In case of Korean housing complex, there became more mixed arrangement of buildings with different number of layers for a variety of urban skyline, recently. For example, around 33% of the construction sites of 'A' public corporation have gaps of more than 4 layers between high-rise buildings and low-rise ones in the same site, according to the survey. Generally, construction duration of the housing complex is estimated based on the layers of the highest building. Due to this baseline, whole construction duration could be extended so that the project cost could be increased. Therefore, framework duration of higher-rise buildings should be reduced to secure the feasibility of the project. On the other hands, these shortenings could adversely harm the feasibility in some cases because there are a wide range of combinations of the buildings with different number of layers in designing housing complex. Therefore, this study shows the results of analysis on effects of framework time shortening on the cost in housing complex project. Moreover, this could set the baseline of checking possibilities in condensing the construction duration of projects with buildings of different layers by supplying comprehensive database.

Shear wall is commonly used as a lateral force resisting system of concrete mid-rise and high-rise buildings, but it brings challenges in providing relatively large space throughout the building height. For this reason, the structure system where the upper structure with bearing, non-bearing and/or shear walls that sits on top of a transfer plate system supported by widely spaced columns at the lower stories is preferred in some regions, particularly in low to moderate seismic regions in Asia. A thick reinforced concrete (RC) plate has often been used as a transfer system, along with RC transfer girders; however, the RC plate becomes very thick for tall buildings. Applying the post-tensioning (PT) technique to RC plates can effectively reduce the thickness and reinforcement as an economical design method. Currently, a simplified model is used for numerical modeling of PT transfer plate, which does not consider the interaction of the plate and the upper structure. To observe the actual behavior of PT transfer plate under seismic loads, it is necessary to model whole parts of the structure and tendons to precisely include the interaction and the secondary effect of PT tendons in the results. This research evaluated the seismic behavior of shear wall-type residential buildings with PT transfer plates for the condition that PT tendons are included or excluded in the modeling. Three-dimensional finite element models were developed, which includes prestressing tendon elements, and response spectrum analyses were carried out to evaluate seismic forces. Two buildings with flat-shape and L-shape plans were considered, and design forces of shear walls and transfer columns for a system with and without PT tendons were compared. The results showed that, in some cases, excluding PT tendons from the model leads to an unrealistic estimation of the demands for shear walls sit on transfer plate and transfer columns due to excluding the secondary effect of PT tendons. Based on the results, generally, the secondary effect reduces shear force demand and axial-flexural demands of transfer columns but increases the shear force demand of shear walls. The results of this study suggested that, in addition to the effect of PT on the resistance of transfer plate, it is necessary to include PT tendons in the modeling to consider its effect on force demand.
Recently, the remodeling projects of old low-rise buildings were launched in Korea. However, most of them were not satisfied with the value set forth by the KBC2005. Even though there are some research studies on how to improve the seismic performance of such buildings as newly constructed buildings, there is little research in measuring the actual vibrations on low old buildings to prove the effect of retrofit. There also has not been any in-depth research on the dynamic characteristics of full-scale structures using vibration measurements of the building that was damaged to failure. Using an actuator, the dynamic characteristics of reinforced three-storey concrete buildings were evaluated before and after they were damaged. After an 80-mm horizontal displacement by the actuator, frequency in the long and short directions were reduced to 20.85% and 5.77% respectively ; damping ratio was also reduced to 53.9% and 23.15% respectively.

