Objective: This study was conducted to enhance our understanding of nitrogen (N) metabolism and mammary amino acid (AA) utilization in lactating cows with divergent phenotypes of residual feed intake (RFI). Methods: Fifty-three multiparous mid-lactation Holstein dairy cows were selected for RFI measurements over a 50-d experimental period. The 26 cows with the most extreme RFI values were classified into the high RFI (n = 13) and low RFI (n = 13) groups, respectively, for analysis of N metabolism and AA utilization. Results: Compared with the high RFI cows, the low RFI animals had lower dry matter intake (p<0.01) with no difference observed in milk yield between the two groups (p>0.10). However, higher ratios of milk yield to dry matter intake (p<0.01) were found in the low RFI cows than in the high RFI cows. The low RFI cows had significant greater ratios of milk protein to metabolizable protein (p = 0.02) and milk protein to crude protein intake than the high RFI cows (p = 0.01). The arterial concentration and mammary uptake of essential AA (p<0.10), branched-chain AA (p<0.10), and total AA (p<0.10) tended to be lower in the low RFI cows. Additionally, the low RFI cows tended to have a lower ratio of AA uptake to milk output for essential AA (p = 0.08), branched-chain AA (p = 0.07) and total AA (p = 0.09) than the high RFI cows. Conclusion: In summary, both utilization of metabolizable protein for milk protein and mammary AA utilization are more efficient in cows with lower RFI than in the high RFI cows. Our results provide new insight into the protein metabolic processes (related to N and AA) involved in feed efficiency.

We have fabricated Cr nanodot Schottky diodes utilizing AAO templates formed on n-Si substrates. Three different sizes of Cr nanodots (about 75.0, 57.6, and 35.8 nm) were obtained by controlling the height of the AAO template. Cr nanodot Schottky diodes showed a rectifying behavior with low SBHs of 0.17~0.20 eV and high ideality factors of 5.6~9.2 compared to those for the bulk diode. Also, Cr nanodot Schottky diodes with smaller diameters yield higher current densities than those with larger diameters. These electrical behaviors can be explained by both Schottky barrier height (SBH) lowering effects and enhanced tunneling current due to the nanoscale size of the Schottky contact. Also, we have fabricated Cr-Si nanorod Schottky diodes with three different lengths (130, 220, and 330 nm) by dry etching of n-Si substrate. Cr-Si nanorod Schottky diodes with longer nanorods yield higher reverse current than those with shorter nanorods due to the enhanced electric field, which is attributed to a high aspect ratio of Si nanorod.

The mechanical and curing properties of short nylon66 fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber have been investigated as functions of interphase conditions and fiber content. The tensile strength exhibits a dilution effect at a low fiber content in each interphase. It is found that the interphase conditions have an important affect on the dilution ratio and critical fiber content. Double coatings of bonding agent 402 and rubber solution become the best interphase model in this study. The yield strength, tensile modulus, tear strength and fracture toughness at rupture, Jr are significantly improved due to fiber concentration.

API steel is used for line-pipe to transport the oil and natural gas. As the recent trends in the development of API steel are towards the use of larger diameter and thicker plate, many researches have been studied to achieve higher strength, higher toughness and lower yield ratio in API steel. However, the strength of API steel after pipe forming is changed depend on the competition of the Bauschinger effect and work hardening. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence on the Bauschinger effect for API steel by addition of V and Cu which are formed the precipitations for higher strength in API steel. The results are that the addition of V considered as a ferrite stabilizer and Cu considered as a austenite stabilizer decreases and increases the Bauschinger effect for API steel respectively.
Purpose: Self-sufficiency in paper production is desired in Nigeria. This study was aimed at evaluating the performance of a locally fabricated batch pulp digester. Methods: The pulp yields of sheaths generated as waste in the production of bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) laminates were determined at different liquor concentrations and treatment time after preliminary experiments to ascertain the conditions under which the sheath started to pulp. Moreover, the optimum pulping conditions and fiber characteristics were determined and estimated, respectively, to ascertain the pulp fiber suitability for paper production. Results: An optimum pulp yield of 65.1% was obtained at 50% NaOH and 25% $Na_2S$ liquor concentration (w/w) when the cooking time was 4 h. The results of fiber characterization of the pulp indicated an average fiber length of 2.19 mm with a low Runkel ratio of 1.63, both of which signify the suitability of the pulp for medium quality paper production. Conclusions: Softwood pulp can be blended with the fibers to improve the strength of the produced paper; further investigation should be carried out to use other non-woody plants for pulp and papermaking.

