  • In order to improve the read-out signal waveform, a shielded magnetoresistive (SMR) head has been designed and studied by applying the transmission-line model. The bias and signal field distribution, the voltage output, the harmonic output signal and resistance value of MR element are simulated as functions of bias current and recording displacement. The results show that the SMR head has good linear character with respect to the medium recording signal in high recording frequency of about 2.5 MHz. The amplitude and waveform of reroduction signal have been obviously improved. The saturation effect on the symmetry and amplitude of reproducing output have also been analyzed.

  • In this paper, perpendicular magnetic recording system which consists of a single pole head and a double layer medium has been analyzed by using 2D-finite element method and preisach model for describing hysteresis characteristics. To verify the validity of this method, we compare the calculated magnetic field intensity which is above the isolated transition of magnetization with scaled up experimental data published in reference [7]. The results show good agreements within 7% error bounds and it is therefore concluded that this method will be very useful to analyze perpendicularmagnetic recording system with hysteresis characteristics.

  • Misalignment of recording head position results in inter-track interference (ITI), which is a primary factor limiting radial(track) density in current digital magnetic channels. This paper proposes a multi- channel adaptive PRML for digital high-density recording channels, and compares it with the conventional single-channel PRML in the presence of ITI for the per- formance evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed method removes ITI effectively when heal-misalignment occurs, then improving its performance significantly as compared with the single- channel PRML. As a result, it is confirmed that multi-channel adaptive PRML is well suited for high-density recording in digital magnetic channels.

  • An image enhancement method using modified anisotropic diffusion filter is proposed in this paper. It employs sensor noise estimation and scale space methods based on the minimum reliable scale. Then the anisotropic diffusion filter is modified by the calculated critical value function and local gradient. Through simulation, it is verified that the proposed algorithm has the capability of little or no noise amplification in homogenous region as well as superior edge enhancement.

  • Magnetic hard disk drive is continually being pushed to reduce head-disk spacing for higher recording densities. The current minimum spacing between the air-bearing slider and disk has been reduced to under 15 nm. In this work, it was investigated if flying height could be lowered under the height of laser bumps. With the reduction of the spinning speed, the flying height was decreased under the height of laser bumps. When a head swept between landing zone and data zone, the head-disk impact was monitored using AE and friction signals. It is demonstrated that magnetic hard disk drive could be operated without tribological failures under the height of laser bumps.
