  • This paper proposes a mobile SCTP (mSCTP) handover scheme for vertical handover between 3G wireless and WiBro networks. To evaluate the proposed mSCTP vertical handover scheme, we implement the mSCTP handover supporting system over Linux platform in which the movement of a mobile node is automatically detected and the mSCTP vertical handover is performed by the mobile node. We analyze and compare the performance of mSCTP handover and Mobile IP handover over the preconfigured testbed. From the numerical results, we can see that the handover latency of mSCTP could be much more reduced, compared to the Mobile IP handover, if the mobile node would sojourn long enough in the overlapping region between the two heterogeneous networks.

  • Recently mobile Stream Control Transmission Protocol (mSCTP) has been proposed as a transport layer approach for supporting mobility. When a mobile terminal (MT) is not located in the home network. a terminal that wishes to communicate with the MT is not able to establish mSCTP association to the MT, since mSCTP does not include the location management mechanism. In order to solve this problem. an interworking approach using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) INVITE method has been proposed. However, this approach has shown subsequent delay in acquiring the current location information of the MT when initiating mSCTP association establishment. In this paper, we propose new SIP methods and an approach that minimizes the address acquisition delay (AAD) by utilizing those SIP methods. Mathematical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed approach is more efficient than the previous approach in terms of AAD in all kinds of SIP environments.

  • Recently, mSCTP (Mobile SCTP) has been proposed as a transport layer approach for supporting mobility. mSCTP is based on the ‘multi-homing’ feature of Stream Control Transmission Protocol(SCTP), and utilize the functions to dynamically add or delete IP addresses of end points to or from the existing connectionin order to support mobility. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to determine when to add or delete an W address, utilizing the link layer radio signal strength information in order to enhance the performance of mSCTP We also propose a mechanism for a mobile node to initiate the change of data delivery path based on link layer radio signal strength information. In addition, if it takes long time to acquire new data path, we propose an approach for reducing handover latency. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed transport layer mobility support mechanism is competitive compared to the traditional network layer mobility supporting approach. Especially, when the moving speed of mobile node is fast, it shows better performance than the traditional network layer approaches.

  • The SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) implementation with the DAR (Dynamic Address Reconfiguration) extension is called the mSCTP (Mobile SCTP) that is proposed recently for mobility support in transport layer. The mSCTP does not satisfy short handover latency for real-time applications and it has no specific handover decision mechanisms. In this paper, we propose fast handover schemes for mobile nodes that are moving into different subnet using pre-acquisition RA (Router Advertisement) and L3 trigger for improving handover performance. Furthermore, we introduce three specific methods which are RA cache, FMIPv6 (Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6) and dual interface and how proposed scheme can be interoperated with handover process respectively. Finally, we show two experimental results which are the mSCTP and the mSCTP using FMIPv6 on Linux platforms. Experimental results show that handover performance is improved with reducing the time of receiving RA which takes most of total handover latency.

  • Mobile SCTP (mSCTP) is a new scheme which can be used to provide seamless handover for the mobile node. The reason that is possible is because of the SCTP extension which provides a method to reconfigure IP address on an existing SCTP association (ADDIP). While mSCTP focuses on an association originated ken mobile node (MN) toward fixed correspondent node (CN), mSCTP with Mobile IP support an association originated from CN toward MN by using the Home Agent in Mobile IP and location management. However, there are still some problems related to communication interruption. In this paper, we present a new scheme to solve these problems. The main idea of this scheme is using the home address of MN as a backup path of an SCTP association.

  • In this paper, we propose a transport layer mobility support protocol for multimedia streaming services in mobile/wireless environments by extending PR-SCTP to support mobility. We named the proposed scheme to be uPR-mSCTP. The rules related to provide unordered and unreliable data transfer, as well as an approach to minimize handover latency we proposed. Through the simulation results, it is shown that, since uPR-mSCTP reduces transmission rates during handover, not only it reduces the waste of network resources, but it also has the packet loss rate similar to FMIPv6, which is a lot smaller than UDP over MIPv6 or HMIPv6 It also incurs smaller control packet overhead compared to the network layer mobility support approaches.

  • This paper analyzes the handover latency of Mobile IP and mobile SCTP over IPv6 networks. The analytical results are compared with the performance by experiment over Linux testbed. For analysis, we consider the two handover scenarios: horizontal handover and vertical handover. From the results, we see that mSCTP can provide smaller handover latency than Mobile IP. Moreover, mSCTP can give much smaller handover latency for vertical handover, compared to horizontal handover.

  • This paper proposes a dynamic IP address configuration (DAC) scheme for mSCTP handover, which exploits the information from the link layer to support SCTP handover between heterogeneous access networks. The proposed DAC scheme enables a mobile terminal to automatically add a new IP address in the newly visited region, change the primary path, and delete the old IP address so as to support the mSCTP handover. For experimental analysis of mSCTP handover, we consider the handover scenarios for 3G-BWA and 3G-WLAN over Linux platforms. From experimental results, it is shown that the throughput and handover latency of the mSCTP handover would be affected by the timing of primary-change and the overlapping period.