This study was to evaluate mechanical properties and toughness of the Al5083-O aluminum alloy welding zone according to the mixing shield gas ratio and heat input change. The GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding of the base metal was carried out with four different mixing shield gas ratios(Ar100%+He0%, Ar67%+He33%, Ar50%+He50%, and Ar33%+He67%) and three different heat inputs(low, medium, and high). To investigate the Charpy absorbed energy of the weld zone, the specimens were divided base metal, weld metal, fusion line, and HAZ notched specimen according to the worked notch position. The different gas ratio and heat input had little effect upon the tensile strength. But Ar33%+He67% mixture had the greatest mechanical properties considering that the more He gas ratio concentrations, the higher yield strength and elongation. The maximum load and displacement of the weld metal notche specimen was so much low more than that of the base metal, but fusion line and HAZ notched specimens showed almost same regardless of the mixing shield gas ratio and heat input. The Charpy absorbed energy was lowest in weld metal notched specimen, and increased in the fusion line, and HAZ notche specimen in order. Ar33%+He67% mixture had the greatest toughness considering that the more He gas ratio, the higher absorption energy.
In this study, HFC ORCs (Organic Rankine Cycles) are investigated for a low-temperature geothermal power generation by a simulation method. A steady-state simulation model is developed to analyze and optimize cycle's performance. The model contains a turbine, a pump, an expansion valve and heat exchangers. The turbine and pump are modelled by an isentropic efficiency. Simulations were carried out for the given heat source and sink inlet temperatures, and given flow rate that is based on the typical power plant thermal-capacitance-rate ratio. 3 HFC fluids are considered as a candidate for a working fluid of low-temperature ORCs. In this study, all optimized HFC ORCs are shown to yield almost the same performance in terms of power for a low-temperature heat source of about $100^{\circ}C$.

