  • Natural magnetic fields are attenuated by electrically conductive water. For that reason, marine magnetotelluric surveys have collected data at long periods (1000-100 000 s). The mantle structure has been the main target of seafloor magnetotelluric measurements. To ascertain crustal structure, however, electromagnetic data at shorter periods are important, e.g. in investigations of megathrust earthquake zones, or in natural resource surveys. To investigate of the former, for example, electromagnetic data for periods of less than 1000 s are necessary. Because no suitable ocean bottom electromagnetometer (OBEM) has been available, we have developed a small OBEM and ocean bottom electrometer (OBE) system with a high sample rate, which has an arm-folding mechanism to facilitate assembly and recovering operations. For magnetic observation, we used a fluxgate sensor. Field observations were undertaken to evaluate the field performance of our instruments. All instruments were recovered and their electromagnetic data were obtained. Results of the first experiment show that our system functioned well throughout operations and observations. Results of other field experiments off Tottori support the claim that the electromagnetic data obtained using the new OBEM and OBE system are of sufficient quality for the survey target. These results suggest that this device removes all instrumental obstacles to measurement of electromagnetic fields on the seafloor.

  • Magnetic nanoparticles can be used for a variety of biomedical applications. They can be used in the targeted delivery of therapeutic agents in vivo, in the hyperthermic treatment of cancers. in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging as contrast agents and in the biomagnetic separations of biomolecules. We have synthesized magnetite $(Fe_3O_4)$ nanoparticles using chemical coprecipitation technique with sodium oleate as surfactant. Nanoparticle size can be varied from 2 to 8nm by controlling the sodium oleate concentration. Magnetite phase nanoparticles could be observed from X-ray diffraction. Magnetic colloid suspensions containing particles with sodium oleate and chitosan have been prepared. Nanoparticles, both oleate-coated and chitosan-coated, have been characterized by several techniques. Atomic farce microscope (AFM) was used to image the coated nanoparticles. Magnetic hysteresis measurement were performed using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer at room temperature to investigate the magnetic properties of the magnetite nanoparticles. The SQUID measurements revealed superparamagnetism of nanoparticles.

  • $Co_{84}Hf_{16}$ (1300$\AA$, 2150$\AA$) thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering method. To investigate the uniaxial anisotrpy of the sample, the saturation and effective magnetization of the thin films were measured by VSM and FMR, respectively. The spectroscopic splitting g factor were estimated from the ferromagnetic resonance curves. For 1300$\AA$, 2150$\AA$, the effective magnetization was measured at the temperatures from T=77K to T=300K. The results were analyzed in terms of Bloch's law $M_s(T)=M_s(0)(1BT^{3/2}CT^{5/2}$. The Bloch coefficient B and C were determined by fitting. $M_{eff}(0)$ was obtained by extrapolating $M_{eff}$ to 0 K. From this result, the spinwave stiffness constants D was also determined and the exchange stiffness constants $A_{eff}$ were calculated by Kittel's resonance conditions.

  • The crystallographic and magnetic properties of the sample F $e_{0.8}$ $Co_{0.18}$(BN)$_{0.02}$ synthesized by microwave arc-melting with the maximum power of 3.5 kW have been studied by the methods of an X-ray diffraction and the measurement of the magnetic hysteresis using the vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. The samples were prepared in a form of pellet pressed under the pressure of 9,000 N/c $m^2$, rolled coldly, and treated with the different temperatures. The X-ray diffraction pattern of pelleted sample shows that the crystal structure of the sample is bcc as same as that of Fe with a good uniformity. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that a residual stress, which exists in the sample, is eliminated by final 90$0^{\circ}C$ annealing. As rolling rate and heat treatment temperature increases, the saturation magnetization and the remanence of the samples increase whereas the coercivity of the samples shows decrease. Also the saturation magnetization and the remanence of the samples were affected by rolling rate and rolling direction than heat treatment temperature, but the coercivity of the samples was affected by rolling rate and direction as well as heat treatment temperature. This means that a domain wall motion is easy due to elimination of a residual stress and an inclusion which exists in the sample by rolling and heat treatment and a local induced-magnetization easy axis was also formed to parallel to the rolling direction due to creation of the like-atom pairs across the slip plane by rolling......

  • In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based gait analysis system to measure and analyze lower-limb movements. We developed an integral AHRS(Attitude Heading Reference System) using a combination of rate gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer sensor signals. Several AHRS modules mounted on segments of the patient's body provide the quaternions representing the patient segments's orientation in space. And a method is also proposed for calculating three-dimensional inter-segment joint angle which is an important bio-mechanical measure for a variety of applications related to rehabilitation. To evaluate the performance of our AHRS module, the Vicon motion capture system, which offers millimeter resolution of 3D spatial displacements and orientations, is used as a reference. The evaluation resulted in a RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of 1.08 and 1.72 degree in yaw and pitch angle. In order to evaluate the performance of our the gait analysis system, we compared the joint angle for the hip, knee and ankle with those provided by Vicon system. The result shows that our system will provide an in-depth insight into the effectiveness, appropriate level of care, and feedback of the rehabilitation process by performing real-time limb or gait analysis during the post-stroke recovery.

