  • Using two- and three-dimensional fluid simulation codes, we have suggested several new plasma display panel (PDP) cell structures that have high luminous efficiency compared with conventional structure. To improve the luminance and discharge efficiency, we utilize long discharge path, lower electric field region, and reduction of power consumption by adding one auxiliary electrode or reducing the electrode area. Consequently, luminous efficiency increases about 1.8 times. Furthermore for the resonance radiation trapping effect in PDP system, we have described a self-consistent radiation transport model coupled with fluid simulation using modified Holstein's equation.

  • This paper presents a new self-erasing discharge mode for the improvement of luminous efficiency and color purity of an AC plasma display panel (AC PDP). A new self-erasing discharge mode is produced between successive sustain pulses. by simultaneously applying the auxiliary short pulses at the falling edge of the sustain pulses without cross-talk during a sustain period. As a result. the luminous efficiency and color gamut are improved by 16% and 5%, respectively.

  • Using the volume-limited Main galaxy sample constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we explore the environmental dependence of the fraction of 'unconventional' galaxies: luminous blue and faint red. It is found that the fraction of faint red increases apparently with increasing local density, and the fraction of luminous blue declines substantially with increasing local density, which shows that there is an environmental dependence for color beyond that for luminosity.

  • A new PDP cell structure called CSP (Charge Storage Pad) improves the luminous efficiency by 1.6 times and prevents cross talk between adjacent cells. The CSP, which is a conducting material, is inserted between the dielectric layer and the MgO film in the front plate. This CSP produces a longer time-averaged discharge path to get a high luminous efficiency and confines the discharge to prevent cross talk.

  • A highly simplified backlight unit mainly composed of diffractive grating in sub-micron order imprinted light-guide plate (LGP) is proposed for edge-lit backlight unit. Optical characteristics of the imprinted LGP are examined by RCWA and the performance is verified through Monte Carlo simulation. Results show that the diffraction efficiency, luminous flux and its uniformity over the area are significantly affected by the angle of incident ray. Consequently couples of design considerations are additionally proposed to enhance luminous flux. In terms of peak luminance and out-coupling luminous flux, the experimental results are agreed well with the performance simulation. Finally, compared with optical characteristics of conventional backlight unit, we could conclude that the proposed simplified backlight unit made of diffractive grating imprinted light-guide plate is a good substitute for the conventional backlight unit.

  • In a conventional plasma display, the bus electrode was located on the ITO electrode at the outer part of each cell. We propose a new electrode configuration using vertical auxiliary electrodes which play a role of electrically connecting ITO and bus electrodes with the aim of enhancing discharge and luminous characteristics of the PDP (Plasma Display Panel). In this paper, luminance and luminous efficiency of the 3 in.-diagonal test panel are measured with various number of vertical auxiliary electrodes such as 2, 50 and 150. The change in the luminous characteristics is explained in connection with the discharge characteristics of the PDP cells such as current peak, IR emission peak and ICCD picture image.

  • We have seen the effects of buffer layer in organic light-emitting diodes using poly(N-vinylcarbazole)(PVK). Polymer PVK buffer layer was made using static spin-casting method. Two device structures were made; one is ITO/TPD/Alq3/Al as a reference and the other is ITO/PVK/TPD/Alq3/Al to see the effects of buffer layer in organic light-emitting diodes. Current-voltage characteristics, luminance-voltage characteristics and luminous efficiency were measured with a variation of spin-casting speeds. We have obtained an improvement of luminous efficiency by a factor of two and half when the PVK buffer layer is used.

  • Dual auxiliary pulses are adopted in an AC PDP with an auxiliary electrode. The secondary auxiliary pulse of dual auxiliary pulses efficiently utilizes priming particles and contributes to improved luminous efficacy. A shorter time interval between the two auxiliary pulses resulted in better efficacy. The maximum luminous efficacy was approximately 12 lm/W according to measurement of the discharge in a Ne+20%Xe gas-mixture and green cells.

  • In this study, a high luminous efficacy AC-PDP panel with long discharge gap and grooved dielectric layer has been studied. By applying this high efficacy concept and optimized driving waveform featuring negative biased sustain, ${\sim}2.6lm/W$ of luminous efficacy was achieved in 42- inch HD panel. Modified fabricating process and new discharge cell structure were investigated to obtain improved uniformity and operating characteristics.

  • In order to improve the luminous efficiency in ac PDP(Plasma Display Panel), we have suggested a new bridge type sustaining electrode which makes it possible to have free alignment between front and rear panels. The luminous efficiency of the ac PDP with suggested new sustaining electrode is improved by about 28% compared with that of conventional sustaining electrode. However, the luminance of the ac PDP with the suggested electrode is kept the same with the conventional ones.
