Effects of Self-Criticism on Social Anxiety among College Students: Focus on Moderating Effects of Self-Foriveness (대학생의 자기비난이 사회불안에 미치는 영향: 자기용서의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the moderating effect of self-forgiveness on the relationship between self-criticism and social anxiety among male and female college students. This study included 441 college students (211 male and 230 female students) with an average age of 22.2. Pearson correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. As a result, the moderating effect of self-forgiveness on the relationship between self-criticism and social anxiety was significant for male students. A higher level of self-criticism tended to result in a higher level of social anxiety that was strengthened in the group of lower level of self-forgiveness versus a tendency for self-criticism to increase male social anxiety was weaker in the group with a higher level of self-forgiveness. However, the moderating effect of self-forgiveness was not significant in female students and only the main effect of self-criticism on social anxiety was significant. The results provide a basis to understand the psychological processes of social anxiety in college students. The results suggest the necessity to intervene and strengthen self-forgiveness as a protective factor to alleviate the negative effects of self-blame on social anxiety in male college students.

A Study on Nutrient Intake of College Students (대학생의 영양섭취 실태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this survey was to investigate the nutrient intake of college students. This survey was carried out through questionnaires, and the subjects were 498 male and 151 female students at Inha University. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Average height of male and female students were 173.0cm, 160.5cm and the average weight of those were 64.5kg, 49.7kg respectively. 2) Most nutrients were intaken properly but some were under % of RDA. For the male students, the average intake of calorie(91.5%) vitamin A(55.9%) vitamin B1(96.8%) vitamin B2(88.0%) and Ca(96.5%) were lower than RDA. For the female students the average intake of calorie(94.1%) vitamin A(64.6%) Ca(90.3%) and Fe(71.0%) were lower than RDA. 3) The ratio of percent calorie of carbohydrate : protein :fat from total calories in male was 60:16:24 and that of female was 60:17:23 The percent calorie of carbohydrate from total calorie was decreased and taht of fat from total calories was increased compared to the results of previous study.

College Students′ Perception of Emotional Tie with their Parents and Attitudes toward Parent Caregiving (대학생 자녀가 지각한 부모와의 정서적 관계와 부모 부양 의식)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variables which account for college students' attitudes toward parent caregiving. The subjects or this research were 204 students(male:98, female:106) who were currently enrolled at three coeducational universities and one women's university located in the metropolitan area. The instruments used for this study were Attachment and Conflict Scale by Song(1986) and Im(1988), and Parent Caregiving Attitudes Scale by Shin(1993). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson's correlations and stepwise multiple regression. The major results of this study were as follows: First, it turned out that a significant gender difference in attitudes toward parent caregiving exists. Female college students had more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving than male college students. Second, the variables explaining college students'attitudes toward parent caregiving were the extent of attachment with their parents and the experience of cohabitation with their grandparents. The stronger male and female students had attachment with their parents, the more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving they had. In addition, male college students without an experience of cohabitation with their grandparents reported more positive attitudes toward parent caregiving.

Research on Physical Characteristics of Chinese College Students of Different Physical Activity Levels

  • Through a investigation of the physical activity status of 1794 undergraduates who were non-sports majors from freshman to senior in Jiangxi Normal University, to analyze physical fitness status of college students with different physical activity levels. The results showed that in physical activity, high-intensity physical activity of male was higher than female, while medium-intensity and low-intensity (insufficient) physical activity of female was higher than male. College students' high-intensity physical activity group's physical test scores were better than the medium-intensity physical activity group, and the medium-intensity physical activity group was superior to the low physical activity group. In terms of physical fitness, among the test indicators of body shape and physiological function, the vital capacity and body mass index of male and female were ranked at a pass level. In the physical fitness test indicators, the performance of college students' endurance qualities was better while the overall performance of strength qualities was lower. The overall fitness of college students was ranked at a pass level, and the physical test scores of female were better than male.

