Effects of Magnesium Supplement Levels and Periods on Lipid Metabolism and Enzyme Activities in Rats (저단백식이와 마그네슘 결핍식이 섭취시 마그네슘 보충이 흰쥐의 지질대사 및 효소 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of magnesium supplement levels and periods on lipid metabolism in male Sprague-Dawley rats given low protein and magnesium deficient diets. The effect of magnesium supplement levels and periods on lipid metabolism in rats given a low protein and magnesium deficient diet for 2 weeks were investigated. Serum total lipid and triglyceride contents were significantly lower in magnesium supplement group compared with magnesium deficient group. Serum HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio was significantly increased as magnesium supplement level was increased. Liver total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol and phospholipid contents were significantly lower in magnesium supplement group than those in magnesium deficient group. Serum ALP, GOT and GPT activities were significantly decreased in magnesium supplement group compared with magnesium deficient group. In summary, the effect of magnesium supplement on lipid metabolism and enzyme activities were significant and we can see that magnesium supplement level propered to be requirement level(400 mg/kg diet)in the other cases except serum lipid contents.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of magnesium supplement levels and periods on calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus metabolism in male Sprague-Dawley rats given low protein and magnesium deficient diets for 2 weeks. Serum calcium content was significantly lower in the magnesium supplement group than in the magnesium-deficient group, but calcium excretion in urine and feces was significantly increased as magnesium level and period was increased. Increasing the dietary magnesium level and periods raised serum content and excretion of magnesium in urine k feces. Urinary excretion of phosphorus in two week group was significantly lower in the magnesium supplement group than in the magnesium-deficient group. fecal phosphorus excretion in supplement group (Mg 800mg/kg diet) was significantly higher than that of other group. Influence of Compost Recycling and Magnesium Supplement on Physical and Chemical Traits of Animal Manure Compost

  • A series of experiments were performed to study the influence of the following parameters on the physical traits and composition of swine manure compost: (1) addition of magnesium (Mg) at a molar ratio of 1.2 with respect to $PO_4$, and (2) reutilization of compost containing $MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ (magnesium ammonium phosphate, MAP). Three independent batch tests were conducted for replication: batch test I-control (C) and Mg added (T), batch test II-C, T and compost recycle ($T_{R1}$), and batch test III-C, T and compost recycle ($T_{R2}$). Magnesium addition and compost reutilization had no adverse effect on the degradation of organic matter. Reuse of the compost, however, had a clear effect on the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) contents in the final compost. Repeated compost reutilization as a bulking material was resulted in composts rich in N and P. Upon adding the Mg supplement to the composting materials, the ortho-phosphate (OP) to TP ratio decreased due to the MAP crystallization reaction. The decrease in the OP/TP ratio and the increase in the TP content of the compost indicate that water-soluble phosphate is converted into a slow-release phosphate by the formation of crystals during composting. X-ray diffraction analysis of the irregular shaped crystals in the compost indicated that they are MAP crystals and that the crystallization of MAP begins immediately after the addition of the Mg supplement. The Mg addition to composting materials and the reutilization of compost as a bulking material would be a practical means to conserve nutrient content.

The Effects of Dietary $MgSO_4$ Supplement on Serum Stress Hormones Concentrations and Pork Quality in Late Finishing Pigs (출하 전 마그네슘 단기급여가 돼지의 혈중 스트레스 관련 호르몬 함량 및 육질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of MgSO₄ supplement on meat quality and serum stress hormones concentrations in late finishing pigs. Sixty castrated Landrace pigs (average weight±S.D., 106.5±8.9 kg) were assigned to a control diet (without MgSO₄ supplement) and diet with MgSO₄(10 g/kg diet) supplemented. Pigs had free access to diets and water during five-day feeding period. At the end of feeding experiment, pigs were fasted for 16 hours and transported to commercial slaughter plant (30-minute transportation distance). After 2-hour lairage time, pigs were slaughtered, and blood samples were collected at bleeding procedure of slaughter. Pigs fed the diet with MgSO₄ supplement had higher (p<0.05) serum magnesium concentrations than those in pigs fed a control diet. Serum adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol concentrations determined at slaughter were not significantly different between dietary groups. Carcass temperature, pH at 24h post- slaughter, drip loss and color characteristics were not influenced (p>0.05) by short-term supplement of MgSO₄. Pigs fed the diet supplemented with MgSO₄ diet had lower PSE incidence (23.3%) compared to pigs fed the control diet (33%). These results indicate that short-term supplement of dietary MgSO₄ in late finishing pigs may not be beneficial in improving pork quality, and further study needs to assess feeding regime of magnesium supplement.

Physiological Characteristics of Hericium erinaceus in Sawdust Media (노루궁뎅이버섯의 종균배양적 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physiological charateristics of Hericium erinaceus in sawdust media. The optimum temperature was $25^{\circ}C$ and the optimum pH was 5. Mycelial growth and density of H. erinaceus was quite good when oak tree sawdust were used as cultural substrates. The best mycelial growth in H. erinaceus were observed when wheat pollard was added as supplement on sawdust substrates. The optimum supplement ratios of wheat pollard and magnecium sulfate were 20% and 0.1% respectively, for H. erinaceus.

