Friction was measured on filter paper sheets impregnated with model compounds representing wood extractives using an apparatus based on the horizontal plane principle. The best lubrication of paper surfaces was achieved when they were completely separated by a densely packed film of saturated long-chain amphophilic molecules, such as fatty acids. The fatty acids adsorbed with their polar ends on the paper surface, causing their hydrocarbon chaine to be orientated perpendicularly to the paper surface. The saturated C18-acid, stearic acid, was an efficient lubricator for paper surfaces. The introduction of a double bond in stearic acid eliminated its lubricating ability. The spatial length of the lubricating fatty acid thereby decreases from 24${\AA}$ to 11${\AA}$. However the transisomer of oleic acid, elidic acid, had the ability to lower friction due to an increased spatial length of the fatty acid. Both the spatial length of the hydrocarbon chain and the number of lubricating chains may be of importance for the paper-to-paper friction caused by wood extractives. A hydrophilic head-graup in the wood extractive and an ordered molecular layer of lubricating molecules seems also to be prerequisites for efficient lubrication. A chemical weak boundary layer between the paper sheets was suggested to cause the low friction when long chain saturated fatty acids were deposited on paper.

For a sailing ship, the frictional resistance exerted on the hull of ship is due to viscous effect of the fluid flow, which is proportional to the wetted area of the hull and moving speed of ship. This resistance can be reduced through air bubble lubrication to the hull. The traditional way of introducing air to the wetted hull consumes extra energy to retain stability of air layer or bubbles. It leads to lower reduction rate of the net frictional resistance. In the present paper, a novel air bubble lubrication technique proposed by Kumagai et al. (2014), the Winged Air Induction Pipe (WAIP) device with opening hole on the upper surface of the hydrofoil is numerically investigated. This device is able to naturally introduce air to be sandwiched between the wetted hull and water. Propulsion system efficiency can be therefore increased by employing the WAIP device to reduce frictional drag. In order to maximize the device performance and explore the underlying physics, parametric study is carried out numerically. Effects of submerged depth of the hydrofoil and properties of the opening holes on the upper surface of the hydrofoil are investigated. The results show that more holes are favourable to reduce frictional drag. 62.85% can be achieved by applying 4 number of holes.

The rotary-vane compressor has become one of the most successful types of compressors because of its mechanical reliability, compactness, and adaptability to moderately high-speed operation in virtually an unlimited range of sizes. However recently, the depletion of the ozone layer due to the current refrigerant(R22) has been getting worse, and it is one of the world's pressing issues. In this paper, we will discuss the use of R410a in the compressor of a room air-conditioner as an alternative refrigerant and air-conditioning system to R22, since R410a has greater refrigerant characteristics than R22. Miniaturization of the rotary compressor for the new refrigerant and air-conditioning system is also possible, which reduces the prime cost of production, hence R410a is naturally a better refrigerant. But to apply the new HFC refrigerant system in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, a significant redesign of the current refrigerant system is also required, because as the refrigeration changes, lubrication characteristics vary. Close attention must be paid to friction force and energy loss due to friction and wear at many sliding areas.

Steam generators (S/G) of pressurized water reactors are large heat exchangers that use the heat from the primary reactor coolant to make steam in the secondary side for driving turbine generators. Reciprocating sliding wear experiments have been performed to examine the wear properties of Incoloy 800 and Inconel 690 steam generator tubes in high temperature water. In present study, the test rig was designed to examine the reciprocating and rolling wear properties in high temperature (room temperature - $300^{\circ}C$) water. The test was performed at constant applied load and sliding distance to investigate the effect of test temperature on wear properties of steam generator tube materials. To investigate the wear mechanism of material, the worn surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. At $290^{\circ}C$, wear rate of Inconel 690 was higher than that of Incoloy 800. It was assumed to be resulted from the oxide layer property difference due to the a\loy composition difference. Between 25 and $150^{\circ}C$ the wear loss increased with increasing temperature. Beyond $150^{\circ}C$, the wear loss decreased with increasing temperature. The wear loss change with temperature were due to the formation of wear protective oxide layer. From the worn surface observation, texture patterns and wear particle layers were found. As test temperature increased, the proportion of particle layer increased.

