  • Blue-light-emitting peiymer/dielectric nanolayer nanocomposites were prepared by the solution intercalation method and employed in electroluminescent device. Their photoluminescence and electroluminescence characteristics suggested that the nanolayers isolate the polymer chains and hinder the formation of excimers and aggregates. By reducing the excimer formation and its deleterious effects on emission efficiency, both the color purity and the luminescence stability were improved. Furthermore, the dielectric nanolayers have an aspect ratio of about 500 and therefore act as efficient barriers to oxygen and moisture diffusion, which produced a dramatic increase in the device stability.

  • A group of new N,N-bis(5-acetylpyridin-2-yl)phenylamine derivatives was synthesized in good yield applying an optimized Buchwald-Hartwig amination protocol. The synthesized compounds showed UV absorption maxima in the range of 320-360 nm, and showed good luminescence at dilute concentrations in the blue region of the spectra (in the range of 480-497 nm). They showed also a bathochromic shift associating the increase in solvent polarity. The synthesized compounds could be investigated for use in OLEDs or as potential monomers for PLEDs.

  • ZnO is well-known as a promising material for optical communication systems and electronic displays. ZnO:Er thin films were deposited on c-plane sapphire substrates by rf magnetron sputtering, and the effects of sputtering parameters and the annealing conditions on the luminescence in the visible range were investigated. Luminescent properties depended on the crystallinity of films and annealing atmosphere. Highly c-axis oriented ZnO:Er films showed a strong emission band at 465 nm and a weak emission at 525 nm due to the energy transition of $^{4}I_{15/2}-^{4}F_{5/2}\;and\;^{4}I_{15/2}-^{2}H_{11/2}$, respectively. ZnO:Er thin films annealed at air atmosphere were superior to those annealed in $H_2$ in photoluminescence intensity.

  • Willemite powders which have been prepared by solid state reaction were easy to intermixed impurities, and particle surfaces were demaged in the progress of crushing. The above defacts were easy to accompany non-crystallization for mechanochemical effects and luminescence efficiency was deteriorated. The goal of this study improve each of defacts, and synthesize high purity and fine Mn doped willemite powders by wet and hydrothermal methods without crushing progress. It has been experimentally verified that the single phase Zn1.98Mn0.02SiO4 willemite powders which prepared by hydrothermal synthes is at 220$^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in 2N KOH solution. The products are like needle and composition is the same with starting composition.

  • The luminescence properties of a potential blue-emitting $RbBaPO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor substituted with various metal ions have been investigated. The main emission wavelength of the phosphor samples was red-shifted by the substitution with K and Sr ions. The maximum peak intensity was obtained from the sample $Rb_{0.25}K_{0.75}Ba_{0.99}Eu_{0.01}PO_4$ which showed 144% relative intensity versus that of BAM:$Eu^{2+}$ phosphor under 254 nm excitation.

  • The opto-functional materials have been developed as a promising research topic toward the end uses for optical materials and applications. The attractive area in this part was the design of sensor molecules for detecting harmful environmental factors. These harmful factors impart undesired effects on wide range of chemical and biological phenomenon. In this context, many researchers have studied luminescence chemosensor materials. These sensor molecules showed optical signals such as color or fluorescence change by detecting harmful environmental factors. In this study, the novel fluorescence chemosensor 1 has been designed and synthesized through reaction of rhodamine 6g hydrazide and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde. The chemosensor 1 had been analyzed by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrophotometer. We found that this chemosensor 1 has 'off-on' and dual type sensing properties toward $Cu^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$.

  • Microstructure pattern generation on light guides in backlight unit (BLU) is an essential process for designing flat panel display, but efficient designing algorithm is still limited to achieve uniform luminescence while maintaining fully random distribution to avoid interference effects. In this study, a molecular dynamics model based pattern generation algorithm has been developed. The proposed algorithm allows a fast and efficient distribution of patterns at specified density within the user-defined computational cells, and its efficiency and performance has been demonstrated with sample cases.

  • ZnO films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and exposed to intense electron beam irradiation to investigate the effects of electron irradiation on the properties of the films. Although all of the films had ZnO (002) textured structure regardless of electron irradiation, the grain sizes of the films decreased with electron irradiation. Surface roughness also depended on electron irradiation. The surface roughness varied between 2.3 and 1.6 nm, depending on the irradiation energy. Based on photoluminescence (PL) characterization, the most intense UV emission was observed from ZnO films irradiated at 900 eV. Since the intensity of UV emission is dependent upon the stoichiometric of ZnO films, we conclude that 900 eV was the optimum electron irradiation energy to achieve the best stoichiometric of ZnO films in this study.

  • Photoluminescence (PL) properties of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were analyzed to study the effects of carrier leakage on the luminescence properties at room temperature. The electrical leakage and PL properties were compared for LEDs showing leakages at forward bias and an LED with an intentional leakage path formed by connecting a parallel resistance of various values. The leakages at the forward bias, which could be observed from the current-voltage characteristics, resulted in an increase in the excitation laser power density for the maximum PL efficiency (ratio of PL intensity to excitation power) as well as a reduction in the PL intensity. The effect of carrier leakages on PL properties was similar to the change in PL properties owing to a reduction of the photovoltage by a reverse current since the direction of the carrier movement under photoexcitation is identical to that of the reverse current. Valid relations between PL properties and electrical properties were observed as the PL properties deteriorated with an increase in the carrier leakage. The results imply that the PL properties of LED chips can be an indicator of the electrical properties of LEDs.

  • The effect of doping on the energy transfer and charge carrier trapping processes has been studied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) doped with a fluorescent laser dye. The devices consisted of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) as a hole transporting layer, tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ($Alq_3$) as the host, and a fluorescent dye, 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-[2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1 H,5H-benzo[i,j]quinolizin-8-yl) vinyl]-4H-pyran) (DCM2) as the dopant. Temperature dependence of the current-voltage-luminescence (I-V-L) characteristics, the electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra are studied in the temperature ranging between 15 K and 300 K. The emission from DCM2 was seen to be much stronger compared with the emission from $Alq_3$, indicative of efficient energy transfer from $Alq_3$ to DCM2. In addition, the EL emission from DCM2 increasd with increasing temperature while the emission from the host $Alq_3$ decreased. The result indicates that direct charge carrier trapping becomes efficient with increasing temperature. The EL emission from DCM2 shows a slightly sublinear dependence on the current density, implying the enhanced quenching of excitons at high current densities due to the exciton-exciton annihilation.
