The Effects of Base Oil Quality on the Performance of GF-3 Engine Oil

  • The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-3 passenger car engine oil specification has been introduced commercially in July 2001. The new specification oil provides superior performance in terms of fuel economy, control of high temperature deposits, and oil consumption. These enhanced performances of GF-3 engine oil need high quality base oil as well as a better additive system. In this paper, the effect of base oil on various performances of ILSAC GF-3 engine oil was investigated. From the GF-3 sequence engine tests, Group III base oil shows better performance in fuel economy retention, oxidation and varnish control than combination of group III and group II or group III and group 1.

Effect of refrigeration lubricants on the heat transfer performance in the microfin tube evaporator (마이크로핀관 증발기내 전열 성능에 미치는 냉동기유의 영향)

  • The present study experimentally investigated the effect of refrigeration lubricant on the heat transfer performance in the straight sections and U-bend of a microfin tube evaporator by using R-22/mineral oil and R-407C/POE oil. The apparatus consisted of test section with U-bend, preheater, condenser, oil injection and sampling devices, magnetic pump, mass flow meter etc. The experimental parameters were oil concentration of 0 to 5 wt%, inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.5, mass flux of 219 and $400kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of 10 and $20kW/m^2$. The effects of parameters on the heat transfer coefficients were large in the order of inlet quality, mass flux and heat flux as oil concentration got increased. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficients were continuously decreased for R-22 and increased by 3% up to the concentration of 1% and then decreased for R-407C under the condition of large inlet quality, and small mass flux and heat flux. But, the heat transfer coefficients were increased up to the concentration of 3% and then decreased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants under the opposite conditions. The variation of enhancement factors for R-407C was under 50% of that for R-22 and the variation with respect to the positions in the test section was small. The pressure drops were increased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants as oil concentration was increased. The pressure drops for R-407C were smaller by the maximum of 18% than those for R-22.

Influence of Base Oils and Extreme Pressure Additives on Lubricity and Anti-Seizure Property of Lubricant in Cold Rolling (기유와 극압제가 압연유의 윤활성 및 내소부성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects on lubricity and the anti-seizure property of lubricant according to base oils and extreme pressure additives of sulfur type and phosphorous type in cold rolling were evaluated by a laboratory scale rolling mill, where the contact conditions between work roll and strip are very close to actual cold rolling mill. The important results were obtained as follows : (1) synthetic oil has better effect on lubricity than tallow, (2) lubricant with extreme pressure additives of sulfur type of phosphorous type has better effect than base oil noly, (3) the more amount of extreme pressure additives is, the better effect on lubricity is, (4) sulfur type has better effect on lubricity than phosphorous type and (6) phosphorous type has better effect on anti-seizure property than sulfur type.

  • Lubricanting characteristics in the warm forging have influence on forgeability of products. but Research on deformation characteristic of warm forging on the lubricant and lubricating method lack. This paper deform a bevel gear by warm forging and evaluate deformation loads and quality of products by each lubricants and lubricating method using oil-based lubricants(Soy, Oildag) and water-based lubricants(Deltaforge $\#31$, Renite S-26-X, Deltaglaze $\#151$). In conclusion, the less a deformation load by lubricants the more improvement a quality of product in manufacture of a bevel gear and water-based lubricants in the warm forging reduce a deformation load and improve a quality of products. Especially, Deltaforge $\31$ have excellent characteristic in the warm forging.

  • Viscosity index is an arbitray number used to characterize the variation of lubricant viscosity with respect to temperature. It is well recognized in the oil industry that as refining severity increases, lubricant VI increases. Consequently, VI is often perceived as a measure of lubricant quality. Futhermore, a 95 VI minimum specification is commonly imposed in marketing base stocks. These factors provide the incentitive for this study to carefully analyze VI definition and two component viscosity blending techniques to investigate how they affect VI change, and finally to examine possible avenues to produce 95+VI base stocks by blending sub-95 VI base stocks.

An Experimental Study on Thermal Characteristics of Journal Bearing (저어널 베어링의 온도 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper deals with some thermal Characteristics of journal bearing such as the behaviour of the maximum bearing temperature, the lubricant's carry-over in the inlet region and so on. Temperatures of the bearing and the lubricants being supplied and discharged were measured along with shaft speed and bearing load. The results showed that with the increase of the Shaft speed, the maximum temperature rose at any shaft speed at a defferent rate of change defending on the flow regime of the lubricant film. And the lower eccentricity ratio is the more lubricant's carry-over occur. Additionally it was partially proved that the oil discharge temperature and the maximum temperature changed in quite different each other.

  • An analysis model for an elliptical fluid film bearing is described. The principles of hydrodynamic lubrication are outlined together with an expanded version of the governing pressure field equation as related to elliptical journal bearing. Finite element method approximations are given for the pressure field equation and a temperature model, both related to the fluid film thickness. The thermal effects in the lubricant viscosity, lubricant film thickness, variation of the journal rotating speed and influence of turbulence are investigated in this paper A finite element model and an iterative computational process are described, whereby full simultaneously converged field solutions for fluid film thickness, temperature, viscosity, pressure, stiffness and damping coefficient are obtained.

  • Refrigerant oil reduces friction between piston and cylinder of compressor and is normally hard to mix or dissolve in refrigerant. Oil separator deprives refrigerating oil from mixed solution of refrigerant and refrigerant oil. Sometimes much machine oil is carried into an evaporator and is applied to surface of the evaporator, and then disturbs heat transfer through it. Well-made oil separator helps refrigerating system stable and evaporator sustain full capacity. In this paper, new oil separate with different way to structure is suggested and tested. As result the new separates is 13% higher at 0C with 10% mixture and 6% higher at 0C with 20% mixture.

An oil-tolerant and salt-resistant aqueous foam system for heavy oil transportation

  • An oil-tolerant and salt-resistant aqueous foam system was screened out as a possible lubricant to enable cold heavy oil transportation. The microstructures and viscoelasticity and effects of heavy oil, salt and temperature on the foam stability were investigated and new rheological and drainage models were established. The results indicate the foam with multilayered shells belongs to a special microcellular foam. The viscoelasticity could be neglected due to its low relaxation time. The drainage process can be divided into three stages. The foam with quality of 67.9% maintains great stability at high oil and salt concentrations and appropriate elevated temperature.

Catalytic Cracking of Waste Lubricant Oil over Solid Acid Catalysts (고체산 촉매를 이용한 폐윤활유의 촉매 분해)

  • The catalytic cracking of waste lubricant oil was carried out on silica-alumina (SA), hydrogen-type mordenite (HM), and dealuminated mordenite (DM) with the silica/alumina ratio of 10.5, 10, and 12.5, respectively. Activity in the catalytic cracking was found to be in the order of SA > DM > HM. Carbon number distribution of the oil obtained over SA was similar to that of gasoline while that of the oil obtained over DM was similar to that of diesel. Carbon number distribution of the oil obtained over HM was similar to that between gasoline and diesel. Acid amounts of three kinds of catalysts were found to be in the order of $SA\;{\approx}\;HM$ > DM. Unlike HM and DM with pores of an uniform diameter below 10 A, SA had a pore size distribution within the range of 10 to 50 A. These results indicate that the acid amount and pore size of the catalysts may be related to the carbon number distribution of the cracked oil. The decrement of surface area by the accumulation of carbon and impurities on the surface of the catalyst was found to be in the order of SA > DM > HM.
