Study on Effects of Coatings on Cutting Tool Wear (절삭공구의 피복층이 공구마멸에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • In order to investigate tribological effects of coatings on different places on tool wear, commercial quality coated inserts were tested in production speed machining after the coatings on clearance or rake face of coated tools were selectively removed. The experimental results demonstrated that the primary role of coatings in tool wear was the reduction of the thermochemical adhesion between the tool material and workpiece. And the coating on rake face was observed to retard the progress of flank wear. In case of machining carbon steel, multicoated tools showed the most favorable results for considering the notch wear.

Error Identification and Compensation for NC Machine Tools Using the Reference Artifact (기준물을 이용한 NC 공작기계의 오차규명 및 보상제어)

  • Methodology of volumetric error identification and compensation is presented to improve the accuracy of NC machine tools by using a reference artifact and a touch trigger probe. Homogeneous transformation matrix and kinematic chain are used for modeling the geo-metric and thermal errors of a three-axis vertical machining center. The reference artifact is designed and fabricated to identify the model parameters by machine tool metrology. Parameters in the error model are able to be identified and updated by direct measurement of the reference artifact on the machine tool under the actual conditions which include the thermal interactions of error sources. A volumetric error compensation system based on IBM/PC is linked with a FANUC CNC controller to compensate for the identified volumetric error in machining workspace.

  • Generally, A motor integrated spindle is selected to perform the high speed machining, to improve the machining flexibility, and to simplify the structure of machine tools. The thermal deformation caused by heat generation of the integrated motor is, however, serious problem in motor integrated spindle system. In this study, cooling characteristics for the several kinds of cooling systems(such as, oil-jacket cooling, air cooling) are investigated and more efficient cooling method is presented. The results show that the shaft cooling by the air cooling system is effective to improve the thermal characteristic of motor integrated spindle.

  • In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to analyze the thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with the touch probe unit and five gap sensors on the vertical and horizontal machining centers.

  • In order to utilize the information of well-known grinding data or grinding machine, a database needs to be designed by considering the delicate property of the machine tools for the high precision and quality of the demanding specification. Among the machine tools, machining conditions of the grinding are various and knowledge repeatance obtained form the grinding process are less credable.Therefore it is desirable for D/B, which is used to set the grinding conditions, to utilize the maximum machine tool capability. The present paper studied occurance limit of chatter vibration and burn considering the characteristics of machine tool. And also basic experiments were performed to establish optimum grinding canditions which can maximize the machining efficiency.

  • As the accuracy of manufactured goods needed high-accuracy processing has made the efficiency of NC and measurment technology develop, the innovation of machine tools has influence the development of the semi-conductor and optical technology. We can mention that a traction role of the acceleration for the development like that depends on the development of the measurement technics - Stylus instrument method, STM, SEM, Laser interferometer method - which are used for measuring the movement accuracy of machine tools. The movement error factors in movement accuracy are expressed as yaw, roll, and pitch etc. Machining center has 21 movement error factors including of 3 axies joint errors because that has 3 axies and has been measured as the standard of the unloaded condition until now inspite of getting static, dynamic, and servo-gain errors in the case of expending the error range. Therefore, this study tries to measure position accuracy according to loading on the X-Y table of the machining center.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of surface roughness and cutting force in ultraprecision cutting of aluminium alloy using natural diamond tools whose edge radii are smaller than those of tools made of other materials. The feed rate and depth of engagement were set to be a micrometer order. After measuring the surface roughness of machined surface and cutting force for each cutting condition, the relations between the surface quality and its condition were investigated qualitatively. If the feed rate was under a certain limit, the machined surface quality was deteriorated unexpectedly. This is supposed to have happened due to vibration leading its condition to abnormal one. In a certain situation the machined surface roughness by a natural diamond tool was inferior to that made by a carbide tool whose cutting edge radius is larger. This is supposed to be caused by not normal machining but burnishing effect.

  • Drilling is an indispensable process in manufacturing of the die and mould and the other mechanical parts which needs high dimensional and surface accuracy. In this paper, a new type of drilling method was proposed in order to improve both processing efficiency and accuracy. Specifically, the helical motion using ball end mill tools, instead of normal drilling method, was applied to perform an effective hole machining. In this paper, an theoretical background of the new type of drilling method was established, and the feasibility of the proposed theory was proved by experiments, where proposed drilling process in the paper gave a different machining specification than general method did.

  • This paper deals with development of expert process planning system which automatically generates process plan for manufacturing parts of injection mold. The specific domain of study is two-plate injection mold without support plate. Decision making rules for selection of machining processes machine tools, cutting tools and for determination of sequence of machining operations are acquired by interview of skilled process planner. The developed expert process planning system is programmed by using expert system shell CLIPS on the IBM PC/AT. The proposed system works well to real problems.

  • The suitable tools for CGI material has not been developed yet because of high hardness, high toughness and very low machininability compared to the grey cast iron. And the tool life has been decreased as the contents of Ti in CGI material. From this research, we were able to do the high speed machining by using high toughness silicon nitride ceramic tools. The silicon nitride ceramic tool grade was specially designed and prepared with microstructure of elongated grains with higher aspect ratio (c/a) than conventional one.