To investigate the humidity effect on tribological behaviors of Si-DLC/DLC multi-layers, the samples were prepared using a system consisted of an ion-gun for deposition DLC films and a balanced magnetron sputter for introducing silicon atoms to Si-DLC films. The Si-DLC/DLC multi-layers were composed of pure DLC films and Si-incorporated DLC films alternatively and had different bilayer numbers. Hardness and residual stress were drastically decreased through the formation of Si-DLC/DLC multi-layers compared to those of the pure and Si-incorporated DLC films. Wear results obtained under the various humidity conditions (<10%, $40{\sim}50%$, and >85%) showed that the pure DLC film was largely depended on the humidity while the Si-DLC and the Si-DLC/DLC multi-layers were little affected by the environmental humidity. Although friction coefficients of all samples were increased with the relative humidity, the multi-layer films showed relatively lower friction coefficients that those of the single films.
It has been well established that resistant force and wear that occur during rolling motion depend on several factors such as material type, hardness, subsurface microstructure, applied load, and speed. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of microstructure and the state of deformed layer on the rolling contact characteristics in dry and lubricated rolling contacts. The results of this work show that the rolling resistance behavior depends on the state of the deformed layer. Also, lubrication can reduce the plastic flow at the surface but may still have an effect on the subsurface strain. The cross-sectional view of the microstructure shows that surface traction has a difinite effect on the morphology of the surface region. That is, significant slip seems to have taken place between the ball than those of the dry rolling case. The surface generation effects were significantly less compared to the case of dry rolling contact.
In this study, friction and wear properties of flame sprayed specimens and hard Cr plating specimens were tested, and their properties were compared each other in dry and lubrication condition. Ni-Cr powder and steel powder were used as the spray powder and sprayed on the steel(S45C) substrate by flame sprayed method. Each wear surface was observed with SEM after friction and wear test. The friction coefficient of the as-forged steel specimens was the highest among surface treatment specimens, and the other specimens appeared in order as follows ; hard Cr-plating specimens, Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens, steel powder sprayed specimens. Comparing the wear volumes in dry condition, as forged steel specimens appeared the greatest wear volume, and the other specimens appeared wear volume in order as follows ; Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens, steel powder sprayed specimens, hard Cr plating specimens. In friction and wear test, the hard Cr plating specimens were worn by the abrasive phenomenon, involving the cracks. The wear volume of steel powder sprayed specimens was lower than that of Ni-Cr powder sprayed specimens. Comparing the tensile strength of both sprayed coating layers, the steel powder sprayed coating layer was better than Ni-Cr powder sprayed coating layer.
As the technique of high-speed end-milling is widely adopted to machining field. The investigation for microscopic precision of workpiece is necessary for machinability evolution. The environmental pollution has become a big problem in industry and many researcher have investigated in order to preserve the environment. The environmentally conscious machining and technology have more important position in machining process. In the milling process, the cutting fluid has greatly bad influence on the environment. The damaged layer affect mold life and machine parts in machining. In this study, the cutting force, the surface roughness, micro hardness and residual stress is evaluated according to machining environment. Finally, it is obtained that the characteristics of damaged layer in environmentally conscious machining is better than that in conventional machining using cutting fluid.
plasma-sprayed Cr$_2$O$_3$-based coatings containing MoO$_3$ were studied to gain a better understanding of the influence of MoO$_3$ composition in the coatings on their tribological behaviour. A reciprocal type tribo-tester was employed to examine friction and wear behavior of the specimens at high temperature(450。C). The physical characteristics of worn surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and chemical composition of the coating surfaces was analyzed using a X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The results showed that friction coefficient of the MoO$_3$-added coatings were lower than those without MoO$_3$ addition. The larger protecting layers were observed at the worn surface of plasma spray coated specimens with MoO$_3$ addition. XPS analysis of the protecting layer indicated that MoO$_3$ composition was dominantly formed at the surface. MoO$_3$ composition in the protecting layer appears to be more favorable in reducing the friction.