Modular construction technique is an adaptation of factory-based mass production concept in ordinary manufacturing industries to construction industry and it assumes that panels, units, etc. are fabricated in factories and assembled in construction sites. Given its structural limitations, modular construction technique is primarily used in low-story buildings whose maximum height is usually five stories, but researchers are actively studying possible adaptation of modular construction technique to high-rise building designs these days as in the case of infill-type modular construction design. Infill-type modular construction technique, most frequently used in high-rise building construction projects, completes frame construction first in reinforced concrete structures and fills unit modules in such structures. However, infill-type modular construction technique leads to longer construction schedule accompanying increase in construction cost, cost overrun due to additional of temporary work, and possible damage to units in the wake of facility construction. Accordingly, this study is performed as a basic study for the development of bottom-up infill-type modular construction technique intended to construct structural frames and fill in units sequentially in a bid to address such drawbacks of current infill-type modular construction technique.
The "Intelligent Fire detecting and Extinguishing System" is an up-to-date fire protection system for modern high-rise buildings, international airports, enormous industrial facilities, dome stadiums such as specific areas in which the application of our local fire protection regulation could not be satisfied. The state-of-the art initiating devices communicated with sophisticated network control panels enable peoples to get reliable and powerful suppressions using water or gas, providing absolute protection. The Intelligent Water Cannon System, the Low Pressure $CO_2$ System and the MXL Networking Fire Alarm System introduced in this paper accomplish the dynamic protection for the special hazards.
Many practical time series, including pressure signals measured on roof-corners of low-rise buildings in quartering winds, consist of relatively quiescent periods interrupted by intermittent transients. The dyadic wavelet transform is used to detect these transients in pressure time series and a relatively simple pattern classification scheme is used to detect underlying structure in these transients. Statistical analysis of the resulting pattern classes yields a library of signal "building blocks", which are useful for detailed characterization of transients inherent to the signals being analyzed.
This study researched problems of safety inspection method and current legislative system for the structure safety evaluation of Rahmen structure affected by remodeling. The elements of weight increase were examined in terms of differences of load moment, shear force, compressive stress and amount of steel before and after remodeling by structure analysis. The thorough examination for impacts of weight increase is indispensable to change of use or extension.
This paper presents a methodology for spatial extrapolation of wind-induced pressure time series from a corner bay to roof locations on a low building away from the corner through the application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The approach is based on the concept that pressure time series in the far field can be approximated as a linear combination of a series of modes and principal coordinates, where the modes are extracted from the full roof pressure field of an aerodynamically similar building and the principal coordinates are calculated from data at the leading corner bay only. The reliability of the extrapolation for uplift time series in nine bays for a cornering wind direction was examined. It is shown that POD can extrapolate reasonably accurately to bays near the leading corner, given the first three modes, but the extrapolation degrades further from the corner bay as the spatial correlations decrease.
Low rise masonry structures are relatively inexpensive and easier to construct compared to other types of structures such as steel and reinforced concrete buildings. However, masonry structures are relatively heavier and less ductile and more vulnerable to damages in earthquakes. In this research, a new innovative low-cost seismic isolator using steel rings (SISR) is employed to reduce the seismic vulnerability of masonry structures. FEA of a masonry structure, made of concrete blocks is used to evaluate the effect of the proposed SISR on the seismic response of the structure. Two systems, fixed base and isolated from the base with the proposed SISRs, are considered. Micro-element approach and ABAQUS software are used for structural modeling. The nonlinear structural parameters of the SISRs, extracted from a recent experimental study by the authors, are used in numerical modeling. The masonry structure is studied in two separate modes, fixed base and isolated base with the proposed SISRs, under Erzincan and Imperial Valley-06 earthquakes. The accelerated response at the roof level, as well as the deformation in the masonry walls, are the parameters to assess the effect of the proposed SISRs. The results show a highly improved performance of the masonry structure with the SISRs.

The need for eco-friendly building materials such as engineered wood has increased to reduce carbon emissions. Although the range and height of engineered wood buildings are gradually increasing in North America and Europe, engineered wood is mainly used for low-rise residential buildings in Korea. In order to reduce carbon emissions more, therefore, it needs to expand the use of engineered wood by applying it to various buildings with different uses or more stories. With this background, the aim of this study is to investigate the applicability of engineered wood for 9-story office buildings. Since a 9-story building with engineered wood only is not allowed in KBC, an example building has RC ordinary shear walls as the lateral force resisting system while engineered wood is only used for gravity load resisting moment frames. Another example building is also used for comparison where both lateral and gravity load resisting systems are designed by RC. The applicability of engineered wood is investigated by comparing the seismic performance and the amount of carbon emission of both buildings. The result shows that the seismic performance of both buildings was not significantly different while the amount of carbon emission of the engineered wood building was much less then the RC building. Based on this result, engineered wood is sufficiently applicable to 9-story office buildings even though it still needs to pay attention to the shear design of reinforce concrete walls.
