  • An experiment was conducted in order to assess the effect of level of RDP:UDP ratio and level of feeding concentrate on milk yield, milk composition and nutrient utilization in lactating crossbred cattle. Twenty four medium producing (-10 kg/d, 45 to 135 days postpartum) lactating crossbred cows were divided into four groups of six animals each in a 2${\times}$2 factorial completely randomized design. The cows in group 1 were fed concentrate mixture I containing 59:41 RDP:UDP ratio (low UDP) at normal plane (LUDP+NP), in group 2 were fed low UDP ration at 115% of NRC (1989) requirements (LUDP+HP), whereas cows in group 3 were fed concentrate mixture II containing 52:48 RDP:UDP ratio (high UDP) at normal plane (HUDP+NP) and in group 4 were fed high UDP ration at 115% of NRC (1989) requirements (HUDP+HP). Green jowar was fed ad libitum as the sole roughage to all the animals. The experimental feeding trial lasted for 105 days. The total dry matter intake (DMI), DMI/100 kg body weight, DMI/kg $W^{0.75}$, digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, CF, EE and NFE and intakes of TDN and DCP did not differ significantly among the different groups and also due to both UDP level and plane of nutrition and also due to their interaction. The total dry matter intake varied from 145 g in group 1 (LUDP +NP) to 152.57 g/kg $W^{0.75}$ in group 2 (LUDP+HP) diet. However, increase in milk yield with increased UDP level and also with increased plane of nutrition was observed consistently throughout the experimental period. The average milk yield was 7.66, 8.15, 8.64 and 9.35 kg in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively and there was no significant difference in milk yield among different groups of cows. The overall daily average milk yields in cows fed with low and high UDP diets were 7.91 and 8.99 kg, respectively and at normal and higher plane of feeding the milk yields were 8.15 and 8.75 kg/day, respectively. Thus, there was 13.65% increase in milk yield due to high UDP level and 7.36% due to higher plane of feeding. The daily 4% FCM yields were 9.20 kg for low UDP diet and 10.28 kg for high UDP diet, whereas it was 9.11 kg at normal plane of feeding and 10.37 kg at higher plane of feeding. Fat yields for the corresponding treatment groups were 0.37, 0.43, 0.41 and 0.48 kg, respectively. The 4% FCM yield and also fat yield did not differ significantly among different dietary treatments and also due to UDP level and plane of nutrition, however, 4% FCM yield was increased by 11.74% with high UDP level and 13.83% with higher plane of feeding. The values for total solids, fat, lactose, solids-not-fat and gross energy contents in milk differed significantly (p<0.05) among the different groups and were significantly (p<0.05) higher in milk of cows fed LUDP+HP diet followed by HUDP+HP diet. Total solids (14.65 and 13.83%), lactose (5.44 and 4.92%), solids-not-fat (9.44 and 8.83%) and gross energy (887 and 838 kcal/kg) of milk decreased significantly (p<0.05) with increased UDP level while total solids (13.84 and 14.64), fat (4.84 and 5.36%) and gross energy (832 and 894 kcal/kg) increased significantly (p<0.05) with increase in plane of feeding. Gross and net energetic efficiencies and also gross and net efficiencies of nitrogen utilization for milk production were not significantly different among different groups and also were not affected significantly due to either UDP levels or plane of feeding. Results of the present study suggest that, increasing UDP level from 41% to 48% of CP in concentrate mixture and also increasing plane of feeding from normal (100%) to 115% of NRC requirements maintain a consistently higher milk production.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to obtain an objective index that can be quantified and used for establishing an animal welfare certification standard in Korea. For this purpose rumen pH, ruminating time, milk yield, milk quality, and blood components of cows reared in farms feeding high forage level (90%) and farms feeding low forage level (40%) were compared. Methods: Data on rumen pH, rumination time, milk yield, milk fat ratio, milk protein ratio, and blood metabolism were collected from 12 heads from a welfare farm (forage rate 88.5%) and 13 heads from a conventional farm (forage rate 34.5%) for three days in October 2019. Results: The rumination time was longer in cattle on the welfare farm than on the conventional farm (p<0.01), but ruminal pH fluctuation was greater in the cattle on conventional farm than the welfare farm (p<0.01). Conventional farms with a high ratio of concentrated feed were higher in average daily milk yield than welfare farms, but milk fat and milk production efficiency (milk fat and milk protein corrected milk/total digestible nutrients) was higher in cattle on welfare farms. Blood test results showed a normal range for both farm types, but concentrations of total cholesterol and non-esterified fatty acid were significantly higher in cows from conventional farms with a high milk yield (p<0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that cows on the animal welfare farm with a high percentage of grass feed had higher milk production efficiency with healthier rumen pH and blood metabolism parameters compared to those on the conventional farm.

  • In this study, the rheological properties of cement pastes containing blastfurnace slag of different fineness were investigated. The fluidity of cement pastes with low Blaine value blastfurnace slag was increased with decreasing the plastic viscosity and the yield stress of pastes. And the optimum dosage of polycarboxylate type superplasticizer to the cement pastes was confirmed according to the fineness and the replacement ratio of blastfurnace slag. All cement pastes showed the thixotropy behavior. And also it was formed that the segregation range of cement pastes was occurred below $10D/cm^2$ of the yield stress and below 350 cPs of the plastic viscosity by the coaxial cylinder viscometer.

