were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin and stained with Masson's trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The fibroblasts and collagen density were counted using a light microscope and computerized image analysis system and calculated as the density and the percent. A Student t-test showed a significantly higher wound healing rate of the HVPCS group than control (t=-4.161, p<0.001). The fibroblasts in the HVPCS group were higher than in the control group (t=-4.921, p<0.001). The density of collagen in the HVPCS group was also higher than in the control group (t=-4.367, p<0.001). These results indicate that the HVPCS accelerated the rate of healing in dermal wound, and increased fibroblasts and collagen density in the regenerative dermis. These findings suggest that the HVPCS may activate fibroblasts by alteration of the electrical environment, and it may increase collagen synthesis in the regenerative dermal wound.
