Address discharge delay reduction in AC PDP by applying MgO nanoparticle under protective layer

  • We report a method for improving characteristics of AC PDP in this study. This improvement is obtained by spreading MgO nanoparticles on transparent dielectric layer. These nanoparticles are covered with MgO protective layer by electron beam evaporation. MgO nanoparticle has difference in cathodoluminescence stronger than MgO layer by electron beam evaporation. This method worked for reducing statistical delay especially. Efficacy, discharge voltage and luminance were also improved But these improvements has limited lifetime because continuous ion bombardments changed characteristic of MgO surface.

  • This paper deals with the relationship between the addressing and the display in ac-PDP. Especially, deals with the transfer probability of surface discharge according to addressing voltage (Va), blocking voltage(Vg) in addressing period and the characteristics of luminance according to sustain voltage(Vs) in sustaining period with ADS(Address Display period Separation) driving method.

  • The discharge characteristics of the face-to-face sustain electrode structure employing auxiliary address pulse are investigated under a sustain driving frequency of 20 kHz and various auxiliary address pulse widths (500 ns, $1{\mu}s$, $2\;{\mu}s$) in the 6-in. test panel (42-in. Full HD grade) with a pressure of 450 Torr and a 4 % Xe-content. The luminance and the luminous efficiency at the auxiliary address pulse width of 500 ns are improved more than these of $1\;{\mu}s$ and $2\;{\mu}s$. At the auxiliary address pulse width of 500 ns, the luminous efficiency shows about 0.96 lm/W at the auxiliary pulse of 90 V and the sustain voltage of 260 V.

  • In order to realize the PDP that is better than CRT TV, high luminance and high efficient PDP panel should be fabricated. In order to meet these conditions it is inevitable trend to use high Xe% gas working gas. In this paper, we studied the relationships between the static margin, the discharge delay and jitter of PDP and Xe% in Ne gas.

  • The dielectric layers in AC plasma display panel(AC PDP) are essential to the discharge cell structure, because they protect metal electrodes from sputtering by positive ion bombarding in discharge plasma and form a sheath of wall charges which are essential to memory function of AC PDP. This layer should have high dielectric strength and also be transparent because the luminance of PDP is strongly correlated this layer. In this paper, we discussed the dielectric strength and transparency of the dielectric layer under various conditions. As a result, on the $15{\mu}m$ thickness, the minimum dielectric strength was $29V/{\mu}m$ and the transmittance coefficient was about 80% after $570^{\circ}C$ firing process. It can be proposed that the resonable dielectric thickness in AC PDP is $15{\mu}m$ because it has about 80V margin on the maximum applied voltage.

  • As a direct-view flat panel displays, there are many devices, such as plasma display panels(PDPs), vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), and light emitting diode(LED). Among these, a PDP is the first type of panel display to be made commercially available. A 'Plasma display' is the general term for a flat display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. However, the brightness and Luminous efficiency are still not adequate for consumer television. So, the new sustain electrode type of ac PDP was proposed. By arranging the transparent electrode of quadrangle by zigzag, the area of electrode are reduced, and the length of electrode gap is increased. It generates a high luminous efficiency(corresponding to a 40% improvement of standard type), the same discharge voltage characteristics, and the low power consumption at same luminance.

  • The improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency is the one of the most important parts in AC-PDPs. To achieve high luminance and luminous efficiency, high VUV emission efficiency is needed. We measured the emission spectra of the vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) rays in surface discharge AC-PDP with ternary gas mixture of He-Ne-Xe. The influence of He-Ne-Xe gas-mixture ratio on excited $Xe^{\ast}$ resonant atoms and $Xe_2\;^{\ast}$ dimers has been investigated. It is found that luminous efficiency of ternary gas mixture, He-Ne-Xe, is shown to be much higher than that of binary gas mixture of Ne-Xe. For improving discharge luminous efficiency, we have studied VUV emission characteristics of ternary gas mixture, He(50%)-Ne-Xe and He(70%)-Ne-Xe with Xe concentration and filling gas pressure.

A study on the temporal bright image sticking problem in AC PDP

  • In this study, the causes of temporal bright image sticking problem in an AC PDP were investigated. The temporal bright image sticking problem in an ac PDP is observed to be a relatively lower luminance following several minutes on-time at a high gray level compared to that of the ordinary turned-on image area. We focused on the detailed causes of image sticking, which are directly related with the visible emission such as the changes in the characteristics of phosphor, MgO surface and gas dynamics. The experimental results show that the thermal quenching of phosphor and temperature-dependent discharge characteristics change cause the image sticking problem.

  • This paper deals with the effect of the thickness of R,G and B phosphor on the electrical and optical characteristics in the reflective type AC PDP. By analyzing various parameters, such as addressing voltage, surface discharge voltage, luminance and luminous efficiency, the optimum value of the phosphor thickness is 50 ${\mu}m$ under the condition of 150 ${\mu}m$ barrier rib height.

  • The plasma display panels with newly designed sustain electrode structure have been proposed and its characteristics hate been measured. One has a enlarged discharge path, and the other has a concentration point of electric potential. These structures have a high luminance and luminous efficiency.