Correlations among Life Stress, Dietary Behaviors and Food Choice of College Students (일부 지역 대학생의 생활 스트레스, 식행동, 식품 선택에 관한 상관성 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate stress levels, dietary behaviors and food choices, and their correlations in college students. General characteristic stress scores, using a stress test, and the dietary behaviors and food choices of subjects under stress were measured in 358 subjects (185 males and 173 female). The mean total stress scores of the male and female students were $67.91{\pm}44.85$ and $85.62{\pm}48.91$, respectively. Female students were more stressed than males in relation to family, value, future, friends, and study related factors. There were gender differences in the food intake and frequency of eating sweet things when under stress. Stress increased the food intake and frequency of eating sweet things in female students. Especially, stress factors, such as value, economic, future, friends and study problems increased the food intake of female students. Female students preferred sweet tasting items; whereas, male students preferred hot tasting items when under stress. These results show the effect of life stresses on the dietary behaviors and food choices of college students. Stress not only increased energy consumption in certain individuals, but also changed their food choices. Therefore, education with regard to nutrition is necessary if college students are to practice good eating habits for the correct management of life stresses.

Regional Differences in Dietary Supplement Use and Related Factors among College Students Participating in Nutritional Education Programs via the Internet (대학생의 특수영양 및 건강보조식품의 성별, 지역별 섭취실태 및 섭취요인에 관한 연구 -인터넷 영양교육 참여 대학생을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the regional 야fferences in dietary supplement use and related factors among college students participating in nutritional education programs via the internet. The subjects in this study were 797 college students (male: 518, female: 279). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire about dietary supplement use, demographic characteristics, health-related lifestyles, nutrient intake, and data were collected via the internet and by mail. Dietary supplements were taken by 82.2% of subjects (males: 76.3%, females: 85.3%). There was a significant regional difference in supplement use (p<0.01). The supplements, used most frequent by male students in the Seoul and Incheon areas were lactic acid beverages and gagogi, in that order. Male students in the Kyunggi area used gagogi and lactic acid beverages in that order. Lactic acid beverages and Chinese medicine were used most frequently by male students in the Chungcheong area. Male students in the Kyungsang area used lactic acid beverages and water-soluble vitamins, in that order. Male students in Seoul and Kyungsang areas showed significantly higher percentage of keep on taking supplements compared to other areas (p<0.05). Both male and female students in the Seoul area had more frequent medical examinations, in comparison to students in other areas (p<0.05). Male students in the Kyungsang and Seoul areas took significantly more calcium (p<0.05) and iron (p<0.05), in comparison to students in other areas. Female students id the Kyunsang area took significantly more Vitamin A, phosphorous and iron (p<0.05), while those in the Seoul area took significantly more Vitamin C (p <0.01) and calcium (p<0.05) . Male students in the Chungcheong area took significantly less seaweed, in comparison to students in other areas (p<0.05) . Male students in the Seoul area had the highest amount of animal fat and oil, while those in the Incheon area ate the lowest amount of animal oil and fat (p<0.05). Female students in the Kyunggi area ate the highest amount of fruit, while those in the Incheon area ate the lowest amount of fruit (p< 0.05) , Female students in the Incheon area ate the highest amount of seaweed, while those in the Kyunggi area ate the lowest amount of seaweed (p<0.01). Therefore, it can be concluded that it is necessary to develop dietary supplements to optimize the nutritional status of college students in different areas of Korea.

Comparison of Preference for Convenience and Dietary Attitude in College Students by Sex in Seoul and Kyunggi-do Area (일부 남.녀 대학생들의 편의식에 대한 기호도와 식태도에 관한 비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate preference for convenience food and dietary attitude in college students in Seoul and Kyunggi-do area. This study used a questionnaires as instrument tool. Thequestionnaire consisted of socio-demographic characteristics of the subjects, the valuation of preference for convenience, the concern of nutrition, and the dietary attitude. The subject were 199 males and 137 females. The mean age of subjects was 22.4$\pm$2.3year. The results have been summarized as follows Male students preferred more convenience food than females. Male students liked chicken, ice cream, ramyeon, pizza·hamburgerandfemalestudentslikedchicken,pizza, ice cream, ramyeon·hamburger. The kinds of convenience foods for a substitute meal were ramyeon, hamburger, bread, potato in male group and female group had frequently ramyeon, hamburger, bread, rice cake for a substitute meal. Male students were more likely to eat ramyeon (p<0.01) and purchased sabalmyeon The subjects used to purchase sabalmyeon as main convenience food at convenient store The score of preference for convenience food in male group was higher than female group. The score of attitude toward balanced diet in female group was higher than male group(p<0.01). In scores of concern for nutrition information, balanced diet, and nutrition knowledge, Female group had higher scores of concern for nutrition information, balanced diet, and nutrition knowledge than that of male group (p<0.01).There was no significant difference in the degree of preference for packing types, however, Male group tended to prefer more micro wave type than female group. The persons to affect the consumption of convenience food were friends. There was no significant difference in the time of purchase convenience food, however, Male tended to purchase convenience food at the time of snack than female group. As a results, proper nutritional education and qualitative development of convenience food are required in order to improve the consuming attitude of consumers and their preference for convenience food.

