  • The use of low friction wear resistant coatings for machine components is rapidly increasing. These components may operate in any lubrication regime, and less frequently even unlubricated. When run unlubricated it is easy to see the beneficial effect of a low friction coating. However, it has frequently been shown that the coating may also be very beneficial under boundary and mixed lubrication conditions. The present digest briefly presents a few interesting aspects of the use of low friction coatings in lubricated contact illustrated by selected experimental results.

  • In order to reduce resistance torque and energy loss, minimizing friction between race surface and rolling elements of a bearing is necessary. Recently, to reduce friction in bearing element, solid lubricant coating for the bearing raceway surface has been receiving much attention. Considering the operating conditions of real bearings, verifying the effect of solid lubricant coatings under extreme conditions of high load that is more than 1 GPa is necessary. In this study, we evaluated the friction and wear characteristics of SUJ2 bearing steels deposited by carbon-based coatings (Si-DLC, ta-C), $MoS_2$ and graphite. In case of $MoS_2$ and graphite coatings, different surface treatments were applied to the coatings to verify the effect of surface treatment. A pin-on-disc type tribotester was used to evaluate the tribological characteristics of the coatings. It was possible to quantitatively estimate the friction and wear characteristics of solid lubricant under dry and lubrication conditions. The carbon-based coatings improved the friction and wear properties of SUJ2 bearing steels under the high load condition, but $MoS_2$ and graphite coatings were not suitable for high load conditions due to its low hardness. Different friction and wear behaviors were found for different substrate surface treatment method. Also, it was confirmed that solid lubricant coatings had a more positive effect than just applying the lubricant for improving the tribological characteristics.

  • Although DLC coatings have good tribological properties, these are dependant on the deposition method, the property of contact surface, and test condition. Humidity, which has little influence on tribological behavior in macro scale, is an important factor of tribological behavior in small devices like MEMS. The objective of this study is to investigate the tribological behavior of DLC coatings with particular attention to their wettability at various humidities. DLC coatings were deposited on Si substrates and tested using a reciprocating friction tester against Si$_3$N$_4$balls at various humidities. The results showed that the tribological behavior of DLC coatings was dependant on relative humidity and wettablility of DLC coatings. Friction coefficient at high relative humidity was higher thar that at low relative humidity. The tungsten-containing DLC coatings had a good wear resistance at low relative humidity whereas DLC coatings derived from argon(Ar)+cesium(Cs) gases showed a good wear resistance at high relative humidity.

  • Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using friction and wear measurement of piston rings and cylinder blocks in low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocating specimens, and the piston rings with several coatings were used as fixed pin. Several coatings were used such as DLC, TiN, Cr-ceramic and TiAlN in order to improve the tribological characteristics. From the tests wear volume of piston ring surfaces applied various coatings were compared. During the tests coefficients of friction were monitored. Test results showed that DLC coatings showed good tribological properties. TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings showed good wear resistance properties but produced high friction.

  • In this work the tribological characteristics were compared between ZnO coatings on glass substrate prepared by sputtering and sol-gel methods. In order to assess the effects of processing method on the tribological characteristics, the friction and wear properties of the coatings were measured by using a reciprocating type of micro-tribotester. The sputtered ZnO coatings were prepared on a glass substrate at room temperature, $150^{\circ}$, and $300^{\circ}$. The ZnO coatings prepared by sol-gel method were heat-treated in air atmosphere at $550^{\circ}$ for one hour. The crystal structure and surface morphology of the coatings were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), respectively. The experimental results showed that overall the sputtered coatings exhibited better friction and wear properties than coatings prepared by sol-gel method. The sputtered coating grown at room temperature had a relatively low friction coefficient of 0.14 and superior wear resistance compared with the other coatings. Nevertheless, sol-gel method of coating ZnO on glass is beneficial for economical coating of a large surface area.

  • This paper is aimed to understand the effect of different galvannealing temperatures on the frictional properties and Fe-Zn intermetallic phases of the galvannealed (GA) coatings on steel sheets. Their galvannealing treatments were conducted at 465, 505, 515 and $540^{\circ}C$ for about 10s in the additional heating furnace of an industrial continuous hot-dip galvanizing line. The mechanical and the frictional properties of the coatings were estimated using nanoindentation, nanoscratch, micro vickers hardness tests and flat friction tests, which were performed at contact pressures of 4, 20 and 80MPa. Also, the correlation between the microstructure and the frictional properties of the GA coatings were investigated by SEM observation for the cross-section of the GA coating after and before flat friction tests. The results showed that the mechanical and the frictional properties of the coatings are strongly dependent on their phase distributions and microstructure. Especially, in low contact pressure of 4MPa the frictional properties of the coatings were dependent on the surface phases and morphology, while in high contact pressure of 80MPa it was influenced by their mechanical properties based on the dominant phase distributions.

