The benefits of using DLC coatings on steel in dry sliding are well known. The present study has investigated the effects of using the same materials but in a boundary lubricated environment. Tribological tests were performed using a load-scanning device and a lubricant with an extreme-pressure (EP) additive. XPS and grazing incidence XRD are used for chemical analysis. The chemical composition of the resulting tribofilm is correlated to different friction behaviors and contact loads, and indicates that high loads are beneficial for formation of low friction tribofilm.
Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films are considerable research interest because of their widespread applications as protective coatings in areas such as optical windows, magnetic storage disks, car parts, biomedical coatings and as micro-electromechanical devices(MEMs). DLC films were deposited on WC-Co by PECVD using Ar, $C_2H_4$ gas. Tribological tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk type tribometer in dry air. Three kinds of counter-bodies balls were used. The counter-bodies balls are SM45C, SUJ2 and $ZrO_2$(3.17mm in diameter). Wear rate of the samples were calculated after measuring the worn-out volume of the wear track. As results wear test, the higher hardness of counter-bodies, friction coefficient low. As result of XPS estimation, wear debris generated as an oxide lower the friction coefficient.
Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings could be good candidates as solid lubricants for cutting tools in dry machining of aluminum alloy. In this work, DLC thin films were produced as a friction reduction coating for WC-Co insert tip using the plasma immersion ion beam deposition (PIIED) technique. DLC coatings were also coated on $Al_2O_3$ specimens and high temperature wear tested up to $400^{\circ}C$ in dry air to observe the survivability of the DLC coating in simulated severe cutting conditions using a pin-on-disc tribotester with Hertzian contact stress of 1.3GPa. It showed reduced friction coefficients of minimum 0.02 up to $400^{\circ}C$. And cutting performance of DLC coated WC-Co insert tips to Al 6061 alloy were conducted in a high speed machining center. The main problems of built-up edge formation in aluminum machining are drastically reduced with improved surface roughness. The improvements were mainly related to the low friction coefficient of DLC to Al alloy and the anti-adhesion of Al alloy to WE due to the inertness of DLC.

This study investigates the macroscopic wear behaviors of C/C and C/C-SiC composites coated with hafnium carbide (HfC). To improve the wear resistance of C/C composites, low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) was used to obtain HfC coating. The CVD coatings were deposited at various deposition temperatures of 1300, 1400, and $1500^{\circ}C$. The effect of the substrate material (the C/C substrate, the C/C-CVR substrate, or the C/C-SiC substrate deposited by LSI) was also studied to improve the wear resistance. The experiment used the ball-on-disk method, with a tungsten carbide (WC) ball utilized as an indenter to evaluate the wear behavior. The HfC coatings were found to effectively improve the wear resistance of C/C and C/C-SiC composites, compared with the case of a non-coated C/C composite. The former showed lower friction coefficients and almost no wear loss during the wear test because of the presence of hard coatings. The wear scar width was relatively narrower for the C/C and C/C-SiC composites with hafnium coatings. Wear behavior was found to critically depend on the deposition temperature and the material. Thus, the HfC-coated C/C-SiC composites fabricated at deposition temperatures of $1500^{\circ}C$ showed the best wear resistance, a lower friction coefficient, and almost no loss during the wear test.
The effect of nitrogen doping on the mechanical and tribological performance of single-layer tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) coatings of up to $1{\mu}m$ in thickness was investigated using a custom-made filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA). The results obtained revealed that the hardness of the coatings decreased from $65{\pm}4.8GPa$ to $25{\pm}2.4GPa$ with increasing nitrogen gas ratio, which indicates that nitrogen doping occurs through substitution in the $sp^2$ phase. Subsequent AES analysis showed that the N/C ratio in the ta-C:N thick-film coatings ranged from 0.03 to 0.29 and increased with the nitrogen flow rate. Variation in the G-peak positions and I(D)/I(G) ratio exhibit a similar trend. It is concluded from these results that micron-thick ta-C:N films have the potential to be used in a wide range of functional coating applications in electronics. To achieve highly conductive and wear-resistant coatings in system components, the friction and wear performances of the coating were investigated. The tribological behavior of the coating was investigated by sliding an SUJ2 ball over the coating in a ball-on-disk tribo-meter. The experimental results revealed that doping using a high nitrogen gas flow rate improved the wear resistance of the coating, while a low flow rate of 0-10 sccm increased the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear rate through the generation of hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) phases by tribo-chemical reaction. However, the CoF and wear rate dramatically decreased when the nitrogen flow rate was increased to 30-40 sccm, due to the nitrogen inducing phase transformation that produced a graphite-like structure in the coating. The widths of the wear track and wear scar were also observed to decrease with increasing nitrogen flow rate. Moreover, the G-peaks of the wear scar around the SUJ2 ball on the worn surface increased with increasing nitrogen doping.
