We present a set of fiducial sequences of horizontal-branch stars in bright Galactic globular clusters, which have previously been observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive fiducial lines on color-magnitude diagrams in multiple color indices (g - r, g - i, g - z, and u - g), after rejecting foreground and background objects as well as RR Lyrae variables utilizing these color indices. We compare our fiducial sequences with model predictions from Yonsei-Yale evolutionary tracks and BaSel spectral libraries, and find a satisfactory agreement between them in terms of their color-magnitude relations, except in u - g. We also compare theoretical models to color-magnitude diagrams of two open clusters (M67 and NGC 6791). Based on our best available cluster distance and reddening, we find that the mass of red clump (RC) stars in NGC 6791 is about a factor of two smaller than an earlier estimate from the application of asteroseismic scaling relations for solar-like oscillations. The smaller RC mass implies an enhanced mass loss along the red giant branch, which is in accordance with other compelling evidences found in this metal-rich system. Our estimated luminosity of RC stars in NGC 6791 is about 0.2 mag fainter than in earlier investigations based on solar-metallicity calibrations, and results in ~10% reduction in the RC-based distance estimation, when applied to metal-rich systems such as in the Galactic bulge.
Shock vibrations are usually experienced in vehicles excited by impulsive input, such as bumps. The frequency weighting functions of the current standards in ISO 2631 and BS 6841 are to help objectively predict the amount of discomfort of stationary vibration. This experimental study was designed to develop frequency weighting shape for shock vibration having various fundamental frequencies from 0.5 to 16Hz. The specks were produced from the response of single. degree-of-freedom model to a half-sine force input. Fifteen subjects used the magnitude estimation method to judge the discomfort of vertical shock vibration generated on the rigid seat mounted on the simulator. The magnitudes of the shocks, expressed in terms of both peak-to-peak value and un-weighted vibration dose values (VDVs) , were correlated with magnitude estimates of the discomfort. The frequency weighting shapes from the correlation were developed and investigated having nonlinearity due to the magnitude of the shock.
An experimental assessment on the dynamic behavior of saturated sand which can consider the irregular characteristics of earthquakes was proposed. The equivalent uniform stress concept presented by Seed and Idriss has been applied to evaluate the liquefaction resistance strength to simplify earthquake loading. However, it was known that the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can't exactly mirror the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. In this study, estimation of the criterion of the liquefaction resistance strength was determined by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, relationships between excess pore water pressure and the earthquake characteristics such as magnitude or duration were determined. Magnitude scaling factors to determine the soil liquefaction resistance strength in seismic design were also proposed.
We present our estimate of pole shift caused by the recent 31 largest earthquakes of magnitude over 8.0. After reviewing theory of perturbation in the Earth's rotation, each co-seismic as well as post-seismic pole shifts by the earthquakes are acquired and illustrated. A total co-seismic excitation due to these earthquakes is ($x_1$, $x_2$)=(-3.35, 5.89) milliarcsec, which increased about twice the initial estimation when the post-seismic deformation is considered. The single largest co-seismic excitation by 2011 Japan earthquake was ($x_1$, $x_2$)=(-2.06, 2.36) milliarcsec, which corresponds to 9.7 cm pole shift on the surface of the Earth.
Self-tuning control algorithms for an input-amplitude constrained system are developed and implemented. Magnitude of control input for small motors is generally restricted to narrow bound due to actuator saturation. The gain-adjusted control algorithm and the bounded-gain control algorithm proposed in this study yield smoother control input variations within the magnitude constraints comparing with the existing Clarke's suboptimal control algorithm. In the gain-adjusted control algorithm, the feedforward gain is adjusted using maximum gain, while in the bounded-gain control algorithm, the feedforward gain is bounded using weighting factor. For the DC servo motor control, the system performances of the proposed algorithms are compared with those of the existing algorithm by computer simulation and experiment. It is shown that the input variations of the proposed algorithms are smoother as compared with the existing algorithm.
In the present work, a formula for plate deformation produced by line heating, in terms of process parameters such as heat input and plate dimensions, is developed analytically using an eigenstrain concept. The residual deformation that was due to thermal process was depends on the magnitude and region of plastic strains at heating zone. The magnitude of plastic strains was determined by disk model and its region was calculated using the Rosenthal"s solution. The vertical displacement of the plate was analyzed by using an infinite laminated plate theory to consider a cuboidal inclusion with an eigenstrain. Comparison of the calculated results and experimental data shows the accuracy and validity of proposed method.thod.
This paper discusses the dependence of the convergence rate on the acoustic error path in these popular algorithms and introduces new algorithms which increase the convergence region regardless of the time-delay in the acoustic error path. We also Propose a novel control algorithm (AFC/CAFC) for tonal noise cancellation. The proposed algorithm estimates the magnitude and phase of the tonal noise. The algorithm uses the steepest descent method for the phase/magnitude estimation. Performances of tile CAFC algorithm are presented in comparison with those by the AFC algorithm based on computer simulations and experiments.
This study aims for the optimization of process conditions in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor system with a circulating molten salt bath, in which partial oxidation of propylene to acrolein takes place. Two-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous model is adopted with estimation of suitable parameters and its validity is corroborated by comparing simulation result with experimental data. The temperature of the molten salt and the feed composition are found to exercise significant influence on the yield of acrolein and the magnitude of hot spot. The temperature of the molten salt is usually kept constant. This study, however, suggests that the temperature of the molten salt must be axially adjusted so that the abrupt peak of hot spot should not appear near the reactor entrance. The yield of acrolein is maximized and the position and the magnitude of hot spot are optimized by the method of the iterative dynamic programming (IDP).