  • Carbon-based coatings, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and buckyball ($C_{60}$), receive much interest because of their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties for a wide range of electromechanical component-based applications. Previous experimental results demonstrate that these carbon-based coatings are promising solid lubricants because of their superior tribological properties, and thus help prolong the lifetime of silicon-based applications. In this study, CNT coatings are deposited on a bare silicon (100) substrate by electrodynamic spraying under different deposition conditions. During the coating deposition, the applied voltage, CNT concentration of the solution, distance between the injecting nozzle and the substrate and diameter of the injecting nozzle are optimized to control the thickness and surface roughness of the CNT coatings. The surface morphology and thickness of the coatings are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The friction and wear properties of the coatings are investigated by using a pin-on-reciprocating-type tribotester under various experimental conditions. The friction coefficient of the CNT coating is as low as 0.15 under high normal loads. The overall results reveal that CNT coatings deposited by electrodynamic spraying provide relatively uniform with superior lubrication performance.

  • In order to determine the wear Properties of PECVD ceramic coatings, wear process was evaluated using the coated pin of Falex Tribosystem. Coating materials deposited wear the TiC, TiN and Ti(CN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behavior under the variation of applied load, temperature and sliding distance by the Falex test machine. The experimental results indicate that TiN coating compared with TiC coating on e materials have e excellent friction and wear characteristics. However TiC coating compared i친 TiN coatings have a low friction coefficient with steel and good thermal stability, and Ti(CN) has the excellent anti-wear properly as well as the superiority of extreme pressure property. Compound coating compared wi simple coatings show improved tribological characteristics.

  • Reputed for their low friction coefficient and wear protection effect, diamond-like carbon (DLC) materials are considered amongst the most important lubricant coatings for tribological applications. In this framework, this investigation aims to elucidate the effect of a few operating parameters, such as applied stress and sliding amplitude on the friction lifetime of DLC coatings. Fretting wear tests are conducted using a 12.7 mm radius counterpart of 52100 steel balls slid against a substrate of the same material coated with a 2 ㎛ thickness DLC. Approximately, 5 to 57 N force is applied, generating a maximum Hertzian contact pressure of 430 to 662 MPa, corresponding to the applied force. The coefficient of friction (CoF) generates three regimes, first a running-in period regime, followed by a steady-state evolution regime, and finally a progressive increase of the CoF reaching the steel CoF value, as an indicator of reaching the substrate. To track the wear scenario, interrupted tests are performed with analysis combining scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), 3D profilometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results show two endurance values: one characterizing the coating failure (Nc1), and the other (Nc2) indicating the friction failure which is situated where the CoF reaches a threshold value of μth = 0.3 in the third regime. The Archard energy density factor is used to determine the two endurance values (Nc1, Nc2). Based on this approach, a master curve is established delimitating both the coating and the friction endurances.

  • The friction behaviors of bulk amorphous thermal spray coating (BAC) and second phase-reinforced composite coatings using a high velocity oxy-fuel spraying process were investigated using a ball-on-disk test rig that slides against a ceramic ball in an atmospheric environment. The surface temperatures were measured using an infrared thermometer installed 50 mm from the contact surface. The crystallinities of the coating layers were determined using X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of the coating layers and worn surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that the friction behavior of the monolithic amorphous coating was sensitive to the testing conditions. Under lower than normal loads, a low and stable friction coefficient of about 0.1 was observed, whereas under a higher relative load, a high and unstable friction coefficient of greater than 0.3 was obtained with an instant temperature increase. For the composite coatings, a sudden increase in friction coefficient did not occur, i.e., the transition region did not exist and during the friction test, a gradual increase occurred only after a significant delay. The BAC morphology observations indicate that viscous plastic flow was generated with low loads, but severe surface damage (i.e., tearing) occurred at high loads. For composite coatings, a relatively smooth surface was observed on the worn surface for all applied loads.