This paper reviews recent approaches to develop composite polymer-containing coatings by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) using various low-molecular fractions of superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene (SPTFE). The features of the unique approaches to form the composite polymer-containing coating on the surface of MA8 magnesium alloy were summarized. Improvement in the corrosion and tribological behavior of the polymer-containing coating can be attributed to the morphology and insulating properties of the surface layers and solid lubrication effect of the SPTFE particles. Such multifunctional coatings have high corrosion resistance ($R_p=3.0{\times}10^7{\Omega}cm^2$) and low friction coefficient (0.13) under dry wear conditions. The effect of dispersity and ${\xi}$-potential of the nanoscale materials ($ZrO_2$ and $SiO_2$) used as electrolyte components for the plasma electrolytic oxidation on the composition and properties of the coatings was investigated. Improvement in the protective properties of the coatings with the incorporated nanoparticles was explained by the greater thickness of the protective layer, relatively low porosity, and the presence of narrow non-through pores. The impedance modulus measured at low frequency for the zirconia-containing layer (${\mid}Z{\mid}_{f=0.01Hz}=1.8{\times}10^6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$) was more than one order of magnitude higher than that of the PEO-coating formed in the nanoparticles-free electrolyte (${\mid}Z{\mid}_{f=0.01Hz}=5.4{\times}10^4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$).
Amorphous carbon (a-C) has excellent wear resistance and, therefore is used as a coating to protect numerous mechanical components to prolong their lifetimes. Among the a-C coatings, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and DLC-containing silicon (Si-DLC) receive extensive attention owing to their enhanced wear resistance and low frictional characteristics. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of DLC and Si-DLC coatings are analyzed. For comparative analysis, DLC-coated and Si-DLC-coated vanes are utilized with the counterpart of a roller for the friction tests. Since the lubricated mechanical components are generally vulnerable to wear when a lubricant film does not form properly, friction tests are conducted under boundary lubrication conditions to promote wear. A cylinder-on-cylinder type tribometer is used to perform the friction tests with various normal load conditions. After the friction test, a 3D laser confocal microscope is used for quantifying the wear volume to calculate the wear rate of each specimen. Consequently, the DLC-coated specimen shows a lower coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate than the specimen without the coating, while the Si-DLC coating shows a higher COF than the bare specimen. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the efficiency and reliability of compressors.
The wear behaviors of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ deposited on casting aluminum alloy(ASTM A356) by plasma spray against SiC ball have been investigated experimentally. Friction and wear tests are carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ coating(APS). It is found that low friction correspond to low wear and high friction to high wear in the experimental result. The thickness of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coatings indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that a voids and porosities of coating surface result in the crack generated. As the tensile stresses in coating increased with the increased friction coefficient. The columnar grain of coating will be fractured to achieve the critical stress. It is found that the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tensile and compressire under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. This crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.
Ternary Ti-B-C coatings were synthesized on WC-Co and Si wafers substrates by a PECVD technique using a gaseous mixture of $TiCl_4,\;BCl_3,\;CH_4,\;Ar,\;and\; H_2$. The effects of deposition variables such as substrate temperature, gas ratio, $R_x=[BCl_3/(CH_4+BCl_3)]$ on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-B-C coatings were investigated. From our instrumental analyses, the synthesized Ti-B-C coatings was confirmed to be composites consisting of nanocrystallites TiC, quasi-amorphous TiB2, and amorphous carbon at low boron content, on the contrary, nanocrystallites $TiB_2$, quasi-amorphous TiC, and amorphous carbon at relatively high boron content. The microhardness of the Ti-B-C coatings increased from $\~23 GPa$ of TiC to $\~38 GPa$ of $Ti_{0.33}B_{0.55}C_{0.11}$ coatings with increasing the boron content. The $Ti_{0.33}B_{0.55}C_{0.11}$ coatings showed lower average friction coefficient of 0.45, in addition, it showed relatively better wear behavior compared to other binary coatings of $TiB_2$ and TiC. The microstruture and microhardness value of Ti-B-C coatings were largely depend on the deposition temperature.
PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at a wide range of temperatures and demonstrates a low friction coefficient value. PTFE is being used for self-lubricating parts in industry. But it shows a high wear rate. Thus, PTFE and nano-diamond powder were mixed into a composite and the wear properties of a PTFE coating layer on Al6061 was investigated. A ball-on-disk type of wear tester was used under a dry condition and different temperatures of oil. After the wear test, the wear track wasexamined by optical microscope. The PTFE-diamond showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.02) of all the lubricants in the experiments. The friction coefficient was shown to be directly related to the diamond powder in the PTFE coating. Adhesion estimations were performed by a scratch test, which is mainly used for coatings. The critical load between the coating and substrate was defined through analyses of the friction load, normal load curve, and acoustic emissions, along with optical microscope observations. The scratch test results showed that an import item (SWISS) gave the highest critical load values.
