  • The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional laminar flow past a circular cylinder in an aligned magnetic field using the spectral method. Numerical simulations are performed for flow fields with Re=100 and 200 in the range of 0$\leq$N$\leq$10, where Ν is the Stuart number that is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertial force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow quantities on the cylinder surface at different Stuart numbers. It is shown that the vortex shedding can be controlled by the magnetic force representing the Stuart number. As Ν increases, the vortex shedding becomes weaker, resulting in drag reduction whose magnitude is the largest at a critical value. In addition, as the magnetic force increases, the lift amplitude decreases, reaching zero at the critical number.

  • Magnetic path direction in the back-iron of a linear induction motor(LIM) is perpendicular to that of the lift-magnet of the MAGLEV which is recently developing in KOREA. In general the back-iron is isolated magnetically in conventional rail in order to eliminate the thrust dependency of the LIM on the lift force. However the magnetic isolation causes some increase in construction and management cost. So a unit-type rail system is considered, which the magnetic circuit of the back-iron is sharing that of the lift-magnet. In this paper 3-dimensional analysis for the lift-magnet is carried out using finite element method. As a result, a new shape of the unit-type rail is presented to reduce the magnetic dependency between thrust force and lift force. Also the distribution of magnetic flux density vectors and current-lift force characteristics are presented.

  • An experimental study is presented for the characteristics of the high temperature superconductor as an application of the repulsive type magnetic bearing. A ring shaped YBCO type superconductor and Neodium permanent magnets are employed for the experiment. For the case of field cooling, superconductor shows strong repulsive force, which is due to the Meissner effect, as the gap between the superconductor and the magnet gets closer. The repulsive force variation with respect to the gap change shows hysterisis characteristics. The area of the loop of the hysterisis curve represents the dissipation of energy, which reveals that the magnetic bearing with superconductor has large damping. The effect of the initial gap and the magnetic flux density on the repulsive force is analyzed experimentally and the static stiffness variation is calculated from the measured repulsive force variation. The relative sliding velocity between the superconductor and the magnet has little effect on the repulsive force which is quite different from the usual sliding element bearing. As the initial gap for the field cooling becomes larger, the maximum repulsive force at the minimum gap increases and approaches to the value for the case of zero field cooling.

  • This study is concerned with the design of a camera iris-shutter device for producing force. The camera iris-shutter with yoke should have a smaller size and a bigger magnetic force than the previous model. Since the induced magnetic force operates shutter movement, the magnetic force maximization for a given input current is an important issue. To achieve the goal, new system is designed by the topology optimization method. The design is refined through the design of experiments to find the detail camera iris shutter design satisfying design constraints.

  • The reduction ratio of the magnetic gear is determined by the ratio of the number of poles between the high-speed permanent magnet layer and the low-speed permanent magnet layer. In general, it is known that the greater the least common multiple of both poles, the smaller the torque ripple called by cogging of the magnetic force generated in the magnetic gear. However, little is known about the effect of the harmonic modulator that filters the magnetic field in the magnetic gear to magnetically couple the high-speed side and the low-speed side except for the number of poles. In this study, torque ripple characteristics according to changes in modulator shape such as opening ratio and tooth thickness are analyzed using a finite element analysis tool.

  • In this paper, the investigation about the elevation control and the formation of the free surface of magnetic fluids is carried out theoretically and experimentally on the basis of magnetic fluids is carried out theoretically and experimentally on the basis of Rosensweig' Ferrohydrodynamic Bernoulli Equation. Governing equations of magnetic fields are solved using the concept of vector potential. While applied magnetic fields are induced by 4$\times$4 electromagnet located under the magnetic fluid, the fee surface of the magnetic fluid is formed the balance of surface force, gravity, pressure difference, magnetic normal pressure and magnetic body force. The results of numerical simulation and experiment show the formation of the free surface of the magnetic fluid. Using PID control, an experiment for the elevation control of the free surface of magnetic fluids is performed.

  • This paper proposes an equipment and an algorithm for modeling the magnetic force of electromagnets in magnetic levitation systems. We assume that the magnetic force model is represented in terms of a 2D lookup table. The 2D lookup table is constructed by applying noncausal filtering and interpolation to data measured by the proposed modeling equipment. The proposed modeling equipment is designed such that it can measure the magnetic force exerted on the levitation object while it changes the voltage applied to the electromagnet and position of the levitation object. The algorithm of making a 2D lookup table has two stages. The data measured by the proposed modeling equipment is smoothed by a noncausal filter and then the 2D lookup table is obtained by interpolating filtered data. The proposed modeling method has advantages of time-saving, model consistency, and chance of automation for mass production. We show the validity of proposed method through control experiments.

  • It was evaluated whether magnetic beads able to add the functionality of environment purification can be employed in processing soil pollutants. In this study, the micro scale magnetic beads containing carboxyl groups were mixed with water and the soil $(<0.025{\cal}mm) filtered through a sieve, and then it was agitated before isolating the magnetic substances by the use of outer magnetic force. The factors considered at this step were the ratio of soil to magnetic beads, ratio of soil to water, size of the tube where the reaction occur, and intensity of the magnetic force. From the separation experiment between soil and magnetic beads, it was concluded that the magnetic beads and water quantity have an impact on the degree of separation, yet the size of the tube and magnetic force does not have a considerable effect upon that in this small-scaled experiment. Through this experiment, the reaction conditions were optimized to achieve $90\~100\%$ of separation. Therefore, it was concluded that when the functionalized magnetic beads is introduced to environmental processing, it is able to be adopted to the soil processing as well as the water processing.

  • The conventional method of magnetic abrasive polishing is not suitable for non-magnetic materials because such polishing is basically possible when magnetic force exists and the magnetic force in non-magnetic materials is very low. The installation of an electromagnet under the working area of a non-magnetic material, which is called second-generation magnetic abrasive polishing in this study, can enhance the magnetic force. Experimental evaluation and optimization of process parameters for polishing magnesium alloy steel was performed by adopting the design of experiments and the response surface method. The results indicated that the intensity of the magnetic force and spindle speed are significant parameters that affect the improvement of surface roughness. A prediction model for the surface roughness of the magnesium alloy steel is developed using the second-order response surface method.

  • The force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K is measured and analyzed numerically. Both values are compared, and the difference between them is discussed. The forces, acting on a superconducting disk (thickness:1[mm], diameter:12[mm]) in an axially-symmetric magnetic field produced by a solenoid or a permanent magnet ring, are measured at 77K. The disk is an YBCO high Tc superconductor. The discrete surface current method(DSCM) is formalized for an axially-symmetric magnetic field. The forces of the superconducting disk in the magnetic field are analyzed using the DSCM, assuming that the disk is a perfect diamagnetic body. When the bottom side of the disk is separated 8[mm] from the top side of the solenoid, and the magnetic field applied on the center of the bottom side of the disk is 96[G], the measured value and the calculated value of the force are 96 and 496[mgf], respectively. The difference between them is caused by a non-perfect diamagnetism of the high Tc superconductor at 77K. It is proposed that a real force acting on high Tc superconductors at 77K can be estimated on the basis of a measured magnetic susceptibility of the high Tc superconductor at 77K and a calculated force of a perfect diamagnetic body.