This pot experiments were conducted to find out the optimal fertilization ratios of ${\Sigma}anion$ : ${\Sigma}cation$, ${\Sigma}A$/${\Sigma}C$, and the optimal application rates of total major nutrients in an orchardgrass/ladino clover mixed sward. The optimum ratios and concentrations in equivalent basis were computed by the Homes systematic variations technique. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The optimum fertilization ratios of ${\Sigma}A$ : ${\Sigma}C$ and the optimum application rates of total nutrients for the high yields by forage species in a mixed sward were obtained (Table 6 in detail); ${\Sigma}A$ : ${\Sigma}C$ = 2 : 1 at 80 and 320 meq/pot, and 3 : 2 at 560 and 800 meq for grass and grass plus legume, and ${\Sigma}A$ : ${\Sigma}C$ = 1 : 2 for legume in general. 2. The optimum application rates of total nutrients for the high yields of grass and grass plus kgum were increased by decreasing the ${\Sigma}A$/ ${\Sigma}C$: ratio, whereas these for legume showed a valible. range without significance. 3. The yields 01 grass and grass plus legume were generally increasing by increasing both the ${\Sigma}A$/ ${\Sigma}C$ ratio and total concentration, but they were significantly higher at the ${\Sigma}A$/ ${\Sigma}C$ = 1.273 than at the 2.125 under the high total ion concentration. The legume yields were proportional to ${\Sigma}C$ ratio and increased by increasing the total ion concentration under the condition of high ${\Sigma}C$ ratio. 4. The efficiencies of ${\Sigma}A$ and ${\Sigma}C$ in relation to the grass and grass plus legume yields were highest with the low ratios of each other and the low rates of total nutrients ${\Sigma}A$ efficiency m the legume yield tended to be similar to that of ${\Sigma}A$ in the grass yield noted above. The ${\Sigma}C$ efficiency in the legume yield, however, was generally proportional to the ${\Sigma}C$ ratio except at the low rate of 80 meqlpot. 5. The yields of grass plus legume, yield components and botanical compositions in a mixed sward were greatly influenced by the ${\Sigma}A$/${\Sigma}C$ ratios, the fertilization rates of total nutrients, and the interaction of ratio and rate noted above. These effects were generally different and opposite accading to grass and legume. In addition, the soil chemical properties and mineral contents of forages were partially influenced by these systematic variations.
Purpose: New low-cost oilseeds are needed to meet an ever-increasing demand for oil for food, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. African oil bean seed is a tropical crop that is underutilized and has high oil yields, but there have been no studies conducted on its mechanical oil expression up to now. The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of moisture content and seed dimensions on mechanical oil expression from the seeds. Methods: Fresh oil bean seeds were procured, de-hulled, and cleaned. Initial seed moisture content, obtained in accordance with the ASAE standard, was 12% dry basis (db). The seeds were further conditioned by dehydration and rehydration prior to oil expression to obtain four other moisture levels of 8, 10, 14, and 16% db. The major diameter of the seeds was measured using digital vernier calipers, and the seeds were classified into size dimensions (< 40, 41-45, 46-50, 51-55, and > 55 mm). The oil yield and expression efficiency were obtained in accordance with standard evaluation methods. Results: The highest oil yield and expression efficiency (47.74% and 78.96%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 8% db and seed dimensions of < 40 mm, while the lowest oil yield and expression efficiency (41.35% and 68.28%, respectively) were obtained for a moisture content of 14% db and seed dimensions between 51-55 mm. A mathematical model was developed to predict oil yield for known moisture content and seed dimensions, with a coefficient of determination $R^2$ of 95% and the confidence level of the predictive model of 84.17%. The probability of prediction F ratio showed that moisture content influence was more significant than seed dimensions. Conclusions: The higher the moisture content and larger the seed dimensions, the lower the oil yield from African oil bean seeds.
The effect of biofertilizer (compound of microbial inoculants or groups of micro-organisms) on growth and yield of rice was investigated. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 7 treatments namely: $RF=N-P_2O_{5-}K_2O$ (11-5.5-4.8 kg $10a^{-1}$); half of the recommended fertilizer rate, $HRF=N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ (5.5-2.75-2.4 kg $10a^{-1}$); HRF+Bio 250=HRF combined with 250 kg biofertilizer $10a^{-1}$; HRF+Bio 500=HRF combined with 500 kg biofertilizer $10a^{-1}$; Bio 250=250 kg biofertilizer $10a^{-1}$; Bio 500=500 kg biofertilizer $10a^{-1}$; and NF = No Fertilizer. Results showed that the recorded values of plant height, tiller number and chlorophyll content at 40 to 60 days after transplanting (DAT) in HRF+Bio 500 were significantly higher than those recorded in the RF treatment. Similar observations between these two treatments were only recorded from 60 DAT onwards. Yield components were also superior in HRF+Bio 500 treatment and comparable to that of RF. The highest grain yield obtained in HRF+Bio 500 treatment (785.8 kg $10a^{-1}$) was statistically similar to that of RF (739.8 kg $10a^{-1}$) but significantly higher than that of NF (506.7 kg $10a^{-1}$). Finally, head grain recovery (90.9) was low while chalkiness (0.03) was high at HRF+Bio 500 treatment as compared with RF, which were (96.1) and (0.3), respectively. Results showed that combined treatment of HRF and 500 kg biofertilizer $10a^{-1}$ has similar effects on the growth and yield of rice with that of RF.