  • In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based gait distance measurement system using accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. To minimize offset and gain error of inertial sensors, we performed the calibration using the self-made calibration jig with 9 degrees of freedom. For measuring accurate gait distance, we used gradient descent algorithm to remove gravity error and used analysis of gait pattern to remove drift error. Finally, we measured a gait distance by double-integration of the error-removed acceleration data. To evaluate the performance of our system, we walked 10m in a straight line indoors to observe the improvement of removing error which compared un-calibrated to calibrated data. Also, the gait distance measured by the system was compared to the measurement of the Vicon motion capture system. The evaluation resulted in the improvement of $31.4{\pm}14.38%$(mean${\pm}$S.D.), $78.64{\pm}10.84%$ and $69.71{\pm}26.25%$ for x, y and z axis, respectively when walked in a straight line, and a root mean square error of 0.10m, 0.16m, and 0.12m for x, y and z axis, respectively when compared to the Vicon motion capture system.

  • A quaternary alloy film of $CoCr_{16.2}Pt_{10.8}Ta_4$was investigated for its magnetic properties and c-axis orientation with and without Ti underlayer. Additional elements such as Ta, Pt have been frequently introduced in CoCr alloy film for perpendicular recording as a means of improving magnetic performance. It has been reported that the addition of Pt and Ta in CoCr increase the coercivity and the magnetic isolation of columnar grains, respectively. However, CoCrPtTa perpendicular magnetic layer should be more increased its perpendicular magnetic anisotropy than at present for the application of ultrahigh recording density. The improvement of underlayers and substrate materials is one of the promised schemes to intensify the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In this study, the insertion of Ti underlayer shows the remarkable improvement of c-axis orientation compare with the direct deposition on the bare glass. The mechanism about this effect of Ti underlayer on CoCrPtTa is not to be clarified yet. Meanwhile, it is found that the magnetic domain of CoCrPtTa on 20 nm Ti underlayer has the continuous stripe pattern but the one of CoCrPtTa on 90 nm Ti underlayer shows the discrete mass type from the results of MFM investigation. This phenomenon is to be a distinct evidence that the improvement of perpendicular anisotropy by the adoption of Ti underlayer is originated from the reinforcement of the grain boundary segregation in CoCrPtTa alloy. Moreover, the transition of the M-H hysteresis pattern with the thickness of Ti underlayer indicates that the major contribution of Ti underlayer is not the magnetocrystalline anisotropy but the shape anisotropy due to the formation of uniform columnar grains by the nonmagnetic alloy segregation.

  • We have prepared $MnFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles with polyol method. The crystallographic and magnetic properties were measured by using X-ray diffraction(XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM) and $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The high resolution transmission electron microscope(HRTEM) shows uniform nanoparticle-sizes with $6{\sim}8$ nm. The crystal structure is found to be single-phase cubic spinel with space group of Fd3m. The lattice constant of $MnFe_2O_4$ nanparticles is determined to be $8.418{\pm}0.001{\AA}$. $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectrum of $MnFe_2O_4$ nanparticles at room temperature(RT) shows a superparamagnetic behavior. In VSM analysis, the diagnosis of the superparamagnetic behavior is also shown in hysteresis loop at RT. $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectrum at 4.2K shows that the well developed two sextets are with different hyperfine field $H_{hfA}=498$(A-site) and $H_{hfB}=521$(B-site) kOe.

  • In the summers of 1997 and 1998 and in February of 2000 we made 570 measurements of the ambient geomagnetic field 120 cm above the pavement surface of State Route 130, south of Pahoa, the island of Hawaii using a three-component fluxgate magnetometer. We measured at every 15.2 m (50 feet) interval covering a distance of 6, 310 m (20, 704 ft) where both historic and pre-historic highly magnetic basalt flows underlie. We also collected 197 core samples from eight road cuts, 489 specimens of which were subject to AF demagnetizations at 5 - 10 mT level up to a maximum field of 60 mT. We observed significant inclination anomalies ranging from a minimum of $31^{\circ}$ to a maximum $40^{\circ}$ where a uniform inclination value of $36.7^{\circ}$ (International Geomagnetic Reference Field, IGRF) was expected. Since the mean of the observed inclinations is approximately $35^{\circ}$ we assume that the study area is slightly affected by the magnetic terrain effect to a systematically shallower inclinations for being located in the regionally sloping surface of the southern side of the island (Baag, et al., 1995). We observed inclination anomalies showing wider (spacial) wavelength (160 - 600 m) and higher amplitudes in the historic lava flows area than in the northern pre-historic flows. Our observations imply that preexisting inclination anomalies such as those that we observed would have been interpreted as paleosecular variation (PSV). These inclination anomalies can best be attributed to concealed underground highly magnetic dikes, channel type lava flows, on-and-off hydrothermal activities through fissure-like openings, etc. Both the within- and between-site dispersions of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) are largest (up to ${\pm}7^{\circ}$) above the flows of 1955, while the area of pre-historic flows in the northern part of the study area exhibit the smallest dispersion. Nevertheless, mean inclinations of each historic flow of 1955 and 1790 are almost identical to that of the corresponding present field, whereas mean of NRM (after AF demagnetization) inclinations for each of the four pre-historic lava flow units is twelve to thirteen degrees lower than the present field inclination. We observed three cases of very large inclination variations from within a single flow, the best fitting curves of which are linear, second and third order polynomials each from within a single flow, whereas no present field variations are observed. This phenomena can be attributed to the notion that local magnetic anomalies on the surface of an active volcano are not permanent, but are transient. Therefore we believe that local magnetic anomalies of an active volcano may be constantly modified due to on going subsurface injections and circulations of hot material and also due to wide spacial and temporal distribution of highly magnetic basaltic flows that will constantly modify the topography which will in turn modify the local ambient geomagnetic field (Baag, et al., 1995). Our observations bring into question the general reliability of PSV data inferred from volcanic rocks, because on-going various geologic and geophysical activities associated with active volcano would continuously deflect and modify the ambient geomagnetic field.
