An efficient method of machining impeller is presented. In the roughing process, the cutting area is divided into two regions to reduce cutting time and select cutting tools. The regions are determined by characteristic point on the geometry of impeller blade. Then, the tool of the maximum radius is selected in each area. Tool interference in cutting areas is avoided by checking the intersection between cooing tool axis and ruling line on blade surface.

A method is developed to evaluate machining process and to determine the optimal machining conditions considering the environmental effects. The method Is based on the evaluation attributes from the general LCA programs and the analysis technique of AHP from HHS. To assist the analysis. the mass models of cutting energy, tools, and fluids are developed. The models may be used for both quantitative prediction of the uses and disposed masses of materials and optimization of the machining conditions. The algorithm with the mass models is applied to the milling process planning. The process to survey the environmental data, calculate the used mass, and evaluate the alternatives is demonstrated. This demonstration illustrates the of the change of process conditions of the decision making.

For geometric accuracy in the net shape machining, the problem of tool deflection should be resolved in some fashion. In particular, this is crucial in finish cut operation where slim tools are used. The purpose of this paper is to verify the validity and effectiveness of the prediction model of the machined surface. Experimental results are presented for the cut of steel material with HSS endmill of diameter 6mm on machining center. The results shows that 1) the machining error due totool deflection is serious even in the low cutting load, 2) by using the mechanistic simulation model with experimental coefficients, the machining error was predicted with maximum prediction error of 10% which was significantly reduced to the desired level by the path modification method.

Micro-milling is an efficient method for fabricating micro structures because of its high machining rate compared with other non-conventional micro machining processes. But it is not easy to make a micro milling tool with less than 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter by conventional machining. In this study, the characteristics of a micro milling tool fabricated by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) were studied. The workpiece is copper and stainless steel. The effects of some machining conditions such as feed rate, depth of cut, and a shape of tool were studied. The tools with D-shape and square shape in cross section were tested for machining micro grooves and 3D structures.

In machining screws which are important members in mono pumps or progressive cavity pumps CNC turning center with 3 axes is usually used. This sort of screw machining requires large amount of CL data points and rotational tools are used in machining. When working out the CL data points consideration of possible tool interference is important in order to avoid undercut. This paper describes the checking methods of tool interference in the screw machining on the CNC turning center. First of all a specific shape of a screw cross-section that could commonly be applied to all screws was chosen and then possible tool interference associated with that shape was identified. Checking method was mathematically developed and verified. This checking method will be utilized in the CAM system developed by the authors for screw machining on the 3-axis CNC turning center.

The rapid wear rate of cutting tools due to high cutting temperature is a critical problem to be solved in machining of hardened steel. Application of cutting fluid influences the performance of machining because of its lubrication and cooling actions. But, the environmental concerns call for the reduced use of cutting fluids in machining operations. Near-dry machining such as minimum quantity lubrication is regarded as one of the solutions to this difficulty. In the present work, cutting fluid was applied as a high velocity jet at the machining zone continuously at an extreme low rate using a fluid application system developed namely Electro Static Lubrication (ESL) during drilling of hardened steel. The performance of ESL has been compared with that of dry and MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) machining.
The properties of a machine tool greatly affect machining quality since a machine tool has large variance in its features. Machine tool makers want to find best machining condition with the one that they have built. Machine builders need to develop test specimen since it helps finding characteristics of machine tools when the machining properties of the specimen are analyzed. This paper develops test specimen to identify features of the main spindle, the feeding device, and the frame of a machine tool. The specimen is machined with a high speed machine and the features of the machine are analyzed with test items. They are surface roughness, overshoot in axial movement, errors in circular movement, feeding with small movement, and compensational error. This work can improve usability for a machine tool in machining practice.
The method of electrical discharge machining (EDM), one of the processing methods based on non-traditional manufacturing procedures, is gaining increased popularity, since it does not require cutting tools and allows machining involving hard, brittle, thin and complex geometry. Modern ED machinery is capable of machining geometrically complex or hard material components, that are precise and difficult-to-machine such as heat treated tool steels, composites, super alloys, ceramics, etc. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation by Taguchi method carried out to study the effects of machining parameters on material surface roughness in electric discharge machining of SM45C. The work material was ED machined with graphite and copper electrodes by varying the pulsed current, voltage and pulse time. Investigations indicate that the surface roughness is strongly depend on pulsed current.

A drum cam with rotational follower has a cam mechanism and it is mainly used in its application such as index table and ATC of machine tool. Also its use can reduce the backlash in its kinematic movement. To machine the drum cam with rotational follower, 5-axis CNC machine tool is generally used and its kinematic principle is included in it's design. Until now, the commercialized CAM software can't cover the application of the drum cam machining. Even if, some special software was developed for machining a drum cam, the post processing method for finish machining was not developed yet. And to overcome the problem, the form tool is still used on the tool path of rough machining. This study includes the induction of the post processing technique for the finish machining of drum cam on three 5-axis CNC machine tools, type AC, AB and BC. To prove the finishing geometric profile, the result was clearly verified through inspection and geometric measurement after direct machining of the drum cam in AC type 5-axis machine tool in this study.
