The purpose of this study is an evaluation of flat end mills to develop appropriate tools for the high speed machining. First of all, several flat end mills which are produced by different makers are selected to analyze the performances of the tools. Experimental works are also executed to measure cutting farce, tool wear and surface roughness for different cutting conditions. And then the results are compared and analyzed for developing optimal cutting tool in the high speed condition.

In the control of CNC machine tools, it is significant for precise machining to reduce the contour error. The object of servo-control is reduction of contour error and tracking error. In past studies, there were two approaches to control a servo-system. One was to eliminate axial tracking errors, and the other was to control contour errors. The Cross-coupled controller(CCC) was introduced fro ma veiwpoint of contour error model. Recently, for machining part with free form surfaces, we propose a new contour error model based on curve interpolator. It is presented here that performance of CCC using proposed model is enhanced. Therefore, we can make more precise parts with the curve interpolator and the new contour error model.
This paper deals with the development of a software module for production planning and scheduling activities of an existing Flexible Machining and Assembly System (FMAS). The Production Planning Module uses the hierarchical and sequential scheme based on "divide and conquer" philosophy. In this module, routes are determined based on the production order, orders are screened, tools are allocated, and order adjustments are executed according to the allocated tools. The Scheduling Module allocates the resources, determines the task priority and the start and completion times of tasks. Re-scheduling can be done to handle unforeseen situations such as lumpy demands and machine breakdowns. Since all modules are integrated with a central database and they interface independently, it is easy to append new modules or update the existing modules. The result of this study is used for operating the real FMAS consisting of a machining cell with 2 domestic NC machines and a part feeding robot, an assembly cell with a conveyor and 3 robots, an inspection cell, an AGV, an AS/RS, and a central control computer.

The appearance of new machine tools with higher flexibility is in need of a basic structure design system for establishing the systematic and rationalized design and manufacturing procedures. In this study. the basic structure design system for machine tools is realized based on the modular construction method. Machine tools are represented as a whole and modular complex with the directed graph, and all possible structural configurations and codes of machine tools for satisfying the machining requirement are derived from the DNA data and connecting patterns of basic structural elements. Especially the structural configurations of machine tools are visualized by the solid modeling techniques and 3-D graphics techniques.

With the acceleration of the miniaturization of products, especially in recent years, machining technologies for these products is in need of improvement. Conventional technologies have limitations in realizing the miniaturization due to the downsizing effects of the tools, which lack sufficient cutting stiffness during machining. The application of ultrasonic vibration is one of the most useful solutions in dealing with the problem. This study focused on the difference of ultrasonic drilling from conventional one in geometrical machining mechanism and the corresponding machining results. In detailed, some mathematical equations for drill cutting edge paths during drilling were extracted and new method to find uncut chip thickness from above equations was suggested. The experiments were carried out through the comparison between the results (disposed chips and internal surface states of holes) of conventional drilling and those of ultrasonic drilling. It was determined that the geometrical paths of cutting edges and analyzed uncut chip thickness agree with the appearance of disposed chips. Furthermore, the change in tool path by ultrasonic vibration resulted in the improvement of surface statement.

In modern manufacturing, many products that have geometrically complicated features, including three-dimensional sculptured surfaces, are being designed and produced to meet various sophisticated functional specifications. The cutting force is required not only for the design of machine and cutting tools, but also for the determination of the cutting conditions for the various machining operations. The ball-end mill is deflected by the cutting force and, the tool deflection is one of the main reasons of the machining errors on a free-form surface. Hence, The cutting force generated in the ball-end milling is the most important property of the machining. The purpose of this study is to find the characteristics of the cutting force in inclined plane and the resultant machining errors in the ball-end milling process. Although the depth of cut is constant in the inclined plane, the cutting force area varies due to the hemisphere of the ball-end mill.

The roller gear cam can control the rotational follower periodically by attaching several roller on the circumstance of follower shaft and it is widely used in non-backlash and precise actuating mechanism such as index table or ATC of machine tools. For machining the roller gear cam, 5 axis CNC machine tool is used and the geometric principle of CAM mechanism must be adopted to generate the NC-code and to develop the special CAD/CAM software because there is not commercial CAM system to machine the roller gear cam. The maker of the specially developed software in domestic user is generally from Japan or Taiwan. However these softwares do not reflect the post processing technique for finish machining in the module. Also, there is some limitation for further new application of itself and it needs higher costs for further application. In this study, the CAD/CAM software to overcome these problem was developed. And its reliability was verified by applying it in 5-axis CNC machining. Finally, the experimental result conducted in the 5-axis machining show good consistency in the movement of follower along the flute and in its Size.

This paper presents a process and operation planning system with an NC code post-processor for effective machining of press dies for production of cars. Based on the machining features, major parts of press dies are categorized into 15 groups and a standard process plan is defined for each group. The standard process plan consists of a series of processes where a process is defined as a group of operations that can be done with one setup. Details such as cutting tools, cutting conditions, and tool paths are decided at the operation planning stage. At the final stage of process and operation planning, the NC code post-processor we developed adjusts feedrates along the tool path to reduce machining time. The adjustment rule is selected based on the metal removal rate estimated by virtually machining with virtual cutting tool.

Machine tool errors have to be characterized and predicted to improve machine tool accuracy. Therefore, it is very important to assess errors in machine tools. Volumetric error analysis has been developed by many researchers. This paper presents a useful technique for analyzing the volumetric errors in machine tools using the ball bar. The volumetric error model is proposed in specific vertical machining center and the program is developed for generating NC code, acquiring the ball bar data, and analyzing the volumetric errors. The developed system assesses the volumetric errors such as positional, straightness, squareness, and back lash. Also this system analyzes the dynamic performance such as servo gain mismatch. The radial data acquired by ball bar on 3D space is used for analyzing these errors. It is convenient to test the volumetric errors on 3D space because all errors are calculated at once. The developed system has been tested using an actual vertical machining center.