  • A study was performed to investigate the properties of base metal and weldment for two HSLA steels and one HY-100 steel. Tensile, yield strength and elongation of HSLA-A steel were superior to those of HY-100 steel and yield ratios in HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were higher than HY-100 steel owing to the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. The impact energy of HSLA-A steel was greater at all aging temperatures than that of HY-100 steel. HSLA-A and HY-100 steels had low impact transition temperature of about -l$25^{\circ}C$ and high upper shelf energy, The peak hardness of weldment in HSLA-A, HSLA-B and HY-100 steels were Hv 299, Hv 275 and Hv 441, respectively. The hardenability of HY-100 steel was largest due to the higher amount of carbon. The y-groove test showed that HSLA steels had superior resistance to cold cracking. Toughness of weld joint at the F. L. and F. L. +1mm in HSLA-A was almost the same as HY-100, but those at F. L.+3mm and F. L.+5mm was greater in HSLA-A steel.

  • Anionic polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone and ${\varepsilon}$-Caprolactam via $CO_2/KOH catalysis was attempted in order to find reaction condition and physical properties of polymers. In case of polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone, the yield of conversion was increased when the concentration of potassium hydroxide was reached above 8 mole percent. The optimum of CO_2/KOH$ mole ratio was 0.45. It was also found that the polymerization was taking place at moderate temperature which was around $50^{\circ}C$. With regard to polymerization of-caprolactam, the yield of conversion was relatively low at $80^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$and higher yield of conversion was obtained at higher temperature between $150^{\circ}C$ to $180^{\circ}C$ regardless of $CO_2/KOH mole ratio. The inherent viscosity of nylon 4 and nylon 6 which was made via CO_2/KOH$ catalysis was measured. The observed inherent viscosity was between 2.0 to 5.0.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop ideal substrates for the production of good quality tomatoes in bag culture system and also to improve media with low or no environmental pollution by blending and mixing artificial substrate including peatmoss, perlite, vermiculite, granular rockwool, polyphenol resin foam, bark, and smoked rice hull. The highly efficient media proved by experiments were vermiculite, smoked rice hull, polyphenol resin foam, granular rockwool, and perlite, which showed good results in the early growth as well as the marketable yield of tomato in the bag culture. Tomato plants grown in the media mixed with peatmoss, vermiculite and granular rockwool at the ratio of 3 : 1 : 1(by volume) showed the highest marketable yield, and the next at the ratio of 2 : 1 : 1. The perlite-granular rockwool mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 1 : 4, and the peatmoss vermiculite mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 3 : 2, seemed to be promising media for bag culture.

  • A pot experiment on paddy rice was carried out to investigate the effect of temperature after heading with application of phosphate, potash and silica on the yield and nutrient uptake. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The Grain yield was greatly affected by temperature during ripening. The yield at $20^{\circ}C$ and at $15^{\circ}C$ decreased to 62.3% and to 37.2% of that at $25^{\circ}C$ respectively. However, the application of phosphate, potash and silica at transplanting increased the grain yield even at low temperature of $15^{\circ}C$. 2. Percentage of ripened grain and weight of 1,000 grains decreased with decreasing temperature but they were increased by the application of phosphate, potash and silica at the low temperature of $15^{\circ}C$. 3. The grain filling rate was fast in the early stage of ripening at high temperature while it was fast in the later stage at low temperature. Low temperature damage was severe in the early stage of ripening. 4. Accumulation of carbohydrate in the grain was small at low temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ and the application of phosphate, potash and silica was effective to increase carbohydrate content in the grain at low temperature. 5. The content of T-N and $P_2O_5$ in straw grown at low temperature were high whereaas those of $K_2O$ and $SiO_2$ were low which were increased by the application of potash and silica. 6. There was a positive correlation between the grain yield and rate of ripening, 1,000 grain weight, contents of $K_2O$ and $SiO_2$, $K_2O/N$ and $SiO_2/N$ ratio, but a negative correlation between grain yield and contents of T-N and $P_2O_5$ in the straw at harvesting stage. 7. Ripening rate and weight of 1,000 grains showed a significant positive correlation with $K_2O$, $SiO_2$, $K_2O/N$ and $SiO_2/N$ ratio in the straw. Further, there was a negative correlation between ripening rate and the contents of T-N and $P_2O_5$ but a positive correlation between weight of 1,000 grains and these elements.

  • This study was conducted to know the effect of low radiation during grain filling stage of rice on its grain yield, components, physicochemical properties and palatability, compared to the effect of natural light. Ripened grain ratio, 1000 grain weight of brown rice, milled rice yield of Mipum, Hopum, and Sindongjin were reduced as the shading treatments become higher. After harvest, physicochemical properties of rice influencing eating quality were investigated. Protein content of milled rice was increased, but palatability was decreased by shading treatments. Change of milled rice proteins and palatability due to shading treatments were found to be less in Mipum than that in Hopum and Sindongjin. With regard to amylogram properties, shading treatments resulted in a significant decrease in peak trough final breakdown viscosities of rice flour, though it increased pasting temperature and setback viscosity. The degree of the 55% shading effect was more intensive than the 35% shading effect in changes of ripened grain ratio, 1000 grain weight of brown rice, milled rice yield and milled rice protein.

  • Recently, the development of high-strength thicker steel plate above 600MPa is becoming active due to the increase in both height and member size of architectural structure. However, such steel, which is being investigated in Korea nowadays, has possibility of limited practical application because of high design code strength and high-yield ratio. Therefore, this study performed the validation for the structural performance of beam-column with combined axial force and bending moment whether this beam-column might be attributable as an architectural purpose steel. This study was conducted from the result of monotonic loading test of beam-column, based on the material properties of low-yield, 600MPa class steel which was developed during 1988-1993 in Japan. This study might provide the fundamental database for practical research for these steel which are actively being tested in Korea.