Nutritional Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior of College Students in Seoul and Kyunggido Area (서울 및 경기도 일부 지역 대학생의 식생활 관련 지식과 태도 및 행동에 관한 실태조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey several aspects of food-related knowledge, attitude and behavior of college students. Seven hundred male and female students in Seoul and Kyunggi-do area were randomly selected. And self-administered questionnaires were used. It was consisted of weight concern, nutritional knowledge, meal frequency, preference of snacks and psychological aspects of eating behaviors. The results were as followes: 1. The 66.5% of males and 87.9% of females were concerned about weight control. While 42% of male respondents wanted weight gain and 43% weight loss, most of female respondents wanted to lose weight. 2. The score of nutritional knowledge of males was significantly lower than the score of females (p<0.01). 3. The meal frequency was 3.4 times a day for male students and 3.6 for female students. But males showed higher frequency rates in three regular meals and females showed higher rates in snacking. Both male and female students considered that supper was the most important meal of the day and skipped breakfast frequently. 4. Fruits, beverage and milk were favorite snacking items for college students. But there were some differences in selection of food items by snacking time. Carbonated drinks and coffee were frequently selected by morning male and female snackers. Noodles and cookies were preferred by males and cookies were preferred by females as afternoon snack. Fruits were most often preferred by both males and females in the evening. 5. Physical tiredness and/or psychological factors were observed to influence the amount of food intake. After increase of food intake, male students felt more comfortable than female students who were afraid of their weight gain.

Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Attitudes, and Dietary Behaviors by Gender of High School Students in Incheon (인천지역 일부 고등학생의 성별에 따른 영양지식, 식태도 및 식행동에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behaviors among high school students by gender. The subjects were 275 students (127 male, 148 female) in Incheon metropolitan area. Self-administered questionnaires consisted of general characteristics and anthropometric data, nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behaviors. The average score of nutrition knowledge was significantly higher in female subjects (9.4) compared to male subjects (8.2) (p<0.01). Male subjects had a higher score for dietary attitudes than female subjects (p<0.001). Frequency of meals was significantly higher in male subjects compared to female subjects (p<0.05). Duration of meal time in male subjects was significantly higher ('5-10 minutes') compared to female subjects (p<0.001). Unbalanced diet was significantly higher in female subjects (66.3%) compared to male subjects (48.9%) (p<0.01). Male subjects showed significantly higher consumption frequency of 'dairy' (p<0.001) and 'beans' (p<0.001) compared to female subjects. For snack consumption, male subjects showed higher consumption frequency of 'nuts' (p<0.001), 'soda' (p<0.05), 'fast foods' (p<0.001), and 'ramyeon' (p<0.01), but lower consumption frequency of 'biscuits and bakery' (p<0.01) compared to female subjects. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a systemic nutrition education program for high school students by gender.

Differences in Perception of Image Words and Perception Dimension of Desired Image according to Sex Variable for College Students in a School Context (학교 상황에서 대학생의 성별에 따른 이미지 용어 지각 및 추구 이미지 지각 차원 차이)

  • This study was intended to identify the differences in perception of image words and perception dimension of desired image according to sex variable for college students in a school context. Data were collected by questionnaires distributed to 443 college students from August to September of 2000. After eliminating incomplete questionnaires, 396 were analyzed. As results of factor analysis, 7 desired image factors were determined for male and female, respectively. On the basis of these results, major perception differences were identified according to sex variable. Differently-perceived image words were as fellows: For intellectual image, male relates it with sporty while female relates it with graceful; for masculine image, male relates it with mature while female relates it with sporty; and for feminine image, male relates it with sexy and graceful while female relates it modest, pure, and cute. Multidimensional scaling was employed to determine the perception dimension of desired image. Two dimensions were accepted to interpret the results for both sex, respectively. 'Feminine-masculine' and 'conspicuous-plain' were criteria for male students, while 'unnatural-natural' and 'feminine-masculine' were criteria for female students.
