Dynamic modeling and active vibration control of smart hull structure using Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuator is conducted. Finite element modeling is used to obtain equations of motion and boundary effects of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the smart hull structure, and compared to the results of experimental investigation. Negative velocity feedback control algorithm is employed to investigate active damping of hull structure. It is observed that non-resonant vibration of hull structure is suppressed effectively by the MFC actuators.
Experimental testing is considered the most realistic approach to obtain a detailed representation of the nonlinear behaviour of masonry-infilled reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Among other applications, these tests can be used to calibrate the properties of numerical models such as simplified macro-models (e.g., strut-type models) representing the masonry infill behaviour. Since the significant cost of experimental tests limits their widespread use, alternative approaches need to be established to obtain adequate data to validate the referred simplified models. The proposed paper introduces a detailed finite element modelling strategy that can be used as an alternative to experimental tests to represent the behaviour of masonry-infilled RC frames under earthquake loading. Several examples of RC infilled frames with different infill configurations and properties subjected to cyclic loading are analysed using the proposed modelling approach. The comparison between numerical and experimental results shows that the numerical models capture the overall nonlinear behaviour of the physical specimens with adequate accuracy, predicting their monotonic stiffness, strength and several failure mechanisms.

This work presents an active vibration control of a stiffened hull structure using a flexible macro fiber composite(MFC) actuator. As first step, the governing equation of the hull structure is derived in a matrix form and its dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency are obtained via a finite element analysis(FEA). The natural frequencies obtained from the FEA are compared with those determined from experimental measurement. After formulating the control model in a state space representation, an optimal controller is designed in order to attenuate the vibration of the stiffened hull structure. The controller is then empirically realized through dSPACE and control responses are evaluated in time domain.

Active vibration control of smart hull structure using Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuator is performed. Finite element modeling is used to obtain governing equations of motion and boundary effects of end-capped smart hull structure. Equivalent interdigitated electrode model is developed to obtain piezoelectric couplings of MFC actuator. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure, and compared to the results of experimental investigation. MFC actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller and structural vibration is controlled effectively.
This paper deals with numerical modeling of dynamic failure phenomena in rate-sensitive brittle and/or ductile materials. To this end, a two-dimensional continuum viscodamage-embedded discontinuity model, which is based on our previous work (see Do et al. 2017), is developed. More specifically, the pre-peak nonlinear and rate-sensitive hardening response of the material behavior, representing the fracture-process zone creation, is described by a rate-dependent continuum damage model. Meanwhile, an embedded displacement discontinuity model is used to formulate the post-peak response, involving the macro-crack creation accompanied by exponential softening. The numerical implementation in the context of the finite element method exploiting the second-order mid-point scheme is discussed in detail. In order to show the performance of the model several numerical examples are included.

In this paper, dynamic modeling of hull structure including surface-bonded piezoelectric composite actuator was developed and structural vibration control performance was evaluated. Cylindrical shell structure with end-caps was considered as a host structure which could be used as a simple model of fuselage of aircraft and underwater vehicles. An advanced piezoelectric composite, macro-fiber composite(MFC), which has been developed in NASA Langley Research Center was applied for the effective structural vibration control. MFC has great flexibility by using piezoceramic fiber sheet and enhanced piezoelectric effect for in-plane motion by utilizing interdigitated electrode. Governing Equations were derived from the finite element model and modal characteristics were investigated. Modal test was conducted to verify the finite element model. Optimal controller was designed and implemented for the evaluation of vibration control performance. Structural vibration was controlled effectively by applying proper control input to the piezoelectric actuators.
Plate and shell structure is widely applied in engineering, i.e. building roofs, aircraft wings, ship platforms, and satellite solar arrays. Its vibration problem has become increasingly prominent due to the tendency of lightening, upsizing and flexibility. As a new smart material with great actuating force and toughness, macro-fiber composite (MFC) is composed of piezoelectric fiber and epoxy resin basal body, which can be directly pasted onto the surface of plate and shell and is suitable for vibration control. This paper deduces the actuation equation of MFC coupled plate in different boundary conditions, an equivalent finite element modeling method is proposed which uses MFC actuating force as the applied excitation, and on this basis the active control simulation and experiment of MFC over plate and shell structure vibration are accomplished. The results indicate that MFC is able to implement effective control over plate and shell structure vibration in multi-band range. The comparison between experiment and simulation proves that the actuation equation deduced herein, effective and practicable, can be applied into the simulation calculation of MFC vibration control over plate and shell structure.
In history based parametric CAD modeling systems, persistent identification of the topological entities after design modification is mandatory to keep the design intent by recording model creation history and modification history. Persistent identification of geometric and topological entities is necessary in the product design phase as well as in the re-evaluation stage. For the identification, entities should be named first according to the methodology which will be applicable for all the entities unconditionally. After successive feature operations on a part body, topology based persistent identification mechanism generates ambiguity problem that usually stems from topology splitting and topology merging. Solving the ambiguity problem needs a complex method which is a combination of topology and geometry. Topology is used to assign the basic name to the entities. And geometry is used for the ambiguity solving between the entities. In the macro parametrics approach of iCAD lab of KAIST a topology based persistent identification mechanism is applied which will solve the ambiguity problem arising from topology splitting and also in case of topology merging. Here, a method is proposed where no geometry comparison is necessary for topology merging. The present research is focused on the enhancement of the persistent identification schema for the support of ambiguity problem especially of topology splitting problem and topology merging problem. It also focused on basic naming of pattern features.
Masonry walls are amongst the oldest building systems. A large portion of the research on these structures focuses on the load-bearing walls. Numerical methods have been generally used in modelling load-bearing walls during recent years. In this context, macro and micro modelling techniques emerge as widely accepted techniques. Micro modelling is used to investigate the local behaviour of load-bearing walls in detail whereas macro modelling is used to investigate the general behaviour of masonry buildings. The main objective of this study is to investigate the elastic behaviour of the load- bearing walls in masonry buildings by using micro modelling technique. In order to do this the brick and mortar units of the masonry walls are modelled by the combination of plane truss elements and plane frame elements with no shear deformations. The model used in this study has fewer unknowns then the models encountered in the references. In this study the vertical frame elements have equivalent elasticity modulus and moment of inertia which are calculated by the developed software. Under in-plane static loads the elastic displacements of the masonry walls, which are encountered in literature, are calculated by the developed software, where brick units are modelled by plane frame elements, horizontal joints are modelled by vertical frame elements and vertical joints are modelled by horizontal plane truss elements. The calculated results are compatible with those given in the references.
