  • Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) were manufactured by incorporation of magnetic responsible powder (MRP) into natural rubber and silicone rubber. The optimum loading amounts of MRP was 30 vol.% and the natural rubber based MRE (NR-MRE) showed better mechanical property than that of silicone rubber based MRE (S-MRE). However, the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE, measured by Self-modified Electromagnet Applied Fast Fourier Transform Analyser (SEFFTA), was higher than that of NR-MRE. The modulus shift ratio caused by NR-MRE was 10%, while the modulus shift ratio caused by S-MRE was 35.7%. The modulus shift ratio could be improved by orienting the magnetic direction of MRP before crosslinking the MRE. The degree of orientation of MRP was analyzed using SEM.

  • The structural, electrical and magnetic properties were investigated for the high-Tc superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$, where x was 0.13. The results of temperature dependence of the resistivity and the magnetization in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.87}$ whose structure and phase are confirmed by arialysis of X-ray powder diffraction pattern have been reported. A very sharp superconductivity transition appears at 92K in the specimen whose chemical composition is determined from redox titration, strongly suggesting that this specimen consists of a single-phase superconductor. From the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, magnetization curves, levitation and resistance measurements, it is suggested that the observed superconductivity is bulk property in nature and that the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.87}$ phase is responsible for the superconductivity of the present reproducible specimen.

  • Recently, it has been found that mechanical alloying (MA) facilitates the nanocomposites formation of metal-metal oxide systems through solid-state reduction during ball milling. In this work, we studied the MA effect of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$-M (M = Al, Ti) systems, where pure metals are used as reducing agents. It is found that composite powders in which $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ and TiO$_{2}$ are dispersed in $\alpha$-Fe matrix with nano-sized grains are obtained by mechanical alloying of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ with Al and Ti for 25 and 75 hours, respectively. It is suggested that the large negative heat associated with the chemical reduction of magnetite by aluminum is responsible for the shorter MA time for composite powder formation in Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$-Al system. X-ray diffraction results show that the reduction of magnetite by Al and Ti if a relatively simple reaction, involving one intermediate phase of FeAl$_{2}$O$_{4}$ or Fe$_{3}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{10}$. The average grain size of $\alpha$-Fe in Fe-TiO$_{2}$ composite powders is in the range of 30 nm. From magnetic measurement, we can also obtain indirect information about the details of the solid-state reduction process during MA.

  • Amyloid fibrils have long been known to be the well known ${\alpha}$-helix to ${\beta}$-sheet transition characterizing the conversion of cellular to scrapie forms of the prion protein. A very short sequence of Yeast prion-like protein, GNNQQNY (SupN), is responsible for aggregation that induces diseases. KSI-fused tandem repeats of SupN vector are constructed and used to express SupN peptide in Escherichia coli (E.Coli). A method for a production, purification, and cleavage of tandem repeats of recombinant isotopically enriched SupN in E. coli is described. This method yields as much as 20 mg/L of isotope-enriched fusion proteins in minimal media. Synthetic SupN peptides and $^{13}C$ Gly labeled SupN peptides are studied by Congo Red staining, Birefringence and transmission electron microscopy to characterize amyloid fibril formation. To get a better understanding of aggregation-structure relationship of 7 residues of Yeast prion-like protein, the change of a conformational structure will be studied by $^{13}C$ solid-state nmr spectroscopy as powder of both amorphous and fibrillar forms.
