  • In power electronics applications which switching frequency is below audible frequency, the acoustic noise and vibration design of magnetics are as important as the efficiency. In the case of the powder core, which is widely used in grid-connected inverters, many researches have been progressed in terms of efficiency. However, there are only few research have been progressed related with acoustic noise and vibrations. In this paper, the Sendust(Fe-Si-Al) powder core material which has low magnetostriction and low core loss is analyzed in terms of acoustic noise and vibration induced by Maxwell force and magnetostriction. Three building structures such as, rectangular, toroidal, and oval shape are designed for 4kW grid-connected inverter, because magnetic properties and the audible noises of the inductor are varied by magnetic core building structures. The effects of the Maxwell force and magnetostriction behaviors varied with core shapes are analyzed by finite element method and experiments. In addition, experiment results of the inductor efficiency are presented according to core building structures.

  • A double rectangular spiral inductor is fabricated using FeTaN films. The inductor is composed of internal coils sandwiched by magnetic layers. Characteristics of inductor performance are investigated with an emphasis on planarization of magnetic films. In the absence of the planarization process, the grating topology of upper magnetic films over coil arrays degrades the soft magnetic properties and the inductor performance. It also induces a longitudinal magnetic anisotropy with the easy axis aligned to the magnetic flux direction. This alignment prevents the upper magnetic films from contributing to the total induction. Glass bonding is a viable method for achieving a completely planar inductor structure. The planar inductor with glass bonding shows excellent performance : inductance of 1.1 H, Q factor of 7 (at 5 MHz), and the dc current capability up to 100 mA.

  • S $m_{2}$F $e_{17}$ $N_{x}$ film magnets using a S $m_{2}$F $e_{17}$ target were prepared at $N_{2}$ gas atmosphere using a Nd-YAG laser ablation technique. The effect of nitrogen pressure, deposition temperature, pulsation time and film thickness on the structure and magnetic properties of S $m_{2}$F $e_{17}$ $N_{x}$ film were studied. Increasing the nitrogen pressure up to 5 atm. was confirmed to lead the formation of complete S $m_{2}$F $e_{17}$ $N_{x}$ compound. Optimized magnetic properties with the nitrogenation temperature ranging over 500-53$0^{\circ}C$ could be obtained by extending the nitrogenation time up to 4 hours. Relatively low coercivities of 400~600 Oe were exhibited from the S $m_{2}$F $e_{17}$ $N_{x}$ films having the thickness of 50~100 nm while 4$\pi$ $M_{s}$ of 10~12 kG could be achieved. In-plane anisotropic characteristic, which was the basic goal in this study, was achieved by controlling the nitrogenation parameters.ameters.ers.ameters.

  • We have developed a three-axis configurational in situ SMOKE apparatus by which three-dimensional vector magnetization reversal processes are studied for ultrathin Co films grown on a Pd (111) single crystal in the thickness range of spin-reorientation transition. This study provides a better understanding of magnetization reversal motions with the knowledge of 3 components of magnetization vector at the transition of an easy axis of magnetization from the film normal at 5 ML Co to in-plane at 6 ML Co (ML notes monolayer). For a 5.25 ML Co, it was observed that a slightly canted magnetization vector from the film normal rotated in the film plane under an applied field direction parallel to the film normal.

  • We have demonstrated the fabrication of sub 30 nm MTJ pillars with PMA characteristics. The multi-step IBE process performed at $45^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, using NER resulted in almost vertical side profiles. There deposition on the sidewalls of the NER prevented lateral etching of the resist hard mask allowing vertical MTJ side profile formation without any reduction in the lithographically defined resist lateral dimensions. For the 28nm STT-MTJ pillars, the measured TMR ratio was 13 % with resistance of 1 $k{\Omega}$, which was due to remaining redeposition layers less than 0.1 nm thick. With further optimization in multi-step IBE conditions, it will be possible to fabricate fully operating sub 30 nm perpendicular STT-MTJ structures for application to future non-volatile memories.

  • The nanocrystalline Fe$_{84}$Zr$_{7}$B$_{6}$Cu$_{1}$ $Al_{2}$ alloy was annealed at 450 $^{\circ}C$ and 550 $^{\circ}C$ for l hour to achieve the ultra-soft magnetic properties such as large magnetoimpedence ratio(MIR), the incremental permeability ratio(PR), nearly zero coercivity, zero magnetostriction, etc. The PR and MIR of the sample were measured from 100 kHz to 10 MHz at a cryogenic chamber where the temperature can be varie from 10 K to 300 K. The increment of MIR value is proportional to increasing temperature. The maximum PR values measured at high frequency above 1 MHz remain almost same despite of the temperature variation from 10 K to 300 K except the sharpness in PR curves. However, the maximum PR values measured below 1 MHz show drastic increment at above 150K due to thermal activation of magnetic domains.s.s.

  • Multi-layer film of $MgO/(FePt-B)_{50nm}/ MgO$ was deposited on Si(100) substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The boron chips were uniformly placed oil tile FePt target. The boron content of thin film was found to be about 5, 10, 15, 25 and $33 at\%$ by using a CAMECA SX-51 wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDX). It is observed that X-ray diffraction patterns of FePt-B film by post-annealing exhibited a transformation from disordered fcc structure to ordered $Ll_0$ phase with fct structure from around $400^{\circ}C$. By adding B, annealing temperature for ordering is about $200^{\circ}C$ lower than that of pure FePt. This remarkable decrease of the annealing temperature is closely related to the high diffusivities of Fe and Pt associated with the defects caused by movements of B atoms. The maximum coercivity(Hc) for FePt films was found to be ${\~}$13 kOe after annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1hr.

  • The design and performance analysis of a reduced rating autotransformer based thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is carried out for feeding a vector controlled induction motor drive (VCIMD). The configuration of the proposed autotransformer consists of only two single phase transformers, with their windings connected in a T-shape, resulting in simplicity in design, manufacturing and in a reduction in magnetics rating. The design procedure of the autotransformer along with the newly designed interphase transformer is presented. The proposed configuration has flexibility in varying the transformer output voltage ratios as required. The design of the autotransformer can be modified for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. The proposed thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is capable of suppressing less than $29^{th}$ harmonics in the supply current. The power factor is also improved to near unity in the wide operating range of the drive. A comparison of different power quality indices at AC mains and DC bus is demonstrated in a conventional 6-pulse AC-DC converter and the proposed AC-DC converter feeding a VCIMD. A laboratory prototype of the proposed autotransformer based 30-pulse AC-DC converter was developed with test results validating the proposed design and system.
