  • This study was to investigate the improvement of immune activities of the extracts from Codonopsis lanceolata by stepwise steaming process and high pressure process. The phenol contents was $8.742{\mu}g/mg$ which was higher than that from conventional extraction using 70% ethyl alcohol at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. All of extracts at a concentration of $1.0mg/m{\ell}$ showed relatively low cytotoxicity on human normal kidney cell (HEK293) in range of 16 19%. The immune B and T cell growth was improved by extracts using the steamed and high pressure precess of C. lanceolata up to $180{\times}10^4cells/m{\ell}$ and $96{\times}10^4cells/m{\ell}$, respectively. The extract prepared also greatly increased the secretion of both IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$ from the stepwise steamed and high pressure process. This results can conclude that stepwise steamed and high pressure process effectively released active biomaterials which could important role in enhancing immune activity in the body.

  • In this paper, we discussed about the development of the PBMS(Particle Beam Mass Spectrometer) that can measure the nanoparticles on real-time in low-pressure processes. To calibrate this equipment, a DMA(Differential Mobility Analyzer) was used to generate NaCl particles which are charged to +1. Total aerosols flow rate was 1 lpm and 0.086 lpm of that was introduced into the PBMS through the pressure-reducing critical orifice. Transport efficiency through PBMS was 50$\sim$60 % compared to particle current for DMA and PBMS according to the particle size. Results of mesurements are in good agreement with size distributions obtained by DMA.

  • We studied growth and characterization of $SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$ (SBT) thin films fabricated by low temperature process under vacuum and/or oxygen ambient. A metal organic decomposition (MOD) method based on a spin-on technique and annealing process using a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) method was used to prepare the SBT films. The crystallinity of a ferroelectric phase of SBT thin films is related to the oxygen partial pressure during RTA process. Under an oxygen partial pressure higher than 30 Torr, the crystallization temperature inducing the ferroelectric SBT phase can be lowered to $650^{\circ}C$. Those films annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ in vacuum and oxygen ambient showed good ferroelectric properties, that is, the memory window of 0.5~0.9 V at applied voltage of 3~7 V and the leakage current density of 1.80{\times}10^{-8}$ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at an applied voltage of 5V. In comparison with the SBT thin films prepared at 80$0^{\circ}C$ in $O_2$ ambient by furnace annealing process, the SBT thin films prepared at $650^{\circ}C$ in vacuum and oxygen ambient using the RTA process showed a good crystallization and electrical properties which would be able to apply to the virtul device fabrication precess.

  • Background: Pressure support ventilation(PSV) is a new form of mechanical ventilatory support that assists spontaneous inspiraory effort of an intubated patient with a clinician-selected amount of positive airway pressure. Low level pressure support during inspiration can overcome the resistive component of inspiratory work imposed by an endotracheal tube. However the clinical efficacy of PSV as a weaning method has not been established yet. Object: The aim of study was to evaluate the efficacy of PSV when it is added to intermittent mandatory ventilation(IMV) in facilitating weaning precess compaired to IMV mode alone. Method: When the subject patients became clinically stable with their arterial blood gas analysis in acceptable range, they underwent weaning process either by IMV alone or by IMV plus PSV. The level of pressure support was held constant throught the weaning period. For the patients who required mechanical ventilation for less than 72 hr, 2h weaning trial was performed with IMV rate starting from 6/min. For the patients who required mechanical ventilation more than 72 hr, 7 hr weaning trial was performed with IMV rate starting from 8/min. For the patients who failed three consecutive trials of weaning, retrial of weaning was attempted over 3 days with IMV rate starting from 8/min. Clinical characteristics, APACHE II score and nutritional status were compared. For all patients, heart rate, mean blood pressure and respiratory rate were mornitored for 48 hrs after weaning trial started. Results: The total number of weaning trial was 37 in 23 patients(18 by IMV, 19 by IMV+PSV). Total ventilation time, APACHE II score and nutritional status were not statistically different between the two groups. The weaning success rate were not statistically different(38.3% by IMV, 42.1% by IMV+PSV) and the changes of mean blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate during first 48 hours were not different between the two groups. Conclusion: Low level PSV when added to IMV for weaning trial does not seem to improve the success rate of weaning from mechanical ventilation. PSV at 10cm $H_2O$ did not induce significant physiologic changes during weaning process.