  • The medicines for treating osteoporosis currently in use have minor to severe side effects, and can be financially burdensome. Thus, there is a need for prevention and alternative supplement that is relatively inexpensive, and can be easily consumed daily as an alternative dietary therapy. In this study, bone marrow density of the spine and femur of osteoporosis patients were checked before and after consuming complex composed of calcium and magnesium, considered to be the core of bone mineral content. November 2017-November 2021, patients with T-score of less than -2.5 or -1.0 < T-score < -2.5 with history of fractures or recent fractures were enrolled. The data of 60 patients who orally administered Ionized Cal/MagTM Complex were reviewed retrospectively, and it was significantly confirmed that the average value of T-score was up-regulated by 0.5. Additionally, the cumulative dose was observed to have a positive effect, on the improvement of BMD in the 2nd Lumbar and Femur neck. It is expected that better results will be achieved if use of the supplement is continued.

Antiinflammatory and Myocardial Protective Effects of Magnesium in Patents Undergoing Valvular Heart Surgery (심장판막 수술 시 마그네슘의 항염증 및 심근보호 효과)

  • We have investigated whether the supplement of magnesium to cold blood cardioplegia improves myocardial protection. Sixty patients scheduled for elective valvular heart surgery were randomly assigned to a control group (n=30) which received conventional cold blood cardioplegia and an Mg group (n=30) which received cold blood cardioplegia supplemented with 2 g of magnesium sulfate. Electrolytes levels including $Mg^{++}$, hematological and biochemical variables, cytokines, myocardial marker levels, and postoperative outcomes were compared between two groups before, during or idler operation. $Mg^{++}\;and\;Ca^{++}$ levels in the Mg group were higher than those of the control group after surgery. The total WBC counts, CK-MB, troponin-I and Interleukin-6 levels in the Mg group were lower than those of the control group after surgery. Postoperative incidence of atrial fibrillation was lower in the Mg group compared with the control group. These results showed that $Mg^{++}$ attenuated inflammatory reaction, myocardial damage, and hypomagnesemia during valvular surgery and reduced postoperative arrhythmia incidence without side effects.

High Flame Retardancy and High-strength of Polymer Composites with Synergistically Reinforced MOSw and EG

  • Polymers are inherently vulnerable to flame, which limits their application to various high-tech industries. In addition, environmental regulations restrict the use of halogen-based flame retardants which has best flame-retardant effect. There are inorganic flame retardants and phosphorous flame retardants as representative non-halogen-based flame retardants. However, high content of flame retardants is required to impart high flame retardancy of the polymers, and this leads to a decrease in mechanical properties. In this research, a new approach for inorganic flame retardant-based polymer composites with high mechanical properties and flame retardancy was suggested. Inorganic flame retardants called as magnesium oxysulfate whisker (MOSw) were used in this research. MOSw can extinguish fire by releasing water and non-combustible gases when exposed to flame. In addition, they have reinforcing effect when added into the polymer with its high aspect ratio. Expandable graphite (EG) was used as a flame-retardant supplement by helping to form a more dense char layer. Through this research, it is expected that it can be applied to various industries requiring flame retardancy such as automobile, and architecture by replacing halogen-based flame polymer composites.

Effects of Zinc on Carbohydrate Metabolism and the Serum Concentrations of Zinc, Magnesium and Chromium in Obese Rats (아연 수준이 비만쥐의 당대사와 혈청 아연, 마그네슘, 크롬 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary zinc levels on carbohydrate metabolism and serum zinc, magnesium and chromium contents in obese rats. Animals were divided into three groups by zinc levels, such as low (15 ppm), adequate (30 ppm) and high (60 ppm) levels of dietary zinc. The food intake, weight gain and feed efficiency ratio were not changed by zinc levels. There were no significant differences in liver, kidney and spleen weights. However, serum glucose concentration significantly decreased as the levels of dietary zinc increased, in particular, that of obese rats fed the high level of zinc was remarkably decreased. Insulin concentration of rats fed high level of zinc diet was significantly higher than that in the other groups. However, there were no significant differences in serum zinc and chromium contents, although serum magnesium fed zinc deficient diet was significantly higher than that of the other two groups. Glucose concentrations had negative correlation with insulin concentrations, and positive correlations with serum magnesium content. In conclusion, serum glucose concentrations were decreased and insulin concentrations were increased as the levels of dietary zinc increased in obese rats. These results suggested that zinc supplement at higher level than adequate one would increase insulin concentration and may improve hyperglycemia problem in obese groups.

Phosphorus Requirement and Optimum Level of Dietary Supplementation with Magnesium Hydrogen Phosphate (MgHPO4) Recovered from Swine Manure for Juvenile Carp Cyprinus carpio (잉어(Cyprinus carpio) 사료 내 돈 분뇨 유래 Magnesium Hydrogen Phosphate (MgHPO4)의 적정 첨가수준 및 인 요구량)

  • A growth trial was conducted to determine the optimal supplement of dietary magnesium hydrogen phosphate (MHP, $MgHPO_4$) which was manufactured from swine manure and phosphorus (P) requirements of juvenile carp Cyprinus carpio. Graded MHP of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0%, each was added to the basal diet (control) in lieu of cellulose to become the range of available P from 0.4 to 0.7%. The lowest weight gain (WG) and highest feed conversion ratio (FCR) were found in the control group (P<0.05). The group fed a diet supplemented with 2.0% MHP showed the highest WG, which was not significantly different from those of fish groups that received 1.0% and 1.5% MHP (P>0.05). The lowest FCR was observed in fish groups fed 1.5% and 2.0% MHP. Plasma inorganic P was significantly higher (P<0.05) in all fish groups fed MHP-supplemented diets than in control group. A second-order regression analysis on WG revealed that the optimum dietary MHP level and the available P (AP) requirement were found to be 1.85 and 0.66%, respectively. Expressed in terms of 'g AP intake per kg $BW^{0.8}$ per day', the AP requirement was found to be approximately 0.032 g/kg $BW^{0.8}/d$.
